Trends in ophthalmology journals： a five-year bibliometric analysis （2009-2013）

AIM： To explore the trends in the ophthalmic literature over a 5-year period in relation to country, research expenditure and demographics. METHODS： Articles published between 2009 and 2013 by the 20 highest-contributing countries in the 20 top- ranked ophthalmology journals were identified by their country of affiliation. The number of articles published and mean impact factor were measured per country for each year and trends explored using regression analysis with 5-year and 10-year forecasts calculated. Data on research expenditure was collected and tested for correlation with the number of articles and mean impact factor. RESULTS： The analysis included 19 338 articles. The USA, UK and Europe accounted for 60.2% of articles published, with the USA contributing 7388 articles （34.0%）. The USA also demonstrated the highest mean impact factor （3.5）. Research expenditure was significantly correlated with both research output （r=0,86, P〈0.001） and scholarly impact （r=0.42, P〈0.001）. china （P〈0.01）, Korea （P〈0.01） and India （P〈0.02） demonstrated a significant growth in research output over the study period. The research contribution of these three countries combined is forecasted to overtake that of Europe within ten years, with china expected to be the second-largest contributor within five years. These countries were also among those demonstrating the greatest growth in research expenditure. cONcLUSION： While the USA and European countries are major contributors of ophthalmic research, the productivity of some Asian countries is growing impressively. The contribution of china, Korea and Indiais forecasted to outweigh that of Europe by 2023. Research expenditure is highly correlated with research productivity and these trends reflect the differing economic priorities across the world.

Petroleum production in the Rio del Rey Basin,which is an extension of the Niger Delta of Nigeria into cameroon,has been limited to the Tertiary offshore portion since the late *** to dedlining reserves in this offshore portion,the onshore cretaceous portion of the basin attracted significant attention in the last *** the present *** from outcrops in the onshore portion of the basin were analyzed to evaluate their potential as source rocks,assess hydrocarbon generation,and highlight their signifcance for *** observations,total organic carbon(TOc)measure-ments,and Rock Eval pyrolysis were used to generate data for these ***-eval S2 values(0.42-3 mg Hc/g rock)based on measured present-day TOc values(0.58-2.44 wtx)of the shales studied signify poor to fair source rock potentials,whereas calculated S2 values(1.74-8.19 mg Hc/g rock)based on estimated original TOc values(0.67-2.87 wt%)produced fair to good source rocks containing Type Ⅱ/Ⅲ kerogen,which were transformed by maturity to the present-day Type Ⅲ/Ⅳ *** of the samples based on Tmax values varying between 439 and 471℃are equivalent to maturity values ranging between 0.74% R_(r) and 1.32% R_(r), and these represent the peak oil to condensate/wet gas zones of hy-drocarbon *** results demonstrate that mature source rocks are present in the onshore part of the Rio del Rey Basin,and thus,it is suitable for petroleum exploration.

The cOVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-coV-2 virus is an ongoing global health *** cases of cOVID-19 and the rare cases of cOVID-19 vaccine-induced-thrombotic-thrombocytopenia(VITT)are both associated with thrombosis and thrombocytopenia;however,the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately *** infection and vaccination utilize the spike protein receptor-binding domain(RBD)of *** found that intravenous injection of recombinant RBD caused significant platelet clearance in *** investigation revealed the RBD could bind platelets,cause platelet activation,and potentiate platelet aggregation,which was exacerbated in the Delta and Kappa *** RBD–platelet interaction was partially dependent on theβ3 integrin as binding was significantly reduced inβ3−/−***,RBD binding to human and mouse platelets was significantly reduced with relatedαIIbβ3 antagonists and mutation of the RGD(arginine-glycine-aspartate)integrin binding motif to RGE(arginine-glycine-glutamate).We developed anti-RBD polyclonal and several monoclonal antibodies(mAbs)and identified 4F2 and 4H12 for their potent dual inhibition of RBD-induced platelet activation,aggregation,and clearance in vivo,and SARS-coV-2 infection and replication in Vero E6 *** data show that the RBD can bind platelets partially thoughαIIbβ3 and induce platelet activation and clearance,which may contribute to thrombosis and thrombocytopenia observed in cOVID-19 and *** newly developed mAbs 4F2 and 4H12 have potential not only for diagnosis of SARS-coV-2 virus antigen but also importantly for therapy against cOVID-19.

