While incinera.ion reduces the volume a.d qua.tity of wa.te for fina. disposa., it lea.s to the production of fly a.d bottom a.hes la.en with toxic incomplete combustion products such a. Polycyclic a.oma.ic Hydroca.bons (Pa.s), dioxins, fura.s a.d hea.y meta.s. This exposes workers who ha.dle a.d dispose the bottom a.hes, hospita. pa.ients, the genera. public a.d environment. The goa. of this study wa. to determine the tota. a.d individua. levels of 16 most preva.ent a.d toxic Pa.s. Bottom a.h sa.ples were collected from incinera.ors in five county hospita.s in Kenya. na.ely;Moi-Voi, Na.ok, Kita.e, Ma.indu a.d Isiolo. Bottom a.h sa.ples were collected over a.period of six months from the five hospita.s. The sa.ples were then sieved, homogenised a.d stored a. 4°C in a.ber coloured gla.s conta.ners. The Pa.s were extra.ted using 30 ml of a.hexa.e-a.etone solvent (1:1) mixture by ultra.onica.ion a. room tempera.ure (23°C) for 45 minutes. The Pa.s were then a.a.yzed with a.GC-MS spectrophotometer model (Shima.zu GCMS-QP2010 SE) connected to a.computer work sta.ion wa. used for the Pa.s a.a.ysis. The GC-MS wa. equipped with a. SGE BPX5 GC ca.illa.y column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm) for the sepa.a.ion of compounds. Helium wa. used a. the ca.rier ga. a. a.flow ra.e of 15.5 ml/minute a.d 14.5 psi. 1 μl of the sa.ple wa. injected a. 280°C, split mode (10:1).
