neuroendocrine(nE)differentiation of cancer and deregulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system(UPS)are two processes that have been independently linked to the development of aggressive and treatment-resistant tumors.Striking data suggest a plausible interconnection between these two mechanisms,based on indirect evidence of neuropeptide-induced effects on UPS,reversed by proteasome inhibition and deubiquitinaselike properties of nE markers.Deciphering the model of their exact interactions is one of the keys to targeting the nE malignant phenotype more effectively.

Spectral splitting is an approach to the design of hybrid photovoltaic-thermal(PVT)collectors that promises significant performance benefits.However,the ultimate efficiency limits,optimal PV cell materials and optical filters of spectral-splitting PVT(SSPVT)collectors remain unclear,with a lack of consensus in the literature.We develop an idealized model of SSPVT collectors and use this to determine their electrical and thermal efficiency limits,and to uncover how these limits can be approached through the selection of optimal PV cell materials and spectral-splitting filters.Assuming that thermal losses can be minimized,the efficiency limit,optimal PV material and optimal filter all depend strongly on a coefficient w,which quantifies the value of the delivered thermal energy relative to that of the generated electricity.The total(electrical plus thermal)efficiency limit of SSPVT collectors increases at higher w and at higher optical concentrations.The optimal spectral-splitting filter is defined by sharp lower-and upper-bound energies;the former always coincides with the bandgap of the cell,whereas the latter decreases at higher w.The total effective efficiency limit of SSPVT collectors is over 20%higher than those of either standalone PV modules or standalone ST collectors when w is in the range from 0.35 to 0.50 and up to 30%higher at w~0.4.This study provides a method for identifying the efficiency limits of ideal SSPVT collectors and reports these limits,along with guidance for selecting optimal PV materials and spectral-splitting filters under different conditions and in different applications.

Helicobacter pylori infection(Hp-I)represents a typical microbial agent intervening in the complex mechanisms of gastric homeostasis by disturbing the balance between the host gastric microbiota and mucosa-related factors,leading to inflammatory changes,dysbiosis and eventually gastric cancer.The normal gastric microbiota shows diversity,with Proteobacteria[Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)belongs to this family],Firmicutes,Actinobacteria,Bacteroides and Fusobacteria being the most abundant phyla.Most studies indicate that H.pylori has inhibitory effects on the colonization of other bacteria,harboring a lower diversity of them in the stomach.When comparing the healthy with the diseased stomach,there is a change in the composition of the gastric microbiome with increasing abundance of H.pylori(where present)in the gastritis stage,while as the gastric carcinogenesis cascade progresses to gastric cancer,the oral and intestinal-type pathogenic microbial strains predominate.Hp-I creates a premalignant environment of atrophy and intestinal metaplasia and the subsequent alteration in gastric microbiota seems to play a crucial role in gastric tumorigenesis itself.Successful H.pylori eradication is suggested to restore gastric microbiota,at least in primary stages.It is more than clear that Hp-I,gastric microbiota and gastric cancer constitute a challenging tangle and the strong interaction between them makes it difficult to unroll.Future studies are considered of crucial importance to test the complex interaction on the modulation of the gastric microbiota by H.pylori as well as on the relationships between the gastric microbiota and gastric carcinogenesis.

The role of insects in animal nutrition has been reconsidered during recent years,paving the way for an increasing market for edible insects.Their protein and amino acid balance make them a promising source of protein for replacing high value proteins.Yellow mealworm,Tenebrio molitor L.(TM;Coleoptera:Tenebrionidae)larvae,have shown positive effects on broiler performance in several research studies and have a strong potential as a sustainable alternative protein source for monogastric animals.This study aimed to assess the effect of replacing various ratios of basal diets with T.molitor larvae on broiler performance as well as on several meat and welfare characteristics.For the study,120 one-day-old male chicks(Ross 308)were randomly allocated in 3 treatments and 4 replications(10 birds per pen).Birds of the control group(basal diet)were fed with typical commercial maize and soymeal-based rations in mash form.The other 2 groups were treated with the same diet,after replacing 5%and 10%with dried TM larvae,respectively.On d 35(end of trial),meat samples were collected and analysed.Body weight,feed intake,body weight gain and feed conversion ratio during the periods of 1 to 10 d(starter period),11 to 24 d(grower period),25 to 35 d(finisher period)and 1 to 35 d(total period)were assessed.Podo-dermatitis,diarrhoea,feather score and litter conditions were also assessed during the trial.The results indicated that TM larvae inclusion in the broilers'diet positively affected body weight gain values,as well as the carcass yield,the meat composition and various welfare traits.Additionally,the dietary treatments with TM larvae favourably affected meat composition and colour parameters,whereas there were also some positive effects on lipid and protein oxidation.Saturated fatty acids were decreased by the dietary supplementation whereas the polyunsaturated fatty acids to SFA ratio increased.In general,the study showed that whole TM larvae addition can provide a promising alternative to soybean meal in the diet of broilers,demo

Lyophilized recombinant brain natriuretic peptide(BnP)is an exogenous peptide synthesized by artificial recombination technology,with a similar structure and similar physiological effects with the endogenous natriuretic peptide secreted by the human body.It’s main mechanism of action is to increase cyclic guanosine monophosphate by binding with its corresponding receptor in the body,regulating,thus,the imbalance of the vascular system and cardiac hemodynamics,improving the heart’s pumping capacity,and inhibiting sympathetic excitability and myocardial remodeling.Moreover,it can promote mitochondrial metabolism and enhance the use of adenosine triphosphate in cardiomyocytes.In the present study,102 chronic heart failure(HF)patients were randomly assigned to a control and an observation group consisting of 51 patients each.Patients of the control group were treated with standard HF therapy for 3 d including oral metoprolol tartrate tablets,spironolactone,and olmesartanate while patients of the observation group were administered the recombinant human BnP injection for the same time-period,plus the standard HF therapy.The recombinant human BnP group(observation group)demonstrated better physical,emotional,social,and economic scores,as well as cardiac and inflammatory biomarkers such as serum hypersensitive C-reactive protein,n-terminal pro BnP and troponin I levels,compared to the control group.Moreover,cardiac function was also improved,as left ventricular ejection fraction and stroke volume were significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group.Interestingly,adverse reactions were not different between the 2 groups.However,these results are not generalizable and the need of large multicenter randomized controlled trials examining the safety and efficacy of recombinant human BnP in HF patients is of major importance.

