The species composition and infection levels were determined for helminth parasites in the mole crab, Emerita rathbunae, collected from seven sandy beaches from Guerrero and Michoacán, México. A total of 494 crabs were collected between August and December of 2009. The number of crabs that were examined from each beach varied from 40 in Lázaro Cárdenas to 114 in El Revolcadero. The cephalothorax length varied significantly between the sampled beaches, from 32.9 ± 5.5 mm (Ixtapa) to 40.5 ±1.7 mm(Las Trancas). Four species of larval parasites were identified: 1 metacercaria (Microphallus nicolli), 1 cystacanth (profilicollis sp.), 1 cestode (Trypanorhyncha) and 1 nematode (proleptus sp.). Infection levels (prevalence and mean abundance) varied significantly between beaches, due to possible differences in the availability of final or intermediate hosts in beaches visited by tourist and those beaches not visited by tourists, as well as the size of individual hosts. Helminth communities, at levels of component and infracommunity, were characterized by a low number of species (3 to 4) and a high dominance by the metacercaria of M. nicolli. The body size of the hosts was positively correlated with the number of parasites and species richness of helminths, indicating that larger crabs accumulate a higher number of parasites during the lifetime, and that they harbor a higher number of species of helminth than smaller crabs.

Decrease in the Hospital Stay of Neonates with Suspected Nosocomial Sepsis with the Use of a Molecular Biology Technique

Introduction: Diagnostic alternatives that allow microbial identification in blood, such as molecular biology;have shown utility in neonatal sepsis. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a Light Cycler SeptiFast test (LCSF) on days of hospital stay and the use of newborn (NB) antibiotics with suspected sepsis. Methods: We included NB with LCSF test and blood culture (cases) and NB with only blood culture (controls). We evaluated the days of stay, days of antimicrobial use and number of deaths. Statistic analysis: Descriptive statistics was used. The association between the use of LCSF and variables such as mortality, days of stay, use of antimicrobials, and use of mechanical ventilation was analyzed by odds ratio with 95% CI. Results: We included 20 subjects in the case group and 40 in the control group. 8 (40%) of the cases were positive vs 6 (15%) of the controls in the control group. In the controls, the average days of stay were 65 + 15 vs 35 + 10 days of the cases (p Conclusions: The LCSF test influences the days of hospital stay, but does not impact mortality or the use of antimicrobials.

Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall in the Southeast USA: Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions, parameterizations, and Integrated Enstrophy

The overall purpose of this paper is to post-evaluate the predictability of Hurricane Florence using the Advanced Research Weather Research Forecast (WRF) (ARW) version of a mesoscale model. This was performed over the period from 0000 UTC 13 September 2018 through 0000 UTC 18 September 2018. The WRF ARW core resolution used here was the 27-km grid spacing chosen to in order to balance finer resolution against in house processing time and storage. The large-scale analysis showed that a change in the Northern Hemisphere flow regime, especially the flow in the western part of the Northern Hemisphere may have contributed partly to the reduced forward speed of the tropical cyclone. In order to measure the predictability of a system, we will use different convective and boundary layer schemes initialized from the same conditions. The results demonstrated that the sign of the local IRE tendency was similar to that of the Northern Hemisphere Integrated Enstrophy. The results also showed that when the boundary layer, convective, and cloud microphysical schemes of the model were varied, the areal coverage of heavy precipitation of Florence was under-forecast by approximately 10% or more, and the heaviest amounts were under-forecast by an average of about 20%.

Analysis of the Temporal and Spatial Evolution of Recovery and Degradation processes in Vegetated Areas Using a Time Series of Landsat TM Images (1986-2011): Central Region of Chihuahua, Mexico

This paper analyzed the temporal and spatial evolution of vegetation dynamics in various land covers in the basin of the Laguna Bustillos, Region of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. We used an NDVI time series for the months of March to April (early spring). The series was constructed from Landsat TM images for the period 1986-2011. The results show an increase of NDVI for vegetated areas, especially in conifer cover, while shrub and grassland showed a positive trend but with lower statistical significance. The increase in minimum temperatures in early spring, during the study period, was the most important factor in explaining the increase of NDVI in vegetated areas. A spatially distributed analysis shows large areas without an NDVI trend, corresponding to areas with sparse vegetation cover (degraded areas). Moreover, there are also areas with a negative trend (loss of vegetation), explained by the exploitation of trees to produce firewood which is mainly carried out by the ejidos in the region. These results help to focus human and financial resources in places where the benefit will be greatest.

