Rasch validation of the Chinese parent-child interaction scale (CPCIS)

Background Proper parent-child interaction is crucial for child development, but an assessment tool in Chinese is currently lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a parent-reported parent-child interaction scale for Chinese preschool children. Methods The Chinese parent-child interaction scale (CPCIS) was designed by an expert panel based on the literature and clinical observations in the Chinese context. The initial CPCIS had 14 parent-child interactive activity items. Psychometric properties of the CPCIS were examined using the Rasch model and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Convergent validity was investigated by the associations between CPCIS and family income, maternal education level, and children's school readiness. Results The study recruited 567 Chinese parent-child pairs from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, who completed the CPCIS. Six out of the 14 items in the initial CPCIS were dropped due to suboptimal fi t values. The refined 8-item CPCIS was shown to be valid and reliable by Rasch models and CFA. The person separation reliability and Cronbach's α of the CPCIS were 0.81 and 0.82, respectively. The CPCIS scores were positively associated with family's socioeconomic status (η2 = 0.05,P < 0.001), maternal education level (η2 = 0.08,P < 0.001), and children's school readiness (η2 = 0.01,P < 0.01). Conclusion CPCIS is an easily administered, valid, and reliable tool for the assessment of parent-child interactions in Chinese families.

A historical re-analysis of the calamitous midget typhoon passing through Hong Kong region on 18 September 1906 and its storm surge impact to Hong Kong region

A typhoon passed through Hong Kong region suddenly and unexpectedly on 18 September 1906(the“Typhoon 1906”)and had a disastrous impact on Victoria Harbour and its surroundings in just a couple of *** the year 1906 was the“Bingwu”year in the Chinese calendar,the typhoon is also known historically as the“Bingwu Typhoon”.Tremendous loss of lives and property resulted,and the shipping and fishing communities were *** mysteries arising from this calamitous typhoon have existed to date:1)Why the Hong Kong region Observatory was not able to provide any forewarning?2)whether the storm surge reported in some contemporary records is entirely credible?This paper will focus on both of *** this paper,we re-analyse historical weather observations recorded in various historical documents and estimate the possible storm size,intensity and track of Typhoon 1906 using tropical cyclone *** on the re-analyses,the storm surges,storm tides and wave heights in Hong Kong region are also estimated using storm surge and wave *** results reveal that Typhoon 1906 was a midget typhoon,with a radius of maximum winds of 11 km or smaller,during its passage through Hong Kong *** explains why it was technically impossible for a forewarning to be given at that time when real-time weather observations from ships,meteorological satellites and radars were *** also estimate that the maximum storm surges(storm tides)in Hong Kong region were not higher than 0.82 m(2.43 mCD)and 1.98 m(4.15 mCD)in Victoria Harbour and Tolo Harbour *** figures are found to be limited by the intensity and the storm size of the ***,we conclude that the previously documented storm surge figures are not supported by the present study.

Chinese medicine practitioner turnover rate and the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong,China

A joint computational-experimental study of intracranial aneurysms:Importance of the aspect ratio

Rupture of a cerebral aneurysm （abnormal swelling of blood vessel in the brain） will cause subarachnoid hemorrhage, and will result in an alarming rate of mortality and morbidity. A joint computational-experimental study is conducted to assess the importance of the aspect ratio in the dynamics of blood flow. The aspect ratio is defined here to be the ratio of the height of the aneurysm to the linear dimension of the neck. Idealized models of such aneurysms located near a bifurcation point were investigated. Numerical simulations for hemodynamic properties like shear stress and flow rate were performed. The computational results were verified experimentally with specially fabricated phantoms, blood mimicking fluid and Doppler ultrasound imaging. Excellent agreements were obtained. Two features are highlighted, providing information in the intensely debated link between rupture risk and geometric factors. On increasing the aspect ratios, firstly, a jet impinging on the distal part of the neck can be observed, and secondly, a region of positive shear stress gradient can be found there. Furthermore, computational analyses for four patient-specific models were conducted to correlate with the results of idealized models and to provide further clinical insight.

Life skill-based training is essential for intellectual disabled individuals to regain autonomy and social *** reality(VR)could deliver a nascent application that is more engaging and *** objective of this study was to evaluate the training effects of the VR-based multiple life skill training program on life skill perfor-mance,self-efficacy,memory,cognitive and behavioral functions via a multicenter randomized controlled trial.A total of 145 intellectual disabled participants were recruited for a randomized controlled trial with three in-tervention arms:VR(n=42);traditional(n=53);and control(n=50).The life skill tasks for the interventions included 1)grocery shopping,2)cooking,and 3)kitchen *** measures were performance scores for the three tasks,self-efficacy scale,digit span score,and Frontal Assessment Battery score,graded by blinded ***-after effects of each group were evaluated using separated Wilcoxon Signed-rank *** sig-nificantly improved cooking,cleaning performance,and memory span,while traditional training significantly improved shopping,cooking,and cleaning *** generalized estimating equation evaluated effects between groups adjusted for age,gender and intelligence quotient(IQ).VR had significantly larger improvement effects in cooking and cleaning than the control group and memory span compared to traditional training and controls *** appeared to be a significant confounder on the training *** work may consider developing artificial intelligence to customize programs depending on IQ level.

