Characteristics of particle fluxes in the Prydz Bay polynya, Eastern Antarctica

The settling of particulate carbon in seawater is a key component of the ocean carbon cycle. We deployed a set of sediment trap in the polynya of Prydz Bay from December 2010 to December 2011 to investigate the seasonal variations in particle fluxes. There was a clear seasonal variation in the particle fluxes, with maximum and minimum fluxes recorded during the summer and winter, respectively. The average total flux over the sampling period was 193.58 mg m^(-2)d^(-1), and the average fluxes of organic carbon(C_(org)), inorganic carbon(C_(inorg)), and biogenic silica(Si_(bio)) were 721.78, 28.67, and 2382.80 μmol m^(-2) d^(-1), respectively. Si_(bio)was the main contributor to the total mass flux, and strongly correlated with C_(org). The high Si_(bio)/C_(org)molar ratios(>1) suggest that C_(org)was transported to deep sea in association with Si_(bio). By comparing remote sensing data of sea ice and chlorophyll in the upper water column, we found that the dynamics of carbon fluxes were closely related to changes in sea ice. Algae in sea ice may have a key role in biological pump processes in early summer. Apart from the ice algae bloom period, variations in carbon fluxes generally corresponded with phytoplankton blooms in the upper water. The ballast effect controlled the particle settling velocity and the efficiency of the biological pump. Sea ice rafts initiated the first particle export event and enhanced the particle settling efficiency during melting period. As diatoms might become less dominant in the ice-free area, sea ice loss may cause the efficiency of the biological pump efficiency to decrease over the long term.

背景:研究表明脊髓损伤与铁死亡存在密切联系,而川芎嗪具有调控氧化还原反应的功能。目的:探究川芎嗪对脊髓损伤大鼠铁死亡的调控作用及机制。方法:将36只雌性SD大鼠随机分为假手术组、模型组及川芎嗪组,每组12只。模型组、川芎嗪组大鼠采用改良Allen’s法建立脊髓损伤模型,造模后分别腹腔注射生理盐水、川芎嗪注射液,1次/d,连续治疗28d;假手术组不建模也不进行治疗。结果与结论:①川芎嗪组治疗14,21,28 d的运动功能BBB评分低于假手术组(P<0.05)、高于模型组(P<0.05);②治疗28 d的苏木精-伊红染色显示,模型组大鼠脊髓组织可见空洞形成,局部见坏死组织及炎性浸润,并伴有纤维组织形成;川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织缺损面积较小,炎性浸润及纤维组织形成少于模型组;③治疗28 d的普鲁士蓝染色显示,模型组大鼠脊髓组织内可见大量铁沉积,川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织内铁沉积少于模型组;④治疗28 d,与假手术组比较,模型组大鼠脊髓组织内谷胱甘肽(GSH)、超氧化物歧化酶水平降低(P<0.05),丙二醛水平升高(P<0.05);与模型组比较,川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织内谷胱甘肽、超氧化物歧化酶水平升高(P<0.05),丙二醛水平降低(P<0.05);⑤治疗28d,qRT-PCR与Westernblot检测显示,与假手术组比较,模型组大鼠脊髓组织内谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶4、铁蛋白重链、铁输出蛋白的mRNA与蛋白表达水平均降低(P<0.05);与模型组比较,川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织内谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶4、铁蛋白重链、铁输出蛋白的mRNA与蛋白表达水平均升高(P<0.05);⑥治疗28 d的免疫荧光染色显示,假手术组大鼠脊髓组织神经元特异性核蛋白表达最多,模型组大鼠脊髓组织神经元特异性核蛋白表达最少;⑦结果表明,川芎嗪可通过调控铁死亡改善脊髓损伤大鼠的运动功能并起到神经保护作用。