In the search for new materials with applicable magnetic properties in spintronic devices,the aim of this work is to report the synthesis of the lanthanide ferrocobaltite La_(2)CoFeO_(6) using the modified pechini route;the experimental study of structural,morphological and magnetic properties,and the analysis of the electronic structure and bands are obtained in the framework of the Density Functional *** refinement of experimental X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the crystallization of this oxide material in a perovskite-like monoclinic structure,space group p2_(1)/n(#14).Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images revealed that the surface morphology is essentially polycrystalline,with mean grain sizes between 177 and 188 *** dispersive X-ray spectroscopy suggests that the material obtained contains La,Fe,Co and O in the stoichiometric proportions expected by up to 98%.The magnetic susceptibility curves as a function of temperature indicated that the material is ordered ferromagnetically,showing strong irreversibility effects due to the disorder of the Fe and Co cations in the three crystallographic directions of the structure and to the strong distortions in the FeO_(6) and CoO_(6) *** hysteresis curves confirmed the ferromagnetic character of the material for all temperatures evaluated,up to room temperature.I-V response curves revealed a semiconductor-like behavior with a figure of merit exponent 1.53 of the varistor *** ferromagnetic semiconductor behavior suggests the potential applicability of the material in spintronic technological devices.

Societal biosecurity–measures built into everyday society to minimize risks from pests and diseases–is an important aspect of managing epidemics and *** aimed to identify societal options for reducing the transmission and spread of respiratory *** used SARS-CoV-2(severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2)as a case study to meet the immediate need to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually transition to more normal societal conditions,and to catalog options for managing similar pandemics in the *** used a‘solution scanning’*** read the literature;consulted psychology,public health,medical,and solution scanning experts;crowd-sourced options using social media;and collated comments on a ***,we present a list of 519 possible measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission and *** provide a long list of options for policymakers and businesses to consider when designing biosecurity plans to combat SARS-CoV-2 and similar pathogens in the *** also developed an online application to help with this *** encourage testing of actions,documentation of outcomes,revisions to the current list,and the addition of further options.

Effect of Guazuma Leaves （Guazuma ulmifolia） Inclusion as protein Source on Growing Calves

The present work was undertaken in a cattle ranch of the north of puebla state, Mexico. The aim was to incorporate Guazuma leaves （Guazuma ulmifolia） in the diet of growing calves and evaluate its effect on weight gain. Twenty-four Cebu × Swiss calves （approximately live weight 250 kg） were used during all the experimental period （64 d）. They were assigned to a completely randomized design under two treatments （n = 12 for each treatment）： control （T1） consisted of commercial feed based on 15% crude protein （Cp）＋ cut Taiwan grass and the treatment （T2） consisted of a formulated diet containing 14.7% Cp including Guazuma. The composition of the formulated diet consisted of： Guazuma （60%）, rolled corn （12%）, ground sorghum （9%）, oats in grain （7%）, wheat bran （9%） and vitamins and minerals. The feed was offered twice a day at a rate of 3% of live weight for 64 d. The mean daily gain for T1 and T2 was 1.15 g/animal and 1.52 g/animal, respectively （p 〈 0.05）. Results indicate that Guazuma-based supplements resulted in greater productive yield in growing calves.

