Introduction: Studies on attitudes and practices are increasingly used but not specifically related to the motivations for the use of reproductive health care among women of fertile age, living in urban areas and in different social contexts. Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the associations between the variables of social status (degree of poverty in the studied groups) and the variables of fecundity (representations, tensions, practices and control of fertility) and, in addition, to compare access to health care in the different studied groups, assessing the association between use of maternal health care and poverty in urban areas. Design: A case-control study was conducted in the Municipality of Lisbon, Portugal, with a total sample of 1513 women of fertile age: 499 cases of women considered very poor were selected from the database of beneficiaries of RSI (Social Welfare Payment for Inclusion);1014 controls (two controls for each selected case), divided as 507 poor women selected from the other beneficiaries of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon and 507 non-poor women selected from four Health Centers from the Municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. A total of 1054 women answered the questionnaire: 304 cases (response rate of 61%) and 750 (response rate of 74%) controls. The statistical analysis involved descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic regression. Results: The analysis confirms the association between poverty and patterns and representations of fecun dity regarding pregnancy planning. The results of this study thus show the existence of different distributions on several variables and the gradients of poverty. Regarding access to health care, the major impact of poverty on women is limiting access to pharmaceuticals. The incapacity to afford the cost of health care appears as a central aspect of access to health care. The results observed in the literature raise the hypothesis according to which cytokinin plays important roles in photosynthetic metabolisms and antioxidant enzymes. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of the isolated cytokinin kinetin at the production cycle, seeking to analyze its effects on enzyme activity and photosynthetic parameters. The plants treated with CK presented reduction of leaf CO_2 assimilation rate(Pn) and stomatal conductance(Gs), while that transpiration rate(Tr) was unaffected. The internal CO_2 concentrations decreased with the increase in cytokinin levels, but were maintained under CK 50 mg·L^(-1). The plants treated with CK 75 mg·L^(-1) was verified higher carboxylation efficiency(Pn/Ci), which was associated to values of CO_2 assimilation and transpiration unaltered. Apparent electron transport rate showed variations in the concentration of 25 mg·L^(-1). Considering the study of enzyme activity, on the other hand, it cannot be stated that kinetin has an effective action in delaying oxidative damage. It presents mixed results, since an efficiency in the application of cytokinin was not observed, presenting induction levels of ascorbate peroxidase activity. Thus, further research is needed to determine more precisely the effects of kinetin on gas exchange and antioxidant enzymes in anthurium plants.

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of compounds derived from the ruthenium transition metal with the nitrogenous ligand 4-aminopy- ridine (4-ampy). The synthesized compounds were characterized by FTIRmed spectroscopy and TG-DTA thermal analysis. For the cytotoxic evaluation of ruthenium compounds, a 66.0 μM aqueous solution containing the complex and the study of data observed in the biological assessment was performed using variance (ANOVA) analysis, followed by Tukey’s multiple comparisons test. Differences between treatments were considered significant when the p-value was less than 0.05 (p 3(4-ampy)(H2O)2]·1/2H2O, which, due to the low solubility in an aqueous medium, was modified to increase its solubility for biological tests. The analysis of the spectra in the medium infrared region (FTIR) for the complex [Ru(Cl)3(4-ampy)(H2O)2]·1/2H2O, shows displacements of the bands observed at 1625 - 1566 cm﹣1 ν(C=C) e (C=N), indicating that coordination to the metallic center occurred by this group. Band displacements were observed in the modified Ru (III) complex, which suggests the presence of the 4-ampy ligand and the coordination by the groups ν(C=C) and (C=N) after the modification. In recent years, researchers worldwide have concentrated on obtaining, developing, and modifying drugs used as chemotherapeutic agents. The evaluation of the cell viability of the modified Ru (III) compound demonstrated cytotoxic effects in the MCF-7 cell line (15.33% ± DP 2.7) but did not affect normal cells (PBMC), which reflects the potential for possible applications.

Comparative Analysis and Validation Methodologies of GC and HPLC for Analysis of Cholesterol in Meat Products

This study validated different extraction methodologies and compared the quantification of cholesterol by gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in mg per 100 g of Italian-type salami and traditional bologna. The GC method used was direct saponification of the samples without derivatizations and the HPLC method was used to extract of the lipid samples. The GC limits of detection and quantification obtained for cholesterol were, respectively, 0.001 and 0.003 mg.g–1. The HPLC values were 0.005 mg.g–1 and 0.016 mg.g–1. The GC recovery rate was 97.10 ± 0.13 and that of HPLC was 93.33 ± 0.22. Comparison of the cholesterol quantity found using the two chromatographic techniques shows that both are capable of quantifying cholesterol in the foods. With regard to costs, analysis time, the cost/benefit relationship was better with gas chromatography than that obtained with high performance liquid chromatography.

Oxidation of lipids in various products,along with the growth of medically important pathogens,has led to a search for medicinal plants with antioxidant and antimicrobial *** a result,the aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus(EO-Eg).Antioxidant activity was assessed by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate(DPPH)assay *** components were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)*** activity and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)were assessed by using the broth microdilution method with standard multidrug-resistant bacterial *** main EO-Eg compounds identified by GC-MS were isopulegol,citronellal,and citronellol,which are primarily used in the industrial ***-Eg demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity with an effective concentration(EC50)of 4.48μL/mL owing to the presence of phenolic *** antibacterial activity,the EO-Eg displayed a broad antimicrobial spectrum of antimicrobial activity across the different resistance phenotypes *** most notable antibacterial activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus 169 MRSA(MIC=0.0625%).As a result,our findings suggest that EO-Eg has antioxidant and antibacterial potential against hospital-acquired multidrug-resistant pathogens,which may be correlated with its major components.

Rhizopus is fungus of the order Mucorales, responsible for invasive diseases called mucormycosis. The correct identification of these fungi is one of the main questions raised in the literature since the diagnosis is not simple, being the necessary detection in biopsies of infected tissues and isolation of the microorganism for identification by morphological and molecular methods. In vitro susceptibility testing results are not fully clear since there are reports showing that in vitro resistance does not always mean therapeutic failure. This paper describes a case of rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis in a patient with alcoholic chronic pancreatitis and secondary mellitus diabetes involving microbiological diagnostic, antifungal susceptibility tests for conidia and hypha and clinical correlation. The causative agent was identified by morphological characteristics and DNA sequencing. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for amphotericin B (AMB), itraconazole (ITZ) and terbinafine (TERB) was determined by broth microdilution method. Standardization of the dynamic growth evaluation patterns using the automated system BCT (BioCell-Tracer?) was obtained allowing to determining hyphae growth control and evaluating the effect of different concentrations of amphotericin B, itraconazole and terbinafine directly on growing hyphae. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) for the combination of the two antifungals that the patient received at the same time, terbinafine and itraconazole, was also determined trying to correlate with clinical outcome. Strains isolated of retro-orbital abscess were identified as Rhizopus oryzae. MIC results (MIC) testing conidia showed high sensibility to amphotericin B and itraconazole in comparison to the obtained for terbinafine. The tests in the automated system BCT using hyphae showed sensibility to all tested antifungal agents and the FIC results for combination in vitro between terbinafine and itraconazole showed synergism consisten
