Incorporation of Biochar Carbon into Stable Soil Aggregates:The Role of Clay Mineralogy and Other Soil Characteristics

Switchgrass Biochar effects on Plant Biomass and Microbial Dynamics in Two Soils from Different Regions

Biochar amendments to soils may alter soil function and fertility in various ways, including through induced changes in the microbial community. We assessed microbial activity and community composition of two distinct clayey soil types, an Aridisol from Colorado （CO） in the U.S. Central Great Plains, and an Alfisol from Virginia （VA） in the southeastern USA following the application of switchgrass （Panicum virgatum） biochar. The switchgrass biochar was applied at four levels, 0%,0, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, approximately equivalent to biochar additions of 0, 25, 50, and 100 t ha^-1, respectively, to the soils grown with wheat （Triticum aestivum） in an eight-week growth chamber experiment. We measured wheat shoot biomass and nitrogen （N） content and soil nutrient availability and N mineralization rates, and characterized the microbial fatty acid methyl ester （FAMe） profiles of the soils. Net N mineralization rates decreased in both soils in proportion to an increase in biochar levels, but the effect was more marked in the VA soil, where net N mineralization decreased from -2.1 to -38.4 mg kg^-1. The 10% biochar addition increased soil pH, electrical conductivity, Mehlich- and bicarbonate-extractable phosphorus （P）, and extractable potassium （K） in both soil types. The wheat shoot biomass decreased from 17.7 to 9.1 g with incremental additions of biochar in the CO soil, but no difference was noted in plants grown in the VA soil. The FAMe recovery assay indicated that the switchgrass biochar addition could introduce artifacts in analysis, so the results needed to be interpreted with caution. Non-corrected total FAMe concentrations indicated a decline by 457o and 34% with 10% biochar addition in the CO and VA soils, respectively, though these differences became nonsignificant when the extraction efficiency correction factor was applied. Gender-based differences in cardiac diseases

It has been observed that the incidence of heart failure and Brugada syndrome are higher in men, while women are more likely to have QT interval prolongation and develop torsades de pointes （TdP）. Over the past decade, new studies have improved our understanding of the mechanisms of abnormal repolarization and the relationship between gender differences in cardiac repolarization and presentation of clinical syndromes. Nevertheless, the causes of gender-based differences in cardiac disease are still not completely clear. This review paper briefly summarized what is currently known about gender differences in heart failure, Brugada syndrome and long QT syndrome from molecular mechanisms to clinical presentations.

DeM Fusion using a modified k-means clustering algorithm

Digital elevation models(DeMs)are a necessary dataset for modelling the earth’s surface;however,all DeMs contain *** can reduce this error using DeM fusion techniques since numerous DeMs can be available for a ***,the use of a clustering algorithm in DeM fusion has not been previously *** this study a new DeM fusion algorithm based on a clustering approach that works on multiple DeMs to exploit consistency in the estimates as indicators of accuracy and precision is *** fusion approach includes slope and elevation thresholding,k-means clustering of the elevation estimates at each cell location,as well as filtering and smoothing of the fusion *** of the input DeMs,and the products of each step of the fusion algorithm,with a higher accuracy reference DeM enabled a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of the DeM fusion *** main findings of the research were:the k-means clustering of the elevations reduced the precision which also impacted the overall accuracy of the estimates;the number of final cluster members and the standard deviation of elevations before clustering both had a strong relationship to the error in the k-means estimates.

Development of a surgical procedure for removal of a placentome from a pregnant ewe during gestation

