Oxidized organic molecules in the tropical free troposphere over Amazonia

New particle formation(NPF) in the tropical free troposphere(FT) is a globally important source of cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and climate. Oxidized organic molecules(OOMs)produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds are believed to contribute to aerosol formation in the tropical FT, but without direct chemical observations. We performed in situ molecular-level OOMs measurements at the Bolivian station Chacaltaya at 5240 m above sea level, on the western edge of Amazonia. For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of OOMs, mainly with 4–5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase(in terms of mass contribution) measurements in tropical FT air from Amazonia. These observations, combined with air mass history analyses, indicate that the observed OOMs are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away. Based on particle-phase measurements, we find that these compounds can contribute to NPF, at least the growth of newly formed nanoparticles, in the tropical FT on a continental scale. Thus, our study is a fundamental and significant step in understanding the aerosol formation process in the tropical FT.

Overweight/Obesity in University Students from Mexico: Comparison Using Different Indices

The goal was to compare body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), and relative fat mas (RFM), to identify the best predictor of overweight and obesity in university students from Mexico. This is a cross-sectional survey with 697 university students from northern and central Mexico (448 women, and 249 men aged 18 - 19 years). Data was collected during 2018. Overweight and obesity were calculated from those indices and for both, female and male students, the order of correlation between a pair of indices were WHtR vs. RFM > WHtR vs. WC > RFM vs. WC > WHtR vs. BMI > BMI vs. WC > RFM vs. BMI. It is concluded to use the WHtR and the RFM to better predict overweight and obesity in young Mexican university students.

Sociodemographic determinants associated with breastfeeding in term infants with low birth weight in Latin American countries

BACKGROUND A progressive decrease in exclusive breastfeeding(BF)is observed in Latin America and the Caribbean compared with global *** possibility of being breastfed and continuing BF for>6 months is lower in low birth weight than in healthy-weight *** To identify factors associated with BF maintenance and promotion,with particular attention to low-and middle-income countries,by studying geographic,socioeconomic,and individual or neonatal health *** A scoping review was conducted in 2018 using the conceptual model of social determinants of health published by the Commission on Equity and Health Inequalities in the United *** extracted data with common characteristics were synthesized and categorized into two main themes:(1)Sociodemographic factors and proximal determinants involved in the initiation and maintenance of BF in low-birth-weight term infants in Latin America;and(2)individual characteristics related to the self-efficacy capacity for BF maintenance and adherence in low-birth-weight term *** This study identified maternal age,educational level,maternal economic capacity,social stratum,exposure to BF substitutes,access to BF information,and quality of health services as mediators for maintaining *** Individual self-efficacy factors that enable BF adherence in at-risk populations should be analyzed for better health outcomes.

To the Editor:Hypophosphatasia(HPP)is a musculoskeletal inborn error-of-metabolism caused by variants in alkaline phosphatase(ALPL)with reduced activity of the serum tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase,[1]which is predominantly expressed in brain,muscle,bones,liver,and kidneys.[2]Accordingly,HPP is a multi-system disorder affecting bones and more rarely extra-osseus organs.[2]Osseus features of HPP include decreased bone quality,osteoid accumulations,reduced bone-mineralization,increased incidence of fractures,premature closure of sutures,bone deformities,dwarfism,Bechterew disease,early loss of teeth,intracranial hypertension,and prolonged bone healing.[1]Extra-osseous features of HPP include seizures,[3]myopathy,[2]hepatopathy,and renal *** responds favorably to enzyme replacement therapy with asfotase-α.[1]

BACKGROUND Maintenance rates of exclusive breastfeeding(EBF)worldwide are low,thus,one of the objectives of the summary of policies on breastfeeding(BF)in world nutrition goals for 2025 are that at least 50%of infants under six months of age receive EBF that *** Objective of this study is to document the rates of EBF in children born in San Ignacio University Hospital(HUSI)and identify factors associated with *** To document the percentages of EBF in those that were born at HUSI and identify factors associated to their *** This is a study of cases and controls in an analytic,retrospective cohort that took children born alive between January 2016 and January 2019 at HUSI located in the city of Bogotá,*** Receiving information about BF at HUSI was able to maintain EBF up until 4 mo(OR=1.65;95%CI:1.02-2.66).The presence of gynecologic and obstetric comorbidities(OR=0.32;95%CI:0.12-0.83),having mastitis(OR=0.56;95%CI:0.33-0.94),and receiving information from mass media(OR=0.52;95%CI:0.31-0.84)are factors associated with not maintaining *** Receiving education at a Women-and Child-Friendly Institution was the only significant factor to achieve EBF until 4 mo,with a frequency greater than the one reported in the country,which matches multiple studies where counseling and individualized support on BF achieve this *** about BF and early detection of obstetric/gynecologic complications must be strengthened among the healthcare staff in charge of mothers during ***,strategies must be promoted to continue BF such as creating milk banks with the objective of increasing BF rates even when mothers return to work.

The catalytic oxidative cou pling of methane(OCM)to C_(2) hydrocarbons(C_(2)H_(6) and C_(2)H_(4))represents one of the most effective ways to convert natural gas to more useful products,which can be performed effectively using La_(0.6)Sr0.4Co_(0.2)Fe_(0.8)O_(3-δ)(LSCF)perovskite hollow fiber membrane *** this work,the effects of adding a thin BaCe_(0.8)Gd_(0.2)O_(3-δ)(BCG)catalyst film onto the inner LSCF fiber surface as the OCM catalyst and a porous Ba0.5Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)(BSCF)perovskite layer onto the outer LSCF surface to improve the oxygen permeation were *** 700℃and 1000℃,methane conversion increased in the order of uncoated,BCG and BSCF-coated,and BCG-coated LSCF hollow fiber while Coselectivity and C_(2)-yield increased in the order of BCG and BSCF-coated,uncoated,and BCG-coated LSCF hollow *** permeation flux at the same temperature range,on the other hand,was enhanced in the order of uncoated,BCG-coated,and BCG and BSCF-coated LSCF hollow *** finding demonstrates the complex interplay between oxygen permeation and OCM *** BCG and BSCFcoated hollow fiber was also subjected to thermal cycles between 850℃and 900℃for up to 175 hours during which the fiber showed minor degradation in oxygen permeation fluxes and relatively stable OCM performance.

Global prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and of NAFLD-hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is estimated to grow in the next *** burden of NAFLD and the evidence that NAFLD-HCC arises also in noncirrhotic patients,explain the urgent need of a better characterization of the molecular mechanisms involved in NAFLD *** and diabetes cause a chronic inflammatory state which favors changes in serum cytokines and adipokines,an increase in oxidative stress,DNA damage,and the activation of multiple signaling pathways involved in cell ***,a role in promoting NAFLD-HCC has been highlighted in the innate and adaptive immune system,dysbiosis,and alterations in bile acids *** dietary,genetic,or combined mouse models have been used to study nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)development and its progression to HCC,but models that fully recapitulate the biological and prognostic features of human NASH are still *** humans,four single nucleotide polymorphisms(PNPLA3,TM6SF2,GCKR,and MBOAT7)have been linked to the development of both NASH and HCC in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients,whereas HSD17B13 polymorphism has a protective *** addition,higher rates of somatic ACVR2A mutations and a novel mutational signature have been recently discovered in NASH-HCC *** knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of NAFLD-HCC will be helpful to personalized screening programs and allow for primary and secondary chemopreventive treatments for NAFLD patients who are more likely to progress to HCC.
