Natural or human-influenced.d.sturbances are important to the health and.d.versity of forests, which in turn, are important to the water quantity and.quality exported.from a catchment. However, human-ind.ced.d.sturbances （prescribed.fire and.harvesting） have been d.creasing, and.natural d.sturbances （fires and.insects） have been increasing in frequency and.severity. One such natural d.sturbance is the mountain pine beetle （MPB）, （d.nclroctonus pond.rosae） an end.mic species. A recent epid.mic resulted.in the mortality of millions of hectares of lod.epole pine （Pinus contorta） forests in Colorad., USA. Beetle-ind.ced.tree mortality brings about changes to the hyd.ologic cycle, includ.ng d.creased.transpiration and.interception with the loss of canopy cover. This stud. examined.the effect of the mountain pine beetle kill on source water contributions to streamflow in snowmelt- d.minated.head.ater catchments using stable isotopes （2H and.~80） as tracers. Stud. catchments with varying level of beetle-killed.forest area （6% to 97%） were sampled.for ground.ater, surface water, and.precipitation. Streams were sampled.to assess whether beetle-killed.forests have altered.source water contributions to streamflow. Ground. water contributions increased.with increasing beetle-killed.forest area （p = 0.008）. Both rain and.snow contributions were negatively correlated.with beetle-killed.forest area （p = 0.035 and.p = 0.011, respectively）. As the beetle-killed.forest area increases, so d.es fractional ground.ater contribution to streamflow.

Gestational trophoblastic d.sease is an abnormal proliferation of trophoblastic tissue d.ring pregnancy. It occurs in women of child.earing age, although a few cases have also been observed.in post-menopausal women, although it is extremely rare in the latter. Here we d.scribe a rare case of complete hyd.tid.form mole in a 56-year-old.female patient who presented.with genital bleed.ng combined.with nausea and.vomiting and.a gravid.uterus 16 cm in height. The ultrasound.find.ngs and.the increase in serum β-HCG to 182566.00 mIU/ml suggested.a d.agnosis of complete hyd.tid.form mole. Given the post-menopausal state and.the future risk of post-molar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, we opted.for total hysterectomy without preservation of the ad.exa via a transabd.minal approach, followed.by antimitotic treatment with methotrexate. The uterus measured.18.45 cm × 11.18 cm with intra cavitary vesicles. Microscopic examination showed.chorionic villi of variable size and.shape, most of which were d.lated.and.oed.matous, associated.with trophoblastic cell proliferation and.haemorrhage suggestive of complete benign hyd.tid.form mole. Follow-up showed.a consistent d.crease in serum β-HCG levels and.no evid.nce of resid.al d.sease. A suspicion of gestational trophoblastic d.sease should.be borne in mind.when evaluating a patient with peri- or post-menopausal bleed.ng to avoid.d.lay in d.agnosis and.treatment.

Animal habitat selection, among other ecological phenomena, is spatially scale d.pend.nt. Habitat selection by American beavers Castor canad.nsis （hereafter, beaver） has been stud.ed.at singular spatial scales, but to d.te no research ad.resses multi-scale selection. Our objectives were to d.termine if beaver habitat selection was specialized.to semiaquatic habitats and.if variables explaining habitat selection are consistent between land.cape and.fine spatial scales. We built maximum entropy （MaxEnt） mod.ls to relate land.cape-scale presence-only d.ta to land.cape variables, and.used.generalized.linear mixed.mod.ls to evaluate fine spatial scale habitat selection using global positioning system （GPS） relocation d.ta. Explanatory variables between the land.cape and.fine spatial scale were compared.for consistency. Our find.ngs suggested.that beaver habitat selection at coarse （stud. area） and.fine （within home range） scales was congruent, and.was influenced.by increasing amounts of wood. wetland.ed.e d.nsity and.shrub ed.e d.nsity, and.d.creasing amounts of open water ed.e d.nsity. Habitat suitability at the land.cape scale also increased.with d.creasing amounts of grass frequency. As territorial, central-place foragers, beavers likely trad.-off open water ed.e d.nsity （i.e., smaller non-forested.wetland. or lod.es closer to banks） for d.fense and.shorter d.stances to forage and.obtain construction material. Wood. plants along ed.es and.expanses of open water for pred.tor avoid.nce may limit beaver fitness and.subsequently d.termine beaver habitat selection.
