Long-term consumption of virgin coconut (Cocos nucifera) oil diet impairs learning and memory in CD1 mice

objective:Virgin coconut oil(VCo)has been used in the management of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Therefore,this research investigated the effect of long-term consumption of VCo diet on learning and memory in CD1 ***:Thirty male CD1 mice(divided into three groups,n=10)were fed with standard rodent chow(control),5%and 20%VCo diets(respectively)for 28 *** Morris Water Maze(MWM)test was used to test the effect of VCo on visuo-spatial learning and memory,while the Novel object Recognition Test(NoRT)was used to measure short-and long-term recognition ***:Learning performance of mice did not differ in the *** the probe trial,duration in the retention quadrant and annulus crossings were lower(Po diet groups compared to the control diet group,showing that VCo impaired visuo-spatial *** the NoRT,mice showed more total approaches in the 20%VCo diet group(Pompared to control and the 5%VCo diet groups during the short-term memory *** the long-term memory retention test,the total approaches were also higher in the 20%VCo group compared to control and 5%VCo group(P>0.05).The discrimination index was also lower in the 20%VCo group compared to control and 5%VCo diet groups indicating impaired long-term cognitive memory in mice given 20%VCo *** examination of brains showed damage within the CA1 pyramidal cell layer of the hippocampus in the 20%VCo diet group,in line with the behavioural ***:Long-term consumption of virgin coconut oil diet impairs memory in mice.

Dynamic stress concentration in an infinitely long cylindrical cavity due to a point spherical source embedded within a fluid-saturated poroelastic formation of infinite extent

The effects of a harmonically exciting monopole source on an infinitely long cylindrical cavity embedded entirely within a fluid-saturated poroelastic formation of infinite extent are examined theoretically. It is assumed that the source is located outside the cavity at a specified distance from the borehole axis. The magnitudes of the hoop and radial stresses beside the pore pressures exerted on the interface and inside the porous medium surrounding the borehole are calculated and discussed. Biot's poroelastic modeling along with three types of boundary conditions for the cylindrical interface including the ideal fluid, empty borehole, and rigid inclusion with a hard boundary is employed for the analysis. Utilizing a proper translational addition theorem for expressing the incident spherical wave in terms of cylindrical wave expansions, the proposed boundary conditions at the interface are satisfied. Stresses are formulated by means of wave potential functions in a three-dimensional(3D) manner. The effects of the frequency and the radial distance between the source and borehole on the induced stresses are examined for the first cylindrical modes over frequency spectra. Two permeability conditions for the interface and three types of soils for the porous formation are considered throughout the analysis. To give an overall outline of the study, a numerical example is presented. The results clearly indicate that the distance is a key parameter and has considerable effects on the induced stress values. In addition, the interface permeability condition and soil characteristics play an important role in determining the dynamic response of the borehole. Finally,the obtained results are compared with the relevant analyses existing in the literature for some limit cases, and good agreement is achieved.

Spatial Pattern of Land Cover Change Using Remotely Sensed Imagery and GIS: A Case Study of omo-Shasha-oluwa Forest Reserve, SW Nigeria (1986-2002)

Spatial patterns of land cover changes in the omo-Shasha-oluwa Forest Reserves were conducted on Landsat TM and ETM+ imageries of 1986 and 2002 using remote sensing and GIS techniques. Extent of tree plantation (Gmelina arborea) grew from about 145 sq. km in 1986 to about 322 sq. km in 2002 (122% increase). The natural forest declined from about 2569 sq. km in 1986 to about 2253 sq. km by 2002, while the non-forest areas increased by some 5% from 341 km2?in 1986 to about 490 km2?by 2002. Land cover pattern and its changes in the study area are linked to both natural and anthropogenic processes such as illegal logging, demand for soft wood for industries and expansion of settlements. The conversion of natural forest into monoculture plantations should be discouraged because they do not give room for biodiversity. Specific forestry and environmental laws and regulations that significantly address landscape changes in reserved and protected areas should be enforced to reduce activities that negatively affect the forest reserves. There is also the need to develop a wider and more integrated GIS system of the forest and other land resources in the country to assist different kinds of planning and management activities.

Background:Neovascular age-related macular degeneration(AMD)and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV)are sight-threatening maculopathies with both environmental and genetic risk *** have previously shown relative risks posed by genes of the complement pathways to neovascular AMD and ***:In this study,we investigated the haplotype-tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)in the complement component 5(C5)gene in 708 unrelated Chinese individuals:200 neovascular AMD patients,233 PCV patients and 275 *** tagging SNPs in C5 were *** single SNP association analysis,haplotype-based association analysis and gene-gene interaction analysis between C5 and other AMD-associated genes were ***:The results revealed none of the six tagging SNPs of the C5 gene had a significant association with neovascular AMD or PCV(P>0.05).We also found insignificant haplotype-based association,and no significant SNPSNP interaction between C5 and other genes(including C2-CFB-RDBP-SKIV2L,SERPING1,CETP,ABCG1,PGF,ANGPT2,CFH and HTRA1)for neovascular AMD and ***:This study showed no statistical significance in the genetic association of C5 with neovascular AMD or PCV in a Hong Kong Chinese *** studies in large samples from different populations are warranted to elucidate the role of C5 in the genetic susceptibility of AMD and PCV.
