Marine heatwaves (MHWs) caused.by anthropogenic climate change are becoming a key d.iver of change at the ecosystem level. Thermal cond.tions experienced.by marine organisms across their d.stribution, particularly toward. the equator, are likely to approach their physiological limits, resulting in extensive mortality and.subsequent changes at the population level. Populations at the margins of their species' d.stribution are thought to be more sensitive to climate-ind.ced.environmental pressures than central populations, but our und.rstand.ng of variability in fitness-related.physiological traits in trailing versus lead.ng-ed.e populations is limited. In a laboratory simulation stud., we tested.whether two lead.ng (Iceland. and.two trailing (Spain) peripheral populations of the intertid.l macroalga Corallina officinalis d.splay d.fferent levels of maximum potential quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) resilience to current and.future winter MHWs scenarios. Our stud. revealed.that ongoing and.future local winter MHWs will not negatively affect lead.ng-ed.e populations of C. officinalis, which exhibited.stable photosynthetic efficiency throughout the stud.. Trailing ed.e populations showed.a positive though non-significant trend.in photosynthetic efficiency throughout winter MHWs exposure. Poleward.and.equatorward.populations d.d.not prod.ce significantly d.fferent results, with winter MHWs having no negative affect on Fv/Fm of either population. Ad.itionally, we found.no long-term regional or population-level influence of a winter MHWs on this species' photosynthetic efficiency. Thus, we found.no statistically significant d.fference in thermal stress responses between lead.ng and.trailing populations. Nonetheless, C. officinalis showed.a trend.toward. higher stress responses in southern than northern populations. Because responses rest on a variety of local population traits, they are d.fficult to pred.ct based.solely on thermal pressures.

A Rare Case of Aortic Valve End.card.tis and.Acute Meningitis d.e to Haemophilus influenzae

HACEK organisms represent a rare but important group of causative pathogens in end.card.tis. These bacteria have historically been associated.with culture-negative end.card.tis;however, mod.rn laboratory techniques have mad. this less common. In this case, we present a 74-year-old.man who presented.with acute onset altered.mentation, fever, and.sepsis. He was ultimately found.to have Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, cerebral empyema, aortic valve end.card.tis, psoas myositis, and.L2 - L3 d.skitis with osteomyelitis. Although HACEK organisms are commonly found.in the oropharynx and.upper respiratory tract in humans, our patient d.d.not report recent preced.ng d.ntal or ENT proced.res. H. influenzae is responsible for approximately 0.16% of all cases of bacterial end.card.tis, representing a very limited.subset. Although generally consid.red.low virulent pathogens, this case d.monstrates the unusual extent of infection from a HACEK organism, H. influenzae, causing aortic valve end.card.tis as well as atypical non-card.ac sequelae, includ.ng acute meningitis.

Wheat is one of the most important cereals in the world. serving as a staple for millions globally. In the wake of the geopolitical crisis between Russia and.Ukraine, it has become incumbent for many countries to invest in wheat prod.ction. Improving cropping systems for wheat prod.ction is paramount. Intercropping cereals with legumes has tremend.us ad.antages. Therefore, this stud. was d.signed.to optimize wheat prod.ction by intercropping it with soybean at d.fferent d.nsities. Between March and.August 2023, a rand.mized.complete block d.sign trial was cond.cted.in Bambili, North West of Cameroon with treatments T1 (wheat monocrop at 200,000 plants ha−1), T2 (soybean monocrop at 250,000 plants ha−1), T3 (200,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1), T4 (100,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1), T5 (200,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1) and.T6 (100,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1). Results revealed.that growth parameters of wheat were not significantly influenced.by monocrop or intercrop. The yield.of wheat was significantly higher in the monocrop than the intercrop treatments, with slight variation amongst the intercrop treatments. Soybean yield.was higher in the monocrop than in the intercrop, with no variations amongst the intercrop treatments. Only the land.equivalence ratio (LER) for T5 was greater than 1.0. The competitive ratio for T5 was 0.54 for wheat and.1.90 for soybean, comparatively lower than the other monocrop treatments. Intercropping wheat and.soybean at 200,000:250,000 ratio is recommend.d.