背景:目前多数学者认为,幼年就患有严重脊柱畸形的脑性瘫痪患儿(<15岁)其脊柱畸形可能存在更高的进展风险,其原因可能来源于骨盆倾斜、疼痛等导致的行动时失衡。目的:探究痉挛型脑性瘫痪儿童腰椎发育与髋关节发育的关系。方法:回顾性分析2014年1月至2021年12月就诊于北京中医药大学东直门医院的痉挛型脑性瘫痪患儿102例。所有入院患儿均完成骨盆正位及腰椎侧位X射线片,通过骨盆正位X射线片测量股骨头偏移百分比、中心边缘角、颈干角、髋臼指数,通过腰椎侧位X射线片测量矢状位Cobb角、骶骨倾斜角、弓顶距、腰椎前凸指数,进一步分析两类指标的相关性。将所有患儿依据股骨头偏移百分比分为正常组、风险组、髋关节半脱位组及髋关节全脱位组,评价不同组间腰椎指标的差异。结果与结论:①Pearson相关性分析表明,股骨头偏移百分比和腰椎矢状位Cobb角、弓顶距呈中等程度正相关,与腰椎前凸指数呈弱正相关;中心边缘角与弓顶距呈中等程度负相关,与矢状位Cobb角呈弱负相关;颈干角与矢状位Cobb角、前凸指数呈极弱正相关或不相关;髋臼指数与矢状位Cobb角、弓顶距呈弱正相关;其余指标间未发现具有相关性;②根据股骨头偏移百分比将患儿分为4组,其中正常组25例,风险组41例,髋关节半脱位组27例,髋关节全脱位组9例;风险组、髋关节半脱位组、髋关节全脱位组矢状位Cobb角均较正常组明显增加,且逐组递增,组间两两比较差异均有显著性意义(P<0.05);风险组、髋关节半脱位组前凸指数较正常组明显增加,两两比较差异有显著性意义(P<0.05),髋关节全脱位组较正常组存在升高趋势;髋关节半脱位组、髋关节全脱位组弓顶距较正常组明显增加,差异有显著性意义(P<0.05),且存在逐级递增趋势;各组间骶骨倾斜角两两比较差异无显著性意义;③提示脑性瘫痪患儿腰椎发育与骨盆髋关节发育有密切关联,尤以腰椎前凸畸形和髋关节脱位畸形的关系最明显。

目的:研究川芎嗪通过核转录因子E2相关因子2(Nrf2)/血红素加氧酶1(HO-1)通路抑制脊髓损伤大鼠氧化应激损伤的作用机制。方法:雌性SD大鼠60只,随机分为假手术组,模型组,川芎嗪高、中、低剂量组。假手术组大鼠切除椎板后,不进行脊髓打击,每日予腹腔注射等量0.9%氯化钠溶液;模型组大鼠切除椎板后,打击脊髓制备脊髓损伤模型,术后每日给予腹腔注射0.9%氯化钠溶液;川芎嗪组大鼠切除椎板后,打击脊髓制备脊髓损伤模型,术后每日给予川芎嗪腹腔注射。评估大鼠造模前、造模后1、3、7、14、21、28天BBB后肢运动功能评分,尼氏染色观察脊髓神经元形态,ELISA检测超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、丙二醛(MDA)表达水平,Western Blot检测Nrf2、HO-1表达水平,q RT-PCR检测Nrf2、HO-1 mRNA表达水平,免疫组化法检测Keap1、P62表达水平,荧光染色检测活性氧(ROS)的表达量。结果:造模后14、21、28天各剂量川芎嗪组大鼠BBB评分高于模型组(P<0.05)。尼氏染色结果显示:假手术组脊髓灰质内可见均匀分布的深蓝色斑块状或颗粒状尼氏体;模型组脊髓组织灰质及白质区域见尼氏体解体、减少;各剂量川芎嗪组脊髓组织内可见少量存活的斑块状尼氏体。ELISA检测显示:各剂量川芎嗪组大鼠MDA表达低于模型组(P<0.01);SOD表达量高于模型组(P<0.01)。Western Blot结果显示:川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织Nrf2、HO-1蛋白表达量高于模型组(P<0.01,P<0.05)和假手术组(P<0.05)。qRT-PCR结果显示:川芎嗪组大鼠脊髓组织Nrf2、HO-1 mRNA表达量高于模型组和假手术组(P<0.01,P<0.05)。免疫组化染色结果显示:川芎嗪组Keap1表达显著低于模型组和假手术组(P<0.05),P62表达显著高于模型组与假手术组(P<0.05)。ROS荧光染色结果显示:川芎嗪组ROS荧光强度低于模型组(P<0.01),高于假手术组(P<0.01)。结论:川芎嗪能够通过NRF2/HO-1信号通路调控抗氧化作用发挥神经保护作用。

