Quality.vs. quantity.of publications in nanotechnolog. field from the People’s Republic of China

This study.evaluates trends in quality.of nanotechnolog. and nanoscience papers produced by.au- thors from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The metric used to g.ug. quality.is ratio of hig.ly.cited nanotechnolog. papers to total nanotechnolog. papers produced in sequential time frames. The USA is both the most prolific nanotechnolog. publishing.country.and most represented country.on hig.ly.cited nanotechnolog. papers (both in absolute numbers of hig.ly.cited papers and hig.ly.cited papers relative to total publications) over the 1998―2003 time frame, based on the SCI/SSCI databases. Some of the smaller hi-tech countries have relatively.hig. ratios (~2) of hig.ly.cited papers to total publications (e.g. Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland). Countries that have exhibited rapid g.owth in SCI/SSCI nanotechnolog. paper production in recent y.ars (e.g. PRC, South Korea) had ratios an order of mag.itude less than that of the USA for 1998, but by.2003 had increased to about 20% that of the USA (~2.5). PRC and South Korea have climbed in the publications ranking. from 6th and 9th in 1998, re- spectively. to 2nd and 6th in 2005, respectively. PRC’s ratio monotonically.increased from 0.16 to 0.45 over the 1998―2003 period, and South Korea’s ratio increased from 0.11 to about 0.6 over that same period, indicating.their papers are g.tting.more and more citations proportionately. Thus, under rapid g.owth conditions, PRC and South Korea have been able to increase their share of participation in hig.ly.cited papers. As of 2003, PRC and South Korea have ratios comparable to nations like Japan, France, Italy. and Australia but not y.t approaching.those of the hig.ly.cited countries. None of the top ten publications producing.institutions are from the USA, while all of the top ten hig.ly.cited publica- tions producers are from the USA. Let P（g.A） be the chromatic poly.omial of a g.aph g. A g.aph g.is chromatically.unique if for any.g.aph H, P（H, λ） = P（g. λ） implies H is isomorphic to g. Liu et al. [Liu, R. y., Zhao, H. X., y., C. F.： A complete solution to a conjecture on chromatic uniqueness of complete tripartite g.aphs. Discrete Math., 289, 175 179 （2004）], and lau and Peng.[lau, g. C., Peng. y. H.： Chromatic uniqueness of certain complete t-partite g.aphs. Ars Comb., 92, 353-376 （2009）] show that K（p - k,p - i,p） for i = 0, 1 are chromatically.unique if p ≥ k ＋ 2 ≥ 4. In this paper, we show that if 2 〈 i 〈 4, the complete tripartite g.aph K（p - k,p - i,p） is chromatically.unique for integ.rs k ≥ i and p 〉 k2/4 ＋ i ＋ 1.

Accurate ab initio Predictions of Ionization Energ.es and Heats of Formation for Cy.lopropeny.idene, Proparg.lene and Propadieny.idene

The ionization energ.es （IEs） of cy.lopropeny.idene （c-C3H2）, proparg.lene （HCCCH） and propadieny.idene （H2CCC） have been computed using.the CCSD（T）/CBS method, which involves the approxixnation to the complete basis set （CBS） limit at the coupled cluster level with sing.e and double excitations plus quasi-perturbative triple excitation effect （CCSD（T））. The zero-point vibrational energ. correction, the core-valence electronic correction, the scalar relativistic effect and the hig. level correction bey.nd the CCSD（T） excitations have also been made in these calculations. The CCSD（T）/CBS values for the IN（c-C3H2） and IE（HCCCH） of 9.164, 8.987 eV are in g.od ag.eement with the experimental values of （9.15±0.03） and （8.96±0.04） eV. The CCSD（T）/CBS calculations y.eld the IE values of 10.477 and 10.388 eV for the ionization transitions H2CCC→H2CCC^＋（^2A1, C2v） and H2CCC→H2CCC＋（^2A＇, Cs）, respectively. On the basis of the Franek-Condon factor consideration, the IE of （10.43±0.02） eV determined in the previous sing.e-photon ionization experiment most likely.corresponds to the ionization threshold for the H2CCC→H2CCC^＋（^2A1, C2v） transition. Althoug. the precision of the experimental IN measurements fpr c-C3H2, HCCCH, and H2CCC is insufficient to pin down the accuracy.of the theoretical calculations to better than ±30 meV, the excellent ag.eement between the experimental and theoretical IE values observed in the present study.indicates that the CCSD（T）/CBS calculations tog.ther with hig.-order correlation corrections are capable of y.elding.reliable IE predictions for simple hy.rocarbon carbenes and bi-radicals. We have also reported the heats of formation at 0 K （△H^of0） and 298 K （△H^of298）for c-C3H2/c-C3H2^＋, HCCCH/HCCCH^＋, and H2CCC/H2CCC^＋, The available experimental △H^of0 and △H^of298 values for c-C3H2/c C3H2^＋, HCCCH/HCCCH^＋ are found to be in g.od accord with the CCSD（T）/CBS predictions after taking.into account the experimental uncertainties.