Arsenic(As)is a known carcinogen and naturally occurring semi-metal in soils and in the Earth's *** of soils and water with As poses a serious threat to millions of people worldwide due to its health hazards and toxicological ***,devising novel and efficient methods for remediation of contaminated areas has attracted a great deal of interest across the *** this study,we investigated the usefulness of synthetic birnessite,goethite,hexadecylpyridinium chloride-modified montmorillonite(HDPc-M),hexadecylpyridinium bromide-modified zeolite(HDPB-Z),and lanthanum(La)-doped magnetic biochar produced from eucalyptus bark(La-Euchar)as adsorbents at 10%dosage for As stabilization in a soil spiked with 1000 mg kg^(-1)*** effectiveness of the above adsorbents in As immobilization in soil was assessed using single-step extractions with 2 mol L^(-1)HNO_(3)and deionized water,the simplified bioaccessibility extraction test(SBET)method,and sequential extraction with the modified community Bureau of Reference(BcR)*** of the adsorbents shifted the exchangeable fraction of As to more recalcitrant fractions and dramatically reduced the exchangeable fraction by 6%-99%and the extractable amounts with HNO_(3),deionized water,and SBET method by 30%-92%,17%-95%,and 12%-90%,respectively,compared to the unamended *** immobilizing effects of adsorbents on As decreased in the sequence of birnessite>La-Euchar>goethite>HDPB-Z>*** exhibited great affinity for As and drastically reduced As extractability by more than 90%in all single *** results revealed that HDPc-M,HDPB-Z,La-Euchar,birnessite,and goethite are promising immobilizing agents for in situ stabilization of As in terrestrial environments.

Selective androgen receptor modulators for the treatment of late onset male hypogonadism

Several testosterone preparations are used in the treatment of hypogonadism in the ageing male. These therapies differ in their convenience, flexibility, regional availability and expense but share their pharmacokinetic basis of approval and dearth of long-term safety data. The brevity and relatively reduced cost of pharmacokinetic based registration trials provides little commercial incentive to develop improved novel therapies for the treatment of late onset male hypogonadism. Selective androgen receptor modulators （SARMs） have been shown to provide anabolic benefit in the absence of androgenic effects on prostate, hair and skin. current clinical development for SARMs is focused on acute muscle wasting conditions with defined clinical endpoints of physical function and lean body mass. Similar regulatory clarity concerning clinical deficits in men with hypogonadism is required before the beneficial pharmacology and desirable pharmacokinetics of SARMs can be employed in the treatment of late onset male hypogonadism.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis(EPS) is a debilitating condition characterized by a fibrocollagenous membrane encasing the small intestine, resulting in recurrent small bowel obstructions. EPS is most commonly associated with long-term peritoneal dialysis, though medications, peritoneal infection, and systemic inflammatory disorders have been implicated. Many cases remain idiopathic. Diagnosis is often delayed given the rarity of the disorder combined with non-specific symptoms and laboratory findings. Although cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography of the abdomen can be suggestive of the disorder, many patients undergo exploratory laparotomy for diagnosis. Mortality approaches 50% one year after diagnosis. Treatment for EPS involves treating the underlying condition or eliminating possible inciting agents(i.e. peritoneal dialysis, medications, infections) and nutritional support, frequently with total parenteral nutrition. EPSspecific treatment depends on the disease stage. In the inflammatory stage, corticosteroids are the treatment of choice, while in the fibrotic stage, tamoxifen may be beneficial. In practice, distinguishing between stages may be difficult and both may be used. Surgical intervention, consisting of peritonectomy and enterolysis, is timeconsuming and high-risk and is reserved for situations in which conservative medical therapy fails in institutions with surgical expertise in this area. Herein we review the available literature of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this rare, but potentially devastating disease.