Wide-bandgap perovskites are recently drawing tremendous attention in the community for high-efficiency all-perovskite tandem solar ***,the formamidinium (FA^+) and methylammonium (MA^+) based wide-bandgap mixed halide perovskites suffered from high density of traps and pin-holes,*** understanding on the crystallization and film formation processes are keys to overcome those challenges but not yet clearly *** this study,an in-situ photoluminescence technique was used to investigate the perovskite crystallization during the thermal annealing *** is found that the crystallization of a mixed halide perovskite with bromide (Br^-) and iodine (I^-) ions following the Ostward ripening crystal ***,it is found that the initial nucleation reaction is quickly completed in the first few seconds,however,leaving the small crystals with inhomogeneous *** different aggregation affinities of such inhomogeneous small crystals provoke the formation of pin-holes during the thermal annealing *** engineering the precursor solution to control the nucleation rate,the chemical composition of the small crystals has become *** pin-hole free high Br-composited wide-bandgap MA0.9Cs0.1Pb(I0.6Br0.4)3 perovskite films with bandgap energy of 1.8 eV have been *** corresponding photovoltaic devices have achieved an encouraging device efficiency of 15.1% with superb photostability.

Treatment Satisfaction with Insulin Glargine in Insulin-Naïve Type 2 Diabetes Patients—A Hong Kong Based Registry

Objective: To evaluate patient satisfaction with insulin glargine. Design: Multicentre observational registry. Data were collected at baseline/inclusion visit, and 12 and 24 weeks. Setting: Physicians in Hong Kong, who managed type 2 diabetes patients and had >5 years’ experience in using insulin glargine. Patients: People with type 2 diabetes, new to insulin, aged 18 - 75 years, who were previously being treated with ≤3 oral antidiabetes drugs (OAD) and had HbA1c > 7%, and in whom the?physicians had chosen to prescribe glargine for the first time. Main outcome measures: Treatment satisfaction assessed by Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQs), glycaemic control (fasting blood glucose and HbA1c) and adverse events. Results: Between April 2010-October 2011, 41 patients completed the study. Average duration of diabetes and OAD therapy was 7.8 ± 8.0 years and 6.7 ± 7.4 years, respectively. The global DTSQs treatment satisfaction scores improved from 20.9 at baseline to 28.4 (p < 0.05) at the end of 24 weeks insulin glargine treatment. Analysis of DTSQs scores showed a decrease in perceived frequency of hyperglycaemia (4.1 to 1.9, p < 0.001) and hypoglycemia (2.2 to 1.5, p = 0.079). Perceived convenience (0.60, p < 0.025) and flexibility (0.9, p < 0.009) were also improved from baseline. Reduction in mean HbA1c (10.2% ± 2.2% to 7.0% ± 1.0%) and fasting blood glucose (10.9 ± 4.0 mmol/L to 6.4 ± 1.8 mmol/L) from baseline to study termination was significant (p < 0.05). Almost half (48.7%) of patients achieved HbA1c ≤ 7.0%, while 26.0% patients had FBG < 5.6 mmol/L. In total, 9 (22.0%) patients experienced at least one hypoglycemia event;there were no reports of severe hypoglycaemia. Inhibitory effect of different Dendrobium species on LPS-induced inflammation in macrophages via suppression of MAPK pathways

Dendrobii Caulis(DC), named ‘Shihu' in Chinese, is a precious herb in traditional Chinese medicine. It is widely used to nourish stomach, enhance body fluid production, tonify "Yin" and reduce heat. More than thirty Dendrobium species are used as folk medicine. Some compounds from DC exhibit inhibitory effects on macrophage inflammation. In the present study, we compared the anti-inflammatory effects among eight Dendrobium species. The results provided evidences to support Dendrobium as folk medicine, which exerted its medicinal function partially by its inhibitory effects on inflammation. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Dendrobium species, mouse macrophage cell line RAW264.7 was activated by lipopolysaccharide. The nitric oxide(NO) level was measured using Griess reagent while the pro-inflammatory cytokines were tested by ELISA. The protein expressions of inducible NO synthase(iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) phosphorylation were evaluated by Western blotting analysis. Among the eight Dendrobium species, both water extracts of D. thyrsiflorum ***(DTW) and D. chrysotoxum Lindl(DCHW) showed most significant inhibitory effects on NO production in a concentration-dependent manner. DTW also significantly reduced TNF-α, MCP-1, and IL-6 production. Further investigations showed that DTW suppressed iNOS and COX-2 expression as well as ERK and JNK phosphorylation, suggesting that the inhibitory effects of DTW on LPS-induced macrophage inflammation was through the suppression of MAPK pathways. In conclusion, D. thyrsiflorum *** was demonstrated to have potential to be used as alternative or adjuvant therapy for inflammation.

Assessment of the damages and direct economic loss in Hong Kong due to Super Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018

Super Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong on September 16,2018,necessitating the issuance of the highest tropical cyclone warning signal,No.10 Hurricane *** ferocious winds and record-breaking storm surge,Mangkhut brought the most serious and widespread destruction to the territory in the recent three decades.A series of post event information search,field visits and damage surveys has been conducted by the Hong Kong Observatory(HKO)and the findings on the damages and impacts caused by Mangkhut in different parts of the territory are documented in this ***,by analyzing the economic loss data reported by various government departments,public utilities and organizations in Hong Kong and the statistics on insurance claims from the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers(HKFI),the estimated direct economic loss due to Mangkhut in Hong Kong is about HK$4.60 billion,which is about 3.8 times to that of Super Typhoon Hato in *** the contrary,in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,the estimated direct economic loss due to Hato is significantly higher than that of *** could be attributed to the early and effective warnings for Mangkhut,increased public awareness and typhoon preparedness for Mangkhut in 2018 since the fierce attack of Hato in 2017,and infrastructure enhancement of the major impact areas.