Background: In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the impact of insults during pregnancy on postnatal health and disease. It is known that changes in placental development can impact fetal growth and subsequent susceptibility to adult onset diseases;however, a method to collect sufficient placental tissues for both histological and gene expression analyses during gestation without compromising the pregnancy has not been described. The ewe is an established biomedical model for the study of fetal development. Due to its cotyledonary placental type, the sheep has potential for surgical removal of materno-fetal exchange tissues, i.e., placentomes. A novel surgical procedure was developed in well-fed control ewes to excise a single placentome at ***: A follow-up study was performed in a cohort of nutrient-restricted ewes to investigate rapid placental changes in response to undernutrition. The surgery averaged 19 min, and there were no viability differences between control and sham ewes. Nutrient restricted fetuses were smaller than controls(4.7 ± 0.1 kg vs. 5.6 ± 0.2 kg;P eater dam weight loss(-32.4 ± 1.3 kg vs. 14.2 ± 2.2 kg;P er placentomes at necropsy(5.7 ± 0.3 g vs. 7.2 ± 0.9 g;P eight of sampled placentomes and placentome numbers did not ***: With this technique, gestational studies in the sheep model will provide insight into the onset and complexity of changes in gene expression in placentomes resulting from undernutrition(as described in our study),overnutrition, alcohol or substance abuse, and environmental or disease factors of relevance and concern regarding the reproductive health and developmental origins of health and disease in humans and in animals.

Selective Deactivation of Gibberellins below the Shoot Apex is Critical to Flowering but Not to Stem elongation of Lolium

Gibberellins （GAs） cause dramatic increases in plant height and a genetic block in the synthesis of GA1 explains the dwarfing of Mendel＇s pea. For flowering, it is GAs which is important in the long-day （LD） responsive grass, Loliurn. As we show here, GA1 and GA4 are restricted in their effectiveness for flowering because they are deactivated by C-2 hydroxylation below the shoot apex. In contrast, GAs is effective because of its structural protection at C-2. excised vegetative shoot tips rapidly degrade [14C]GA1, [14C]GA4, and [14C]GA20 （〉80% in 6 h）, but not [14C]GAs. CoincidentaUy, genes encoding two 2β-oxidases and a putative 16-17-epoxidase were most expressed just below the shoot apex （〈3 mm）. Further down the immature stem （〉4 mm）, expression of these GA deactivation genes is reduced, so allowing GA1 and GA4 to promote sub-apical stem elongation. Subsequently, GA degradation declines in florally induced shoot tips and these GAs can become active for floral development. Structural changes which stabilize GA4 confirm the link between florigenicity and restricted GA 2β-hydroxylation （e.g. 2α-hydroxylation and C-2 di-methylation）. Additionally, a 2-oxidase inhibitor （Trinexapac ethyl） enhanced the activity of applied GA4, as did limiting C-16,17 epoxidation in 16,17-dihydro GAs or after C-13 hydroxylation. Overall, deactivation of GA1 and GA4 just below the shoot apex effectively restricts their florigenicity in Loliurn and, conversely, with GAs, C-2 and C-13 protection against deactivation allows its high florigenicity. Speculatively, such differences in GA access to the shoot apex of grasses may be important for separating floral induction from inflorescence emergence and thus could influence their survival under conditions of herbivore predation.

Body mass index and blood pressure in rural, low socioeconomic children

Background: Young children who are overweight and obese may be at a greater risk of hypertension, and those from rural and low socio-economic areas may also exhibit a prevalence of metabolic dysfunction and cardiovascular risk. This study evaluated the relationship of body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure in children from a rural, low socioeconomic community in Alabama. Methods: This cross-sectional study was comprised of young children (aged 5-9 years). BMI (normal, overweight, obese) was assessed using standardized procedures and classified based on the Centers for Disease Control Growth Charts. Blood pressure status (normal, pre-hypertension, hypertension;stage 1 and stage 2) was defined by percentiles of the 2nd and 3rd reading on a single occasion. A MANOVA was used to determine the relationship of BMI to mean blood pressure (i.e., systolic and diastolic). Results: Of the 134 participants (78% non-Hispanic Black), 10 (7.5%) were overweight and 25 (18.7%) were obese. Pre-hypertension and hypertension were detected in 9 (6.7%) and 20 (14.9%) children, respectively. Results indicate that mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly increased with BMI, P P = 0.028. Conclusion: Hypertension was strongly associated with an unhealthy BMI in these young children from a rural and low-socio-economic community. The findings raise concerns about the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and hypertension in young children and warrant the need to investigate lifestyle behavioral interventions on BMI and blood pressure.