Evolving.treatment landscape for early.and advanced pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is an infrequent cancer with a hig. disease related mortality.rate, even in the context of early.stag. disease. Until recently. the rate of death from pancreatic cancer has remained larg.ly.similar whereby.g.mcitabine monotherapy.was the mainstay.of sy.temic treatment for most stag.s of disease. With the discovery.of active multiag.nt chemotherapy.reg.mens, namely.FOLFIRINOX and g.mcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel, the treatment landscape of pancreatic cancer is slowly.evolving. FOLFIRINOX and g.mcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel are now considered standard first line treatment options in metastatic pancreatic cancer. Studies are ong.ing.to investig.te the utility.of these same reg.mens in the adjuvant setting. The potential of these treatments to downstag. disease is also being.actively.examined in the locally.advanced context since neoadjuvant approaches may.improve resection rates and surg.cal outcomes. As more emerg.ng.data become available, the manag.ment of pancreatic cancer is anticipated to chang. sig.ificantly.in the coming.y.ars.

State-to-state Photoionization Dy.amics of Vanadium Nitride by.Two-color Laser Photoionization and Photoelectron Methods

We have conducted a two-color visible-ultraviolet （VIS-UV） resonance-enhanced laser pho- toionization and pulsed field ionization-photoelectron （PFI-PE） study.of g.seous vana- dium mononitride （VN） in the total energ. rang. of 56900-59020 cm-1. The VN molecules were selectively.excited to sing.e rotational levels of the intermediate VN（D3H0, v＇=0） state by.using.a VIS dy. laser prior to photoionization by.employ.ng.a UV laser. This two-color scheme allows the measurements of rovibronically.selected and re- solved PFI-PE spectra for the VN＋（X2A; v＋=0, 1, and 2） ion vibrational bands. By.simulating.the rotationally.resolved PFI-PE spectra, J＋=3/2 is determined to be the lowest rotational level of the g.ound electronic state, indicating.that the sy.metry.of the g.ound VN＋ electronic state is 2A3/2. The analy.is of the PFI-PE spectra for VN＋ also y.elds accurate values for the adiabatic ionization energ. for the formation of VN＋（X2A3/2）, IE（VN）=56909.5＋0.8 cm-1 （7.05588±0.00010 eV）, the vibrational fre- quency.wc＋=1068.0±0.8 cm-1, the anharmonicity.constant wc＋Xe＋=5.8±0.8 cm-1, the rotational constants Be＋=0.6563±0.0005 cm-1 and ae＋=0.0069±0.0004 cm-1, and the equi-librium bond leng.h, re＋=1.529A, for VN＋（X2A3/2）; along.with the rotational constants Bc＋=0.6578i0.0028 cm-1 and a＋=0.0085±0.0028 cm-1, and the equilibrium bond leng.h re＋=1.527A for VN＋（X2As/2）, and the spin-orbit coupling.constant A=153.3±0.8 cm-1 for VN＋（X2/k5/2,3/2）. The hig.ly.precise energ.tic and spectroscopic data obtained in the present study.are valuable for benchmarking.the predictions based on state-of-the-art ab initio quantum calculations.

Leptotrichia hong.ong.nsis ***.,a novel Leptotrichia species with the oral cavity.as its natural reservoir

A straig.t, non-sporulating. g.am-variable bacillus (HKU24T) was recovered from the blood culture of a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma. After repeated subculturing.in BACTEC Plus Anaerobic/F blood culture broth, HKU24T g.ew on brucella ag.r as non-hemoly.ic, pinpoint colonies after 96 h of incubation at 37 °C in an anaerobic environment and aerobic environment with 5% CO2. g.owth was enhanced with a streak of Staphy.ococcus aureus. HKU24T was non-motile and catalase-neg.tive, but positive for alkaline phosphatase, β-g.ucosidase, and α-g.ucosidase. It hy.roly.ed pheny.phosphonate and reduced resazurin. 16S rRNA, g.oEL, g.rB, recA, and rpoB sequencing.showed that HKU24T occupies a distinct phy.og.netic position among.the Leptotrichia species, being.most closely.related to Leptotrichia trevisanii. Using.HKU24T g.oEL, g.rB, recA, and rpoB g.ne-specific primers, frag.ents of these g.nes were amplified from one of 20 oral specimens. Based on phenoty.ic and g.noty.ic characteristics, we propose a new species, Leptotrichia hong.ong.nsis sp. nov., to describe this bacterium.

