GPS tracking of non-breeding ravens reveals the importance of anthropogenic food sources during their dispersal in the Eastern Alps

In many songbirds, the space use of breeders is well studied but poorly understood for non-breeders. In common ravens, some studies of non-breeders indicate high vagrancy with large individual differences in home range size, whereas others show that up to 40% of marked non-breeders can be regularly observed at the same anthropogenic food source over months to years. The aim of this study was to provide new insights on ravens＇ behavior during dispersal in the Eastern Alps. We deployed Global Positioning System （GPS） loggers on 10 individuals to gather accurate spatial and temporal information on their movements to quantify： 1） the dimension of the birds＇ space use （home range size with seasonal effects and daily/long-term travel distances）, 2） how long they stayed in a dispersal stage of wandering as opposed to settling temporarily, and 3） their destination of movements. We recorded movements of up to 40km per hour, more than 160km within 1 day and more than 11,000 km within 20 months, indicating high vagrancy. Switching frequently between temporarily settling and travelling large distances in short time intervals leads to extensive home ranges, which also explains and com- bines the different findings in the literature. The destinations are rich anthropogenic food sources, where the birds spent on average 75% of their time. We discuss how ravens may find these ＂feeding hot spots＂ and which factors may influence their decision to stay/leave a site. The strong dependence on anthropogenic resources found in this population may have implications for site management and conservation issues.

State-of-the-Art Research on Technology Innovation Management in China

The two latest Five-Year Plans of China call for an increasing focus of the whole country on technology-based innovation. Moreover, China＇s ambition to become an innovation-oriented nation has attracted widespread international interest and academic studies in technology and innovation management. However by now, there is still not a rigorous amount of the research in this field as regards to China. This paper reports a comprehensive review of the research published between 2002 and 2011 in twelve top technology and innovation management international journals. Overall, a sample of 241 relevant articles in 780 issues is used as the basis for the study. The result is a map of the main research topics, their influence, and the availability of tested empirical data, which traces a state-of-the-art research on technology innovation management in China. Discussion on the map draws avenues for further research and insights for both researchers and policy makers on why, where and how to advance knowledge in the field, with a particular focus on implications for developing cooperation at the enterprise level.

Marine propellers performance and flow-field prediction by a free-wake panel method

A boundary Element Method （bEM） hydrodynamics combined with a flow-alignment technique to evaluate blades shed vorticity is presented and applied to a marine propeller in open water. Potentialities and drawbacks of this approach in capturing propeller performance, slipstream velocities, blade pressure distribution and pressure disturbance in the flow-field are highlighted by comparisons with available experiments and RANSE results. In particular, correlations between the shape of the convected vortex- sheet and the accuracy of bEM results are discussed throughout the paper. To this aim, the analysis of propeller thrust and torque is the starting point towards a detailed discussion on the capability of a 3-D free-wake bEM hydrodynamic approach to describe the local features of the flow-field behind the propeller disk, in view of applications to propulsive configurations where the shed wake plays a dominant role.

Feeding of yeast(Candida spp.) improves in vitro ruminal fermentation of fibrous substrates

In vitro gas production technique（IVGPT） was used with the objective of determining the inclusion effect of live cells of two strains of Candida yeast on in vitro ruminal fermentation of two fibrous substrates. In order to achieve this, two experiments were performed： A） using oat straw（Avena sativa） as substrate; b） using alfalfa hay（Medicabo sativa） as substrate, comparing the effect of two different strains of Candida genre, both isolated from the rumen, on the mentioned substrates. Levica 25（Candida tropicalis） yeast belongs to the culture collection of the Institute of Animal Science, Cuba, and Levazoot 15（Candida norvegensis） yeast is part of the collection of the Faculty of Zootechnology and Ecology of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, Mexico. both strains demonstrated their potential in activating the ruminal fermentation. They stimulated（P〈0.0001） the ruminal fermentation of the substrates under study. However, the Levazoot strain stimulated the dry matter（DM） fermentation of alfalfa in 21.43%, more than Levica 25. It is concluded that there is an influence of yeast strain and diet on the rumen environment and, therefore, it is important to select the appropriate strain in every production condition.