背景:舒筋健脑方是北京中医药大学东直门医院治疗脑瘫的经验方剂,临床疗效明确,但具体作用机制有待阐明。目的:探讨舒筋健脑方治疗脑性瘫痪的可能作用机制。方法:64只7 d龄SD大鼠幼鼠随机分为正常组12只和造模组52只。造模组幼鼠采用Rice-Vannucci法建立模型,造模成功的52只幼鼠随机分为模型组12只、米诺环素组及舒筋健脑方低、中、高剂量组各10只。米诺环素组大鼠给予40 mg/(kg•d)盐酸米诺环素灌胃;舒筋健脑方低、中、高剂量组分别给予舒筋健脑方颗粒4,8,16 g/(kg•d)灌胃;正常组及模型组给予等剂量生理盐水灌胃。各组每日灌胃1次,连续干预1周。各组大鼠采用悬吊实验、不自主动作评分、Bederson评分进行行为学评价;苏木精-伊红染色观察大脑皮质组织病理改变;Elisa法检测大脑皮质组织炎症相关因子水平;免疫组化检测大脑皮质组织酪氨酸激酶2(Janus kinase 2,JAK2)、磷酸化酪氨酸激酶2(Phosphorylated janus kinase 2,p-JAK2)及磷酸化信号转导子和转录激活子3(Phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3,p-STAT3)阳性表达;Western blot检测JAK2、p-JAK2、p-STAT3蛋白表达水平。结果与结论:①与正常组比较,模型组大鼠悬吊实验得分、不自主动作得分降低(P<0.01或P<0.05);神经细胞结构破坏,大量空泡形成,细胞肿胀,细胞间隙增大;大脑皮质组织肿瘤坏死因子α、白细胞介素1β水平显著升高(P<0.01),白细胞介素10水平降低(P<0.05);大脑皮质组织JAK2、p-JAK2、p-STAT3蛋白表达显著升高(P<0.01)。②与模型组比较,米诺环素组及舒筋健脑方各剂量组大鼠行为学指标改善(P<0.01或P<0.05);缺血缺氧性病理改变减轻,仅有少量神经细胞坏死及少量空泡形成,细胞间隙减小;大脑皮质组织肿瘤坏死因子α、白细胞介素1β水平降低(P<0.05);大脑皮质组织JAK2、p-JAK2、p-STAT3蛋白表达显著降低(P<0.01);舒筋健脑方高剂量各指标改善最明显。③结果说明,舒筋健脑方能够抑制缺血缺氧脑损伤模型大鼠大脑皮质组织炎症反应,其作用机制可能与调节JAK2/STAT3信号通路有关。

Short-and Long-Term Response of Phytoplankton to ENSO in Prydz Bay, Antarctica: Evidences from Field Measurements, Remote Sensing Data and Stratigraphic Biomarker Records