InterStoreDB:A Generic Integration Resource for Genetic and Genomic Data

Associating phenotypic traits and quantitative trait loci （QTL） to causative regions of the underlying genome is a key goal in agricultural research. InterStoreDB is a suite of integrated databases designed to assist in this process. The individual databases are species independent and generic in design, providing access to curated datasets relating to plant populations, phenotypic traits, genetic maps, marker loci and QTL, with links to functional gene annotation and genomic sequence data. Each component database provides access to associated metadata, including data provenance and parameters used in analyses, thus providing users with information to evaluate the relative worth of any associations identified. The databases include cropStoreDB, for management of population, genetic map, QTL and trait measurement data, SeqStoreDB for sequence-related data and AlignStoreDB, which stores sequence alignment information, and allows navigation between genetic and genomic datasets. Genetic maps are visualized and compared using the cMAP tool, and functional annotation from sequenced genomes is provided via an EnsEMBL-based genome browser. This framework facilitates navigation of the multiple biological domains involved in genetics and genomics research in a transparent manner within a single portal. A multifaceted approach towards understanding the peculiar behavior of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates

The peculiar isomer-selective reduction of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates(oxime isomers)into(α)-hydroxyaminophosphonate(hydroxylamine)derivatives is presented.A library of 16(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates is prepared and studied via a unique multifaceted approach involving the interplay of NMR,XRD,MS,IM-MS and computational chemistry *** combination of NMR,XRD and HPLc enables the seamless separation,identification and quantification of the oxime isomers(E/Z).Tandem MS(MS/MS)enables the determination of the fragmentation patterns for both *** energy breakdown curves highlight the order of apparition of the fragments as well as their related energy of fragmentation,demonstrating that the strength of the c–P bond in the Z isomers is much weaker than in the E *** chemistry demonstrates that favorable protonation site is isomer-dependent with the phosphonate moiety being the favorable protonation site for the E isomers,while protonation occurs preferentially on the amino moiety for Z isomers regardless of the phosphite *** combination of these various methods led an unprecedented level of characterization of oxime isomers,providing a better uderstanding of the isomer-dependent behavior of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates.

F-Actin reassembly during focal adhesion impacts single cell mechanics and nanoscale membrane structure

Focal adhesions play an important role in cell spreading,migration,and overall mechanical *** relationship of cell structural and mechanical properties was investigated in the context of focal adhesion *** atomic force microscopy(AFM) and laser scanning confocal microscopy(LScM) was utilized to measure single cell mechanics,in correlation with cellular morphology and membrane structures at a nanometer *** stages of focal adhesion were verified via confocal fluorescent studies,which confirmed three representative F-actin assemblies,actin dot,filaments network,and long and aligned fibrous bundles at ***-deformation profiles of living cells were measured at the single cell level,and displayed as a function of height deformation,relative height deformation and relative volume *** focal adhesion progresses,single cell compression profiles indicate that both membrane and cytoskeleton stiffen,while spreading increases especially from focal complex to focal ***,AFM imaging reveals morphological geometries of spherical cap,spreading with polygon boundaries,and elongated or polarized *** features are dominated by protrusions of 41-207 nm tall,short rods with 1-6 μm in length and 10.2-80.0 nm in height,and long fibrous features of 31-246 nm tall,*** protrusion is attributed to local membrane folding,and the rod and fibrous features are consistent with bilayer decorating over the F-actin *** collectively,the reassembly of F-actin during focal adhesion formation is most likely responsible for the changes in cellular mechanics,spreading morphology,and membrane structural features.
