A New Statistical Approach to Assess climate Variability in the White Bandama Watershed,Northern cote d’Ivoire

The population of northern côte d’Ivoire, especially in the white Bandama watershed, lives for majority in rural areas and depends on farming, which is mainly linked to climate variability. This study evaluates the trends within watershed’s hydro-climatic variables and their level of significance over the period 1950-2000. The methodological approach consists in applying successively standardized indexes to detect trends and breaks in hydro-climatic long-term data. The Mann-Kendall statistical test lets us know the trends significance and the Kendall-Theil Robust Line test reveals their magnitude. The Student’s t test underlines break years. Results show that although rainfall has decreased, this decline is not statistically significant. However, temperature and potential evapotranspiration have strongly rised and discharge was submitted to high decline. These changes in hydrometeorological variables appeared from 1970 to 1980. This study is different from others conducted on climate variability in the northern côte d’Ivoire by the methodological statistical framework implemented and the understanding of significance level of climate trends. Until now, authors used the standardized index to detect trends in hydro-climatic parameters. For this work, we added the Mann-Kendall statistical test to assess the significance level of these trends at α = 5% and 10%. Then, the Kendall-Theil statistical test was used to highlight the trends magnitude and the student’s t test to know the break years.

油气藏中非烃气体(如cO2和N2)的探测对于油藏的评价和管理非常重要。当利用钻杆测试(DST)来证实油藏产能和进行油藏评价时,高含量非烃气体会妨碍气体充分燃烧,进而对钻杆测试产生消极的影响。弄清油藏流体中非烃组分的特性对优化钻杆测试非常必要。地层流体中cO2含量很高时就不必进行钻杆测试。如果一口井中的所有层位都含有大量cO2,那么这口井就可以直接封堵弃井。传统的cO2含量测试是将试井过程中取得的井下或地面流体样品送到实验室进行分析,流体样品中易反应气体(如cO2)浓度可能会发生很大变化,因为在分析之前,这种气体会与样品中混有的地层水、泥浆滤液或者取样室中其他组分反应。cO2和pH值较高的水(如水基泥浆滤液)很容易形成碳酸盐。井下近红外(NIR)光谱测量可以在取得流体样品之前对流体中的cO2组分在井下进行实时分析。介绍了利用地层测试器进行实时井下流体分析的原理和应用,通过井下流体分析可实时测定井下流体中的cO2和烃类含量。结合现场实例,介绍了如何用井下实时测量cO2含量来优化完井和钻杆测试决策,并且经实例证实,实时测量的cO2浓度与随后实验室测定结果一致。

Ellagic acid induces apoptosis through inhibition of nuclear factor κB in pancreatic cancer cells

AIM:To determine the effect of ellagic acid on apop-tosis and proliferation in pancreatic cancer cells and to determine the mechanism of the pro-survival effects of ellagic acid. METHODS:The effect of ellagic acid on apoptosis was assessed by measuring Phosphatidylserine externalization,caspase activity,mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA fragmentation;and proliferation by measuring DNA thymidine incorporation. Mitochondrial membrane potential was measured in permeabilized cells,and in isolated mitochondria. Nuclear factor kB(NF-kB) activity was measured by electromobility shift assay(EMSA) . RESULTS:We show that ellagic acid,a polyphenolic compound in fruits and berries,at concentrations 10 to 50 mmol/L stimulates apoptosis in human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells. Further,ellagic acid decreases proliferation by up to 20-fold at 50 mmol/L. Ellagic acid stimulates the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis associated with mitochondrial depolarization,cytochrome c release,and the downstream caspaseactivation. Ellagic acid does not directly affect mitochondria. Ellagic acid dose-dependently decreased NF-kB binding activity. Furthermore,inhibition of NF-kB activity using IkB wild type plasmid prevented the effect of ellagic acid on apoptosis. cONcLUSION:Our data indicate that ellagic acid stimulates apoptosis through inhibition of the prosu-rvival transcription factor NF-kB.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are characterised by inflammation that compromises the integrity of the epithelial barrier. The intestinal epithelium is not only a static barrier but has evolved complex mechanisms to control and regulate bacterial interactions with the mucosal surface. Apical tight junction proteins are critical in the maintenance of epithelial barrier function and control of paracellular permeability. The characterisation of alterations in tight junction proteins as key players in epithelial barrier function in inflammatory bowel diseases is rapidly enhancing our understanding of critical mechanisms in disease pathogenesis as well as novel therapeutic opportunities. Here we give an overview of recent literature focusing on the role of tight junction proteins, in particular claudins, in inflammatory bowel diseases and inflammatory bowel disease associated colorectal cancer.

Transcriptome analysis of sugar beet root maggot （Tetanops myopaeformis） genes modulated by the Beta vulgaris host

Sugar beet root maggot （SBRM, Tetanops myopaeformis von R6der） is a major but poorly understood insect pest of sugar beet （Beta vulgaris L.）. The molecular mecha- nisms underlying plant defense responses are well documented, however, little information is available about complementary mechanisms for insect adaptive responses to overcome host resistance. To date, no studies have been published on SBRM gene expression pro- filing. Suppressive subtractive hybridization （SSH） generated more than 300 SBRM ESTs differentially expressed in the interaction of the pest with a moderately resistant （F1016） and a susceptible （F1010） sugar beet line. Blast2go v. 3.2 search indicated that over 40% of the differentially expressed genes had known functions, primarily driven by fruit fly D. melanogaster genes. Expression patterns of 18 selected EST clones were confirmed by RT-PcR analysis. Gene Ontology （go） analysis predicted a dominance of metabolic and catalytic genes involved in the interaction of SBRM with its host. SBRM genes function- ing during development, regulation, cellular process, signaling and under stress conditions were annotated. SBRM genes that were common or unique in response to resistant or susceptible interactions with the host were identified and their possible roles in insect responses to the host are discussed.

We investigate the action of time-dependent detunings upon the excitation inversion of a cooper pair box interacting with a nanomechanical *** method employs the Jaynes–cummings model with damping,assuming different decay rates of the cooper pair box and various fixed and time-dependent *** is shown that,when the presence of damping plus constant detunings destroys the collapse/revival effects,convenient choices of time-dependent detunings allow one to reconstruct such events in a perfect *** is also shown that the mean excitation of the nanomechanical resonator is more robust against damping of the cooper pair box for convenient values of time-dependent detunings.

Background: Latino individuals are the largest minority group and the fastest growing population group in the United States, yet there are few studies comparing the clinical features of Alzheimer disease (AD) in th is population with those found in Anglo (white non-Latino) patients. Objective: To compare the age at AD symptom onset in Latino and Anglo individuals. Design: cross-sectional assessment using standardized methods to collect and compare a ge at AD symptom onset, demographic variables, and medical variables. Setting: F ive National Institute on Aging-sponsored Alzheimer’s Disease centers with exp erience evaluating Spanish-speaking individuals. Patients: We evaluated 119 Lat ino and 55 Anglo patients who had a diagnosis of AD. Main Outcome Measure: Age a t symptom onset. Results: After adjusting for center, sex, and years of educatio n, Latino patients had a mean age at symptom onset 6.8 years earlier (95%confid ence interval, 3.5-10.3 years earlier) than Anglo patients. conclusions: An ear lier age at symptom onset suggests that US mainland Latino individuals may exper ience an increased burden of AD compared with Anglo individuals. The basis for t he younger age at symptom onset remains obscure.