The study provides one of the first lines of evidence showing linkages between Antarctic phytoplankton abundance and composition in response to ENSO, based on historical reconstruction of sediment biomarkers. In addition to sediment biomarkers, field measured and remote sensing data of phytoplankton abundance were also recorded from Prydz Bay, Eastern Antarctica. Community structure of field measured phytoplankton showed significant El Nino/La Nina-related succession during 1990 to 2002. In general, the number of algae species decreased during El Nino and La Nina years compared to normal years. Austral summer monthly variation of remotely sensed chlorophyll-a(Chl-a), particulate organic carbon(POC), and sea surface temperature(SST) indicated that ENSO impacted the timing of phytoplankton blooms during 2007 to 2011. Phytoplankton blooms(indicated by Chl-a and POC) preceded the increases in SST during El Nino years, and lagged behind the SST increases during La Nina years. Stratigraphic record of marine sedimentary lipid(brassicasterol, dinosterol and alkenones) biomarkers inferred that the proportions of different algae(diatoms, dinoflagellates and haptophytes) changed significantly between El Nino and La Nina events. The relative proportion of diatoms increased, with that of dinoflagellates being decreased during El Nino years, while it was reversed during La Nina years.

Phytoplankton and chlorophyll a relationships with ENSO in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica

The historical data of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a(Chl a)(1990–2002)obtained during the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE)in the Prydz Bay have been integrated.The results showed that the temperature,salinity,nutrients,and oxygen of seawater changed when El Nino/La Nina occurred.The variation of biological communities reflected the response of ecosystem to environmental changes.During El Ni?o period,Chl a concentration and phytoplankton community structure changed significantly,and the relative proportion of diatoms increased while dinoflagellates decreased.During La Ni?a period,the proportion of diatoms decreased,but the golden-brown algae and blue-green algae increased significantly.The variation of phytoplankton population directly affected the biodiversity of the bay,which were also quite sensitive to the marine environment changes.Meanwhile,the satellite remote sensing data of 2002–2011(December–March)have been used to study the temporal connection change of Chl a and phytoplankton in the Prydz Bay.We found that there were significant differences in the monthly variation characteristics of satellite remote sensing Chl a and sea surface temperature(SST),which had some links with sea ice melting and El Ni?o/La Ni?a events.We found that the start time of bloom advanced,lagged or synchronized with the changes of the SST,and we also found the occurrence time of phytoplankton bloom corresponded with the sea ice melting inner bay.To some extent,this study will help us understand the relationships between ENSO events and the phytoplankton bloom in the Southern Ocean.

The distribution and concentration of particulate biogenic silica in surface waters of Prydz Bay, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 2011

The concentrations and distributions of particulate biogenic silica （PBSi） in the upper surface waters of Prydz Bay, Antarctica, were investigated during the 27th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition cruises of January 2011. We aimed to characterize the correlations between PBSi and plankton, nutrients and particulate organic carbon. The results showed that the concentrations of biogenic silica ranged from 0.76--19.72 ktmol-dm3 and the average concentration of biogenic silica was 6.06 mol.dm3. The distribution of surface PBSi had significant regional characteristics： The concentrations were higher south of 67S than to the north. The distribution of PBSi, chlorophyll a and particulate organic carbon showed similar patterns, and PBSi distribution had a negative correlation with that of silicate. In the vertical direction, the mole ratio of PBSi and POC （Si/Co） decreased with increasing depth. This trend indicated a higher rate of PBSi dissolution, or a lower rate of organic matter reminer- alization rate, in the upper 200 m.

The content and distribution of Ge in the sediments of Prydz Bay, Antarctica

The content and distribution of Ge is investigated in sediments from the Southern Ocean （Prydz Bay, Antarctica）. The content of Getotal in the sediments ranges from 1.14× 10^-6 to 2.35 × 10^-6 （average of 1.71 × 10^-6） and the highest value occurs at station P3-9 where water depth is 〉 1 000 m. The lowest value occurs at station P4-13 which is near the edge of the Amery ice shelf. The surface sediments have 16%-68% Gebio within Getota~. The distribution trends of Gebio and Getotal are generally similar, and the val- ues outside Prydz Bay are higher than within the bay, bounded at 67°S. The vertical distribution of Ge in sediment cores presents higher values at the surface than in underlying sediments. Values of Gebio appear to positively correlate with biogenic silica （BSiO2） in surface sediments from non-polynyas sea. The vertical distribution of Gebio and BSiO2 is similar in sediments of station P3-16.
