Photodynamic therapy(PDT)can take place in the presence of three elements:Light with an appropriate wavelength;a photosensitizer;and the presence of oxygen.This type of treatment is very effective overall against bacterial,viral and mycotic cells.In the last 10 years many papers have been published on PDT with different types of photosensitizers(e.g.,methylene blue,toluidine blue,indocyanine green,curcumin-based photosensitizers),different wavelengths(e.g.,460 nm,630 nm,660 nm,810 nm)and various parameters(e.g.,power of the light,time of illumination,number of sessions).In the scientific literature all types of PDT seem very effective,even if it is difficult to find a standard protocol for each oral pathology.PDT could be an interesting way to treat some dangerous oral infections refractory to common pharmacological therapies,such as candidiasis from multidrug-resistant Candida spp.

Diabetes is a heterogeneous metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from the destruction or malfunction of pancreaticβcells,insulin resistance in peripheral tissues,or both,and results in a non-sufficient production of insulin.To adjust blood glucose levels,diabetic patients need exogenous insulin administration together with medical nutrition therapy and physical activity.With the aim of improving insulin availability in diabetic patients as well as ameliorating diabetes comorbidities,different strategies have been investigated.The first approaches included enhancing endogenousβcell activity or transplanting new islets.The protocol for this kind of intervention has recently been optimized,leading to standardized procedures.It is indicated for diabetic patients with severe hypoglycemia,complicated by impaired hypoglycemia awareness or exacerbated glycemic lability.Transplantation has been associated with improvement in all comorbidities associated with diabetes,quality of life,and survival.However,different trials are ongoing to further improve the beneficial effects of transplantation.Furthermore,to overcome some limitations associated with the availability of islets/pancreas,alternative therapeutic strategies are under evaluation,such as the use of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)or induced pluripotent stem cells for transplantation.The cotransplantation of MSCs with islets has been successful,thus providing protection against proinflammatory cytokines and hypoxia through different mechanisms,including exosome release.The use of induced pluripotent stem cells is recent and requires further investigation.The advantages of MSC implantation have also included the improvement of diabetes-related comorbidities,such as wound healing.Despite the number of advantages of the direct injection of MSCs,new strategies involving biomaterials and scaffolds have been developed to improve the efficacy of mesenchymal cell delivery with promising results.In conclusion,this paper offered an overview

Background: Adherence to medications is dependent upon a variety of factors, including individual characteristics of the patient, interactions with health care providers, and medication complexity. Even though several studies were conducted to test intervention strategies, results are uncertain. Aim: The aim of the study is to assess if a tailored combined intervention strategy improves medication adherence in a large population of post-menopausal women affected by hypertension or metabolic syndrome. Methods: We enrolled 6833 patients aged 50 to 69 years, 85.7% with hypertension, and 14.3% with metabolic syndrome. A network between patients, general practitioners, and cardiologists was established. Interventions included education, adequate information to patients, a simplified scheme of treatment, and periodic adherence assessment. These were either delivered as healthcare provider supports or using modern technology. Medication adherence was estimated by the proportion of days covered for all classes of drugs after the index date. Results: Non-adherent hypertensive women were 297 (5%), and those with metabolic syndrome were 73 (7.4%) (p Conclusions: The rate of non-adherence in both settings of postmenopausal women was 7.7%, much lower than that described in the literature. This rate was increased in patients with metabolic syndrome;probably it is related to the complexity of the therapeutic scheme or to a poor consciousness of the disease. Therefore, implementing a tailored combined intervention can improve significantly patients’ adherence to medical therapy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is classified as a multigenic,multifactorial,and heterogeneous neurodegenerative/neuroinflammatory disease that slays especially upper and lower motor neurons controlling voluntary muscle activity.After the insurgence that is characterized by typical symptoms such as weakness in the limbs and muscle twitches,the disease rapidly evolves into progressive muscle atrophy,paralysis,and lastly death occurring by respiratory failure usually within 2-4 years of diagnosis.

The United Nations(UN)’s call for a decade of“ecosystem restoration”was prompted by the need to address the extensive impact of anthropogenic activities on natural ecosystems.Marine ecosystem restoration is increasingly necessary due to increasing habitat degredation in deep waters(>200 m depth).At these depths,which are far beyond those accessible by divers,only established and emerging robotic platforms such as remotely operated vehicles(ROVs),autonomous underwater vehicles(AUVs),landers,and crawlers can operate through manipulators and multiparametric sensor arrays(e.g.,optoacoustic imaging,omics,and environmental probes).The use of advanced technologies for deep-sea ecosystem restoration can provide:①high-resolution three-dimensional(3D)imaging and acoustic mapping of substrates and key taxa,②physical manipulation of substrates and key taxa,③real-time supervision of remote operations and long-term ecological monitoring,and④the potential to work autonomously.Here,we describe how robotic platforms with in situ manipulation capabilities and payloads of innovative sensors could autonomously conduct active restoration and monitoring across large spatial scales.We expect that these devices will be particularly useful in deep-sea habitats,such as①reef-building cold-water corals,②soft-bottom bamboo corals,and③soft-bottom fishery resources that have already been damaged by offshore industries(i.e.,fishing and oil/gas).

The manuscript deals with our studies and experiences in the assessment of cytoskeleton in different cellular models and situations.The immunofluorescent study of several cytoskeletal proteins was relevant in the evaluation of a therapy for osteoarthritis,in case of alkaptonuria and in testing the efficacy of docetaxel in neuroblastoma cancer cells leading to apoptosis.A relevant part of our experience focus on the study of cytoskeleton in seminiferous epithelium and spermatozoa,identifying alterations affecting blood-testis barrier after a silver nanoparticle treatment,chromosomal segregation in case of varicocele,sperm motility and diagnosing systematic sperm defects as“Primary ciliary dyskinesia”and“Dysplasia of the fibrous sheath”.The evaluation of cytoskeleton represents a specific and sensitive analysis in establishing the health status of different cells.

Differently from the central nervous system(CNS),the peripheral nervous system(PNS)exhibits a high regenerative capacity.This ability is related to the remarkable plasticity of Schwann cells(SCs)which after nerve injury convert to a repair-promoting phenotype to a large extent.Nerve injury is accompanied by a rapid rise of thrombin levels(Bushi et al.,2016;Gera et al.,2016).Thrombin is the key effector protease of the coagulation cascade which elicits hormonelike actions by the activation of G-protein coupled receptors known as proteaseactivated receptors(PARs).Inflammation and coagulation are two complex and interconnected pathways whose mutual interactions have been only partially elucidated.

A Framework for the Assessment of Research and Its Impacts

This paper proposes a holistic framework for the development of models for the assessment of research activities and their impacts. It distinguishes three dimensions, including in an original way, data as a main dimension, together with theory and methodology. Each dimension of the framework is further characterized by three main building blocks： education, research, and innovation （theory）; efficiency, effectiveness, and impact （methodology）; and availability, interoperability, and ＂unit-free＂ property （data）. The different dimensions and their nine constituent building blocks are attributes of an overarching concept, denoted as ＂quality.＂ Three additional quality attributes are identified as implementation factors （tailorability, transparency, and openness） and three ＂enabling＂ conditions （convergence, mixed methods, and knowledge infrastructures） complete the fi-amework. A framework is required to develop models of metrics. Models of metrics are necessary to assess the meaning, validity, and robustness of metrics. The proposed framework can be a useful reference for the development of the ethics of research evaluation. It can act as a common denominator for different analytical levels and relevant aspects and is able to embrace many different and heterogeneous streams of literature. Directions for future research are provided.