Methods of vascular control technique during.liver resection:a comprehensive review

BACKg.OUND: Sig.ificant hemorrhag. tog.ther with blood transfusion increases postoperative morbidity.and mortality.of hepatic resection. Hepatic vascular occlusion is effective in minimizing.bleeding.during.hepatic parenchy.al transection. This article aimed to review the current role and status of various techniques of hepatic vascular occlusion during.hepatic resection. DATA SOURCES: The relevant manuscripts were identified by.searching.MEDLINE, and PubMed for articles published between January.1980 and April 2010 using.the key.ords 'vascular control', 'vascular clamping., 'vascular exclusion' and 'hepatectomy.. Additional papers were identified by.a manual search of the references from the key.articles. RESULTS: One randomized controlled trial (RCT) and 5 RCTs showed intermittent Pring.e maneuver and ischemic preconditioning.followed by.continuous Pring.e maneuver were superior to continuous Pring.e maneuver alone, respectively. Two RCTs compared the outcomes of hepatectomy.with and without intermittent Pring.e maneuver. One showed Pring.e maneuver to be beneficial, while the other failed to show any.benefit. One RCT showed that ischemic preconditioning.had sig.ificantly.less blood loss than using.intermittent Pring.e maneuver. Four RCTs evaluated the use of hemihepatic vascular occlusion. One RCT showed it had sig.ificantly.less blood loss than Pring.e maneuver, while the other 3 showed no sig.ificant difference. Only.1 RCT showed it had sig.ificantly.less liver ischemic injury. No RCT had been carried out to assess seg.ental vascular occlusion. Two RCTs compared the outcomes of total hepatic vascular exclusion (THVE) and Pring.e maneuver. One RCT showed THVE resulted in similar blood loss, but a hig.er postoperative complication. The other RCT showed less blood loss using.THVE but the postoperative complication rate was similar. The current role of neoadjuvant/adjuvant/chemoprevention therapy.in partial hepatectomy.for hepatocellular carcinoma:a sy.tematic review

BACKg.OUND: Following.curative treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 50%-90% of postoperative death is due to recurrent disease. Intra-hepatic recurrence is frequently.the only.site of recurrence. Thus, any.neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy. which can decrease or delay.the incidence of intra-hepatic recurrence, or any.cancer chemoprevention which can prevent a new HCC from developing.in the liver remnant, will improve the results of liver resection. This article sy.tematically.reviewed the current evidence of neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and chemoprevention in partial hepatectomy.of HCC. DATA SOURCES: Studies were identified by.searching.MEDLINE and PubMed databases for articles from January.1990 to November 2008 using.the key.ords 'hepatocellular carcinoma', 'hepatectomy., 'adjuvant therapy., 'neoadjuvant therapy., and 'reg.onal therapy.. Additional papers and book chapters were identified by.a manual search of the references from the key.articles. RESULTS: Neoadjuvant transarterial chemoembolization or adjuvant reg.onal transarterial chemotherapy.embolization+sy.temic chemotherapy.did not add benefit. Both adjuvant transarterial radioembolization with (131)I-lipiodol and adjuvant sy.temic interferon showed promising.results. However, there were only.a limited number of such studies. CONCLUSIONS: Further randomized controlled studies need to be carried out. Currently. there is no consensus on a standard neoadjuvant/adjuvant/chemoprevention therapy.in partial hepatectomy.for HCC.

A ruptured recurrent small bowel g.strointestinal stromal tumour causing.hemoperitoneum

Hemoperitoneum is a rare and potentially.life-threatening.complication of g.ST. We reported a 54- y.ar-old man who developed disseminated intra-abdominal recurrence from a previously.resected g.strointestinal stromal tumour （g.ST） of the small bowel, and the patient presented with hemoperitoneum. Emerg.nt debulking.surg.ry.was performed. A hig. dose imatinib was prescribed. Despite the presence of residual disease, the patient was well clinically.8 months after the operation. Even thoug., there is no evidence to support the routine use of debulking.surg.ry.in the manag.ment of g.ST. In our patient, disease prog.ession after second line targ.ted therapy.and the absence of alternative treatment options for spontaneous rupture and hemoperitoneum prompted us to treat the patient ag.ressively. Resection of the ruptured g.ST was carried out for control of bleeding.and to prevent recurrent bleeding.in this patient with g.od surg.cal risks. During.the treatment decision-making. the patient＇s g.neral condition, the risk of surg.ry.and the extent of dissemination were taken into consideration. In this patient who presented with spontaneous rupture of a small intestinal g.ST, the novel use of targ.ted therapy.and ag.ressive surg.cal treatment produced reasonably.g.od survival outcome.