Management of psoriasis patients with hepatitis b or hepatitis C virus infection

The systemic therapies available for the management of Psoriasis (PsO) patients who cannot be treated with more conservative options, such as topical agents and/or phototherapy, with the exception of acitretin, can worsen or reactivate a chronic infection. Therefore, before administering immunosuppressive therapies with either conventional disease-modifying drugs (cDMARDs) or biological ones (bDMARDs) it is mandatory to screen patients for some infections, including hepatitis b virus (HbV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). In particular, the patients eligible to receive an immunosuppressive drug must be screened for the following markers: antibody to hepatitis b core, antibody to hepatitis b surface antigen (anti-HbsAg), HbsAg, and antibody to HCV (anti-HCV). In case HbV or HCV infection is diagnosed, a close collaboration with a consultant hepatologist is needed before and during an immunosuppressive therapy. Concerning therapy with immunosuppressive drugs in PsO patients with HbV or HCV infection, data exist mainly for cyclosporine a (CyA) or bDMARDs (etanercept, adalimumab, infliximab, ustekinumab). The natural history of HbV and HCV infection differs significantly as well as the effect of immunosuppression on the aforementioned infectious diseases. As a rule, in the case of active HbV infection, systemic immunosuppressive antipsoriatic therapies must be deferred until the infection is controlled with an adequate antiviral treatment. Inactive carriers need to receive antiviral prophylaxis 2-4 wk before starting immunosuppressive therapy, to be continued after 6-12 mo from its suspension. Due to the risk of HbV reactivation, these patients should be monitored monthly for the first 3 mo and then every 3 mo for HbV DNA load together with transaminases levels. Concerning the patients who are occult HbV carriers, the risk of HbV reactivation is very low. Therefore, these patients generally do not need antiviral prophylaxis and the sera HbsAg and transaminases dosing can be

Colorectal cancer(CRC)represents the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death *** modern concept of cancer biology indicates that cancer is formed of a small population of cells called cancer stem cells(CSCs),which present both pluripotency and self-renewal *** cells are considered responsible for the progression of the disease,recurrence and tumor ***,some cell signaling pathways participate in CRC survival,proliferation,and selfrenewal properties,and most of them are dysregulated in CSCs,including the Wingless(Wnt)/β-catenin,Notch,Hedgehog,nuclear factor kappa b(NF-κb),Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription(JAK/STAT),peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPAR),phosphatidyl-inositol-3-kinase/Akt/mechanistic target of rapamycin(PI3K/Akt/mTOR),and transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β)/Smad *** this review,we summarize the strategies for eradicating CRC stem cells by modulating these dysregulated pathways,which will contribute to the study of potential therapeutic schemes,combining conventional drugs with CSC-targeting drugs,and allowing better cure rates in anti-CRC therapy.

Antral exfoliative cytology for the detection of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of antral exfoliative cytology method in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)infection in the ***: Fifty patients were submitted to upper digestivetract endoscopy due to complaints of dyspepsia. Thematerial for exfoliative cytology was obtained by extensive brushing of the gastric antral mucosa and Papanicolaou stain was used to identify the bacteria. The authors also performed gastric biopsies to collect material for urease tests and histologic studies, with hematoxylin-eosin and fucsin stains in order to identify the microorganism. The gold standard used to detect the presence of H pylori was an analysis of the combined results from the gastric biopsies by urease test and histological method. RESULTS: Antral exfoliative cytology method exhibited 90.3% sensitivity, 66.6% specificity, accuracy of 81.6%, positive predictive value of 82.3% and negative predictive value of 80.0%, in this population with a prevalence of 63.3%.CONCLUSION: Antral exfoliative cytology was demonstrated to be a sensitive, accurate and easy to perform method for investigating H pylori infection in the stomach.

An ordered nanostructure formed by epitaxial crystallization of a semicrystalline block copolymer on a substrate has been used as a patterned template for the selective deposition of thermally evaporated gold nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of structure-guiding host nanocomposites in which the ordered distribution of the guest particles is guided by the ordering of the host nanostructured block copolymer matrix. This opens new perspectives in the field of polymeric composites related to the maximum enhancement of effective physical properties and to the numerous possible applications that arise due to the presence of long-range order in the spatial distribution of functional nanoparticles.

Immune response to vaccines in children with celiac disease

Celiac disease(CD) is an immune-mediated systemic condition evoked by ingestion of gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible subjects. The disease is featured by a variable combination of clinical signs, specific antibodies, HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 haplotypes, and enteropathy. Vaccination is the most potent intervention for infectious disease prevention. Several factors including age, gender, ethnicity, quality and quantity of vaccine antigen, doses, and route of administration can influence immune response to vaccination, although the main cause of variation in the responsiveness among vaccine recipients is host genetic variability. The HLA system has a fundamental role in identifying the antigens introduced into the host with the vaccines and in the development of specific antibodies, and some HLA phenotypes have been associated with a less effective immunological response. The available literature indicates that the immunological response to vaccines in CD children does not differ markedly from that of general population and antibody titres are high enough to provide long-term protection, except for hepatitis b virus vaccine. In this article, we review and discuss the scarce literature in this field in order to provide clinical practice guidelines to achieve the most efficient monitoring of the response to vaccines in pediatric CD patients.
