Background:Physical activity(PA)is important for cancer survivors.Trials of remotely delivered interventions are needed to assist in reaching under-served non-metropolitan cancer survivors.The objective of this study was to ascertain whether wearable technology,coupled with health coaching was effective in increasing PA in breast and colorectal cancer survivors living in regional and remote areas in Australia.Methods:Cancer survivors from 5 states were randomized to intervention and control arms.Intervention participants were given a Fitbit Charge 2TMand received up to 6 telephone health coaching sessions.Control participants received PA print materials.Accelerometer assessments at baseline and 12 weeks measured moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA),light PA,and sedentary behavior.Results:Eighty-seven participants were recruited(age=63±11 years;74(85%)female).There was a significant net improvement in MVPA of 49.8 min/week,favoring the intervention group(95%confidence interval(95%CI):13.6-86.1,p=0.007).There was also a net increase in MVPA bouts of 39.5 min/week(95%CI:11.9-67.1,p=0.005),favoring the intervention group.Both groups improved light PA and sedentary behavior,but there were no between-group differences.Conclusion:This’s the first study to demonstrate that,when compared to standard practice(i.e.,PA education),a wearable technology intervention coupled with distance-based health coaching,improves MVPA in non-metropolitan cancer survivors.The results display promise for the use of scalable interventions using smart wearable technology in conjunction with phone-based health coaching to foster increased PA in geographically disadvantaged cancer survivors.

Eye contact and sociability data suggests that Australian dingoes were never domesticated

Dogs were the first animal to become domesticated by humans,and they represent a classic model system for unraveling the processes of domestication.We compare Australian dingo eye contact and socialization with Basenji and German Shepherd dog(GSD)breeds.Australian dingoes arrived in Australia 5,000–8,000 BP,and there is debate whether they were domesticated before their arrival.The Basenji represents a primitive breed that diverged from the remaining breeds early in the domestication process,while GSDs are a breed dog selected from existing domestic dogs in the late 1800s.We conducted a 4-phase study with unfamiliar and familiar investigators either sitting passively or actively calling each canid.We found 75%of dingoes made eye contact in each phase.In contrast,86%of Basenjis and 96%of GSDs made eye contact.Dingoes also exhibited shorter eye-gaze duration than breed dogs and did not respond to their name being called actively.Sociability,quantified as a canid coming within 1m of the experimenter,was lowest for dingoes and highest for GSDs.For sociability duration,dingoes spent less time within 1m of the experimenter than either breed dog.When compared with previous studies,these data show that the dingo is behaviorally intermediate between wild wolves and Basenji dogs and suggest that it was not domesticated before it arrived in Australia.However,it remains possible that the accumulation of mutations since colonization has obscured historical behaviors,and dingoes now exist in a feralized retamed cycle.Additional morphological and genetic data are required to resolve this conundrum.

Milk protein concentrate and reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate as natural emulsifiers in clean label high-protein ice cream manufacture

Clean label food is a rising consumer trend in the food industry.Milk protein concentrate(MPC)and reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate(RCMPC)could serve as natural emulsifiers and increase the total protein content of ice cream products.The objectives of this study were to determine and compare the effects of MPC and RCMPC on ice cream composition,mix viscosity,storage stability,meltdown rate,and texture.A base formulation with 3%non-fat dry milk(NFDM)and no added emulsifiers was set as the control.Three levels of MPC or RCMPC(each powder containing 85%protein)at 1%,2%,and 3%were incorporated by replacing equivalent amounts of NFDM and keeping other ingredients unchanged.All ice cream treatments were processed with a target overrun of 70%and hardened at−25℃in a blast freezer.Additions of MPC or RCMPC at 1%,2%,and 3%corresponded to increases in protein content of ice cream by 15%,30%,and 45%,respectively.The viscosity of the ice-cream mix increased with increasing levels of MPC or RCMPC.In general,higher protein samples had slower meltdown rate and higher values of hardness and adhesiveness,but the trends were inconsistent.No shrinkage in volume was observed in any ice cream stored at−25℃after 180 days.However,an additional storage stability study revealed that the control showed significant shrinkage after 60 days(−6.5%±1.5%),90 days(−7.1%±1.8%),and 180 days(−7.9%±1.1%)in a typical household-style freezer at−13℃.MPC at 1%also showed significant shrinkage after 180 days,while samples with RCMPC at any levels showed no shrinkage at all.Ice cream manufacturers may consider MPC and RCMPC natural alternatives to synthetic emulsifiers,with RCMPC being more effective than MPC in terms of ice cream storage stability.

