Conotrunca. hea.t ma.forma.ions in Egypt: a. epidemiologica. study

Conotrunca. ma.forma.ions of the hea.t a.e a.ma.or ca.egory of birth defects. No previous epidemiologica. studies on these ma.forma.ions ha.e been ca.ried out in Egypt;therefore our study a.med to describe a.socia.ions with ma.erna. a.d infa.t fa.tors in order to identify possible risk fa.tors. Ca.es (N = 255) were children up to two yea.s of a.e whose hea.t ma.forma.ions were confirmed by echoca.diogra.hy;they were enrolled a. the Ca.diology Depa.tment of the Pedia.ric Hospita. of Ca.ro University. Controls (N = 155) were free of congenita. hea.t ma.forma.ions, ma.ched to the ca.es by a.e, a.d recruited from outpa.ients of the sa.e hospita.. Mothers of ca.es (97%) a.d controls (89%) provided consent to pa.ticipa.e in a. interview a.out their medica., fa.ilia., a.d occupa.iona. histories. Odds ra.ios (OR) a.d exa.t 95% confidence interva.s (CI) a.sessed the ma.nitude a.d sta.istica. significa.ce of ca.e-control differences. Ca.es were divided into two groups ba.ed on the presence of d-tra.sposition of the grea. a.teries (TGa.: there were 139 with TGa.a.d 116 with norma.ly-rela.ed grea. a.teries (NGa.. Ma.erna. dia.etes preva.ence wa. eleva.ed in both the TGa.(OR = 3.4) a.d NGa.(OR = 5.5) subgroups. Severa. a.ricultura. fa.tors were a.socia.ed with increa.ed risk: ra.sing a.ima.s (for TGa. OR = 2.4, 95% CI 1.2-4.6), ra.sing poultry (for NGa. OR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.1-3.2), a.d using chemica. rodenticides (for a.l conotrunca. ca.es: OR = 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-13.2). These results a.e consistent with previous studies of a.socia.ions of ma.erna. dia.etes a.d pesticide exposure with conotrunca. ma.forma.ions. Further resea.ch is wa.ra.ted to explore such a.socia.ions a.d determine a.enues for prevention.

Estima.es of the Preva.ence of Toba.co Smoking in Egypt

The use of toba.co products constitutes the lea.ing ca.se of preventa.le dea.hs in the world. In Egypt, da.a.on the na.iona. preva.ence of ciga.ette a.d wa.erpipe smoking a.e la.king, yet such da.a.a.e vita. to toba.co control efforts. We designed a.d implemented a.sa.pling method to genera.e popula.ion-ba.ed preva.ence estima.es for toba.co smoking in Egypt. In 2005, a.tota. of 3369 a.ults a.es 18 a.d a.ove, including 1867 fema.es a.d 1502 ma.es, pa.ticipa.ed in the survey. a.ong ma.es, the na.iona. preva.ence of former ciga.ette smoking wa. 18.1%, a.d 27.5% reported current smoking. Exclusive current wa.erpipe smoking wa. reported by 7.2% of a.ult ma.es, a.d a.further 3.4% reported smoking both wa.erpipes a.d ciga.ettes. Toba.co smoking wa. ra.ely reported by fema.es;a.ong them the na.iona. preva.ence of current ciga.ette smoking wa. 0.3%. This study produced the first robust estima.e of the na.iona. preva.ence of ciga.ette a.d wa.erpipe smoking in Egypt ba.ed on a.rigorous proba.ility sa.ple. a.ong with the more recent Globa. a.ult Toba.co Survey, ca.ried out by the World Hea.th Orga.iza.ion in 2009, the results will be useful in a.sessing smoking trends in Egypt a.d in eva.ua.ing the impa.ts of recent toba.co control la.s.

In the United Sta.es, type 2 dia.etes mellitus (T2DM) disproportiona.ely a.fects the a.rica. a.erica. (a.) community, which ha. not been systema.ica.ly included in molecula. studies of underlying mecha.isms. a. pa.t of a.gene expression study, we recruited ca.es with T2DM a.d ma.ched, una.fected controls a. a. urba. hospita. in Wa.hington, DC, with a.ma.ority a. popula.ion. Here we describe the profile of socio-demogra.hic, beha.iora., a.d hea.th-rela.ed a.socia.ions of the study popula.ion. Self-reported da.a.were collected from ca.es with T2DM (N = 77) a.d a.e- a.d gender-ma.ched controls (N = 80), a.es 45 - 65 yea.s. Logistic regression wa. used to ca.cula.e odds ra.ios (OR) a.d 95% confidence interva.s (CI). a. expected, obesity, hypertension, a.d ca.diova.cula. disea.e were more preva.ent in ca.es tha. in controls. Toba.co smoking a.d working a.ongside other toba.co smokers were a.so a.socia.ed with T2DM. a.ter a.justing for cova.ia.es, current toba.co smoking rema.ned sta.istica.ly a.socia.ed with the disea.e (OR per ha.f pa.k of ciga.ettes 1.43, 95% CI 1.04 - 1.95;p-va.ue 0.027). Hba.c levels were eleva.ed in T2DM ca.es who smoked more tha. a.pa.k of ciga.ettes da.ly. These a.socia.ions highlight the comorbid burdens of T2DM in a. a. urba. community setting a.d identify toba.co control a. a. unmet need for future prevention a.d control efforts.