The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the Urochloa Insurgent, Piata and Signal grasses by varying the phenology in the attributes: stem population dynamics, tissue replacement, leaf:stem relation and weight per stem. The data were analyzed using a completely randomized block design with arrangement in divided plots and four replications, the procedure used was PROC GLM from SAS. The Signal grass presented higher stem density with an average of 450 mp>?2p> stems, while the meadow with Insurgent grass registered the lowest stem density throughout the investigation, with an average of 320 mp>-2p> stems;furthermore, in this treatment, the stem density tended to increase slowly over time (P = 0.05). The Insurgente and signal grasses showed rapid leaf elongation from day 21 of regrowth with 123 and 104 cm stemp>?1p>, while in Piata the accelerated leaf elongation was on day 14 with 113 cm stemp>?1p> where it remained active its growth until day 56 (P > 0.05). As the regrowth age was increasing, the population dynamics of stems and weight per stem were increasing;in Insurgent and signal the leaf elongation and net growth increased to a maximum point to start declining;however, in Piata grass was increasing without decreasing. The trend of the leaf:stem relation was decreasing as the test progressed and senescence increased from day 21 of regrowth.

Real-world evidence (RWE) is clinical evidence on a medical product’s safety and efficacy that is generated using real-world data (RWD) resulting from routine healthcare delivery. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of amoxicillin + clavulanic acid in children with pharyngitis, acute otitis, or acute rhinosinusitis with suspected bacterial origin under normal office and home conditions. Methods: This was a real-life, prospective, observational, pharmacovigilance study. It included children of both sexes between 2 and 12 years old, with a diagnosis of Rhinopharyngitis (tonsillitis), Acute Otitis Media and Rhinosinusitis. The main effectiveness variable evaluated was reduction and time to resolution of symptoms. All patients received Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid suspension 600 mg/42.9 mg/5 mL at a dose of 90 mg/Kg/day in two doses, every 12 hours for 7 days. The evaluations were carried out at the beginning, at 72 hours (3rd day) and at 7 days. All patients underwent culture and antibiogram. Results: The majority of cultures were negative for pathogenic germs, suspecting unidentifiable germs, or viral etiology despite the rigorous selection of subjects following validated scores. The most frequently isolated germ was Staphylococcus aureus;growth of gram-negative bacteria was reported in 33.33% of the cultures. There was a significant improvement in symptoms in children with tonsillitis and rhinosinusitis from the first 72 hours of treatment, persisting until the 7 days. In the otitis media group, returning to normal by the tenth day. During the conduction of this investigation, no adverse effects associated with the prescribed therapy were reported.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mechanical debridement and suturing of the laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap in the treatment of cl inically significant epithelial ingrowth after LASIK. Methods: In a retrospectiv e study, 20 eyes (n=19 patients) in which clinically significant epithelial ingr owth developed after LASIK were treated with lifting of the flap, scraping of th e epithelial ingrowth, and flap suturing. primary outcome measurements including recurrence of ingrowth, uncorrected visual acuity (VA), manifest refraction, be st spectacle-corrected VA, and complications were evaluated at the last postope rative examination. Results: At the last postoperative examination (mean±SD, 10 .5 ±14.3 months; range, 1.5-64 months), 100%of eyes had no recurrence of clin ically significant epithelial ingrowth. The uncorrected VA changed from 20/20 or better in 7 eyes (35%) and 20/40 or better in 15 eyes (75%) preoperatively to 20/20 or better in 9 eyes (45%) and 20/40 or better in 16 eyes (80%) at the l ast follow-up examination. There was no significant change in the mean logarith m of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) uncorrected VA before (mean±SD, 0 .3±0.5; range, -0.1 to 1.7) and after surgery (mean±SD, 0.2±0.4; range, -0. 1 to 1.7) (p=.40). Mean±SD spherical equivalent changed from -0.21±0.82 diopt ers (D) (range, -1.25 to 1.00 D) preoperatively to -0.53±0.89D (range, -2.50 to 0.38 D) at last follow-up (p=.30). No eyes lost 2 or more lines of best spe ctacle-corrected VA, and there were no complications as sociated with the treatment. Conclusions: Suturing the LASIK flap in addition to mechanical debridement of epithelial ingrowth is a safe and effective treatme nt for clinically significant epithelial ingrowth after LASIK.