A novel Mg-based bimetal reagent(Mg/Cu)was used as an enhanced reductive system to degrade insensitivemunition 2,4-dinitroanisole(DnAn),a contaminant found in energeticladenwaste.Degradation ofDnAnwas significantly impacted by dissolved oxygen and studied in anoxic and oxic bimetal systems(i.e.,purging with n2,air,or O_(2) gas).Degradation occurred through sequential nitroreduction:first one nitro group was reduced(ortho or para)to form short-lived intermediates 2-amino-4-nitroanisole or 4-amino-2-nitroanisole(2-AnAn or 4-AnAn),and then subsequent reduction of the other nitro group formed 2,4-diaminoanisole(DAAn).The nitro-amino intermediates demonstrated regioselective reduction in the ortho position to 2-AnAn;Regioselectivity was also impacted by the anoxic/oxic environment.Under O_(2)-purging DnAn degradation rate was slightly enhanced,but most notably O_(2) significantly accelerated DAAn generation.DAAn also further degraded only in the oxygenated Mg/Cu system.Adsorption of DnAn byproducts to the reagent occurred regardless of anoxic/oxic condition,resulting in a partition of carbon mass between the adsorbed phase(27%-35%)and dissolved phase(59%-72%).Additional surface techniqueswere applied to investigate contaminant interaction with Cu.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations identified preferential adsorption structures for DnAn on Cu with binding through two O atoms of one or both nitro groups.X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)measurements determined the oxidation state of catalyticmetal Cu and formation of a Cu-O-n bond during treatment.Laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry(LDI-MS)measurements also identified intermediate 2-AnAn adsorbed to the bimetal surface.

Controlling neuronal activity using implantable neural interfaces constitutes an important tool to understand and develop novel strategies against brain diseases.Infrared neurostimulation is a promising alternative to optogenetics for controlling the neuronal circuitry with high spatial resolution.However,bi-directional interfaces capable of simultaneously delivering infrared light and recording electrical signals from the brain with minimal inflammation have not yet been reported.Here,we have developed a soft fibre-based device using high-performance polymers which are>100-fold softer than conventional silica glass used in standard optical fibres.The developed implant is capable of stimulating the brain activity in localized cortical domains by delivering laser pulses in the 2μm spectral region while recording electrophysiological signals.Action and local field potentials were recorded in vivo from the motor cortex and hippocampus in acute and chronic settings,respectively.Immunohistochemical analysis of the brain tissue indicated insignificant inflammatory response to the infrared pulses while the signal-to-noise ratio of recordings still remained high.Our neural interface constitutes a step forward in expanding infrared neurostimulation as a versatile approach for fundamental research and clinically translatable therapies.

AIM:To assess the hepatitis B virus(HBV)-DnA and the prevalence of occult HBV infection in end-stage renal failure(ESRF)patients from Central Greece. METHODS:Sera from 366 ESRF patients attending five out of six dialysis units from Central Greece were investigated for HBV-DnA by real-time polymerase chain reaction.Only serum samples with repeatedly detectable HBV-DnA were considered positive.IgG antibodies to hepatitis C virus(anti-HCV)were tested by a third generation enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),while IgG antibodies to hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV)were tested by two commercially available ELISAs.RESULTS:HBV-DnA was detected in 15/366 patient (4.1%)and HBsAg in 20/366(5.5%).The prevalenc of occult HBV infection was 0.9%(3/346 HBsAg negative patients).Occult HBV was not associate with a specific marker of HBV infection or anti-HCV o anti-HEV reactivity.There was no significant differenc in HBV-DnA titres,demographic and biochemica features,between patients with occult HBV infectio and those with HBsAg-positive chronic HBV infection. COnCLUSIOn:In central Greece,4%of ESRF patient had detectable HBV-DnA,though in this setting,th prevalence of occult HBV seems to be very low(0.9%).

Thermal Energy Storage Contribution to the Economic Dispatch of Island Power Systems

In this paper the provision of flexible generation is investigated by extracting steam from Rankine-cycle power stations during off-peak demand in order to charge thermal tanks that contain suitable phase-change materials(PCMs);at a later time when this is required and/or is economically effective,these thermal energy storage(TES)tanks can act as the heat sources of secondary thermal power plants in order to generate power,for example as evaporators of,e.g.,organic Rankine cycle(ORC)plants that are suitable for power generation at reduced temperatures and smaller scales.This type of solution offers greater flexibility than TES-only technologies that store thermal energy and release it back to the base power station,since it allows both derating but also over-generation compared to the base power-station capacity.The solution is applied in a case study of a 50-MW rated oil-fired power station unit at the autonomous system of Crete.The optimal operation of the TES system is investigated,by solving a modified Unit Commitment-Economic Dispatch optimization problem,which includes the TES operating constraints.The results indicate that for most of the scenarios the discounted payback period is lower than 12 years,while in few cases the payback period is 5 years.