Determining the earliest growth stage to detect the presence of endophytes in tall fescue and perennial ryegrass seedlings using molecular markers

Background:Tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea[Schreb.],Lolium arundinaceum[Schreb.]Darbysh)and perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne)are important cool-season forage and amenity grasses that have a mutualistic association with an endophytic fungus.Endophytes confer insect and drought resistance to plants but can produce mammalian toxins.Novel endophytes that do not produce mammalian toxins have been introduced to elite cultivars for commercial production.Seed companies need to maintain adequate levels of novel endophytes within the elite forage cultivars.Endophyte detection is performed using immunochemical and molecular techniques because of their speed and reliability.Early detection in seedlings is essential to evaluate the viability of the endophyte within seed lots.Methods:This research aimed to identify the earliest growth stage in which immunochemical and molecular methods can detect viable endophyte in seedlings of tall fescue cultivars BarOptima(e34),Texoma MaxQII(584),and Jesup MaxQ(542),as well as the perennial ryegrass cultivar Remington(NEA2).Results:Immunochemical testing detected endophytes in seedlings 14 days after germination(DAG),but the detection rate increased until 42 DAG in some cultivars tested.The molecular marker Tef1exon detected endophytes at a lower rate than the immunochemical method at 28–42 DAG.However,there was insufficient DNA to detect endophytes in 14 DAG seedlings using markers.Conclusions:We conclude that the most accurate detection of viable endophytes in seedlings was 42 DAG,at which sufficient and consistent endophyte colonization occurred.

Scalable, Green Chain Transfer Agent for Cationic RAFT Polymerizations

Cationic polymerizations of vinyl ethers have gained recent attention due to their ability to produce robust,biorenewable materials.These developments have been largely enabled by the advent of cationic reversible addition−fragmentation chain-transfer(RAFT)polymerization;however,the scalability and sustainability of this method are hindered by current chain-transfer agents(CTAs),which exist as viscous,colored oils requiring complex syntheses and solvent-intensive purification.Herein,we produce a solid,colorless CTA through a green synthetic route in 83%yield on a 50-gram scale.We investigate the utility of this CTA in chemical,electrochemical,photochemical,and acid-initiated methods,revealing that it achieves efficient polymerization with excellent control over molecular weight,low dispersity values,high chain end fidelity,and temporal control in cationic RAFT polymerizations.

Lycopene and male infertility

Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species （ROS） cause a state of oxidative stress, which result in sperm membrane lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and apoptosis, leading to decreased sperm viability and motility. Elevated levels of ROS are a major cause of idiopathic male factor infertility, which is an increasingly common problem today. Lycopene, the most potent singlet oxygen quencher of all carotenoids, is a possible treatment option for male infertility because of its antioxidant properties. By reacting with and neutralizing free radicals, lycopene could reduce the incidence of oxidative stress and thus, lessen the damage that would otherwise be inflicted on spermatozoa. It is postulated that lycopene may have other beneficial effects via nonoxidative mechanisms in the testis, such as gap junction communication, modulation of gene expression, regulation of the cell cycle and immunoenhancement. Various lycopene supplementation studies conducted on both humans and animals have shown promising results in alleviating male infertility--lipid peroxidation and DNA damage were decreased, while sperm count and viability, and general immunity were increased. Improvement of these parameters indicates a reduction in oxidative stress, and thus the spermatozoa is less vulnerable to oxidative damage, which increases the chances of a normal sperm fertilizing the egg. Human trials have reported improvement in sperm parameters and pregnancy rates with supplementation of 4-8 mg of lycopene daily for 3-12 months. However, further detailed and extensive research is still required to determine the dosage and the usefulness of lycopene as a treatment for male infertility.

Development of a brownfield inventory for prioritizing funding outreach in Tucson,Arizona

Fear of liability from the 1980 Comprehensive Environmental Response,Compensation,and Liability Act(CERCLA or Superfund)has prompted developers to build preferentially upon undeveloped green space rather than potentially contaminated former industrial sites,leading to urban sprawl in the suburban areas while blighted properties in the urban core remain vacant.A brownfield is defined as a property in which the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance or contaminant poses a barrier to development.Agencies often create brownfield inventories by performing a site suitability analysis,using distinguishing features such as ecolo-gically and culturally significant areas or neighborhoods that need revitalizing.Pima County,Arizona and the Sonora Environmental Research Institute,Inc.(SERI)developed a brownfield inventory of the large,industrial area directly to the west of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.Because the brownfield target area has few residential neighborhoods and lacks the distinguish-ing features usually used in a brownfield site suitability analysis,the county and SERI used the official tax assessor database and 11 federal,state and county environmental databases to develop a brownfield inventory.The goal of the project was to prioritize properties that stood to benefit from the grant funding.The final brownfield inventory contained 531 parcels.

Second and Third Trimester Fetal Death in the Setting of COVID-19: A California 2020 Case Series

Maternal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy may impact fetal development via vertical transmission,complications of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),or placental injury.However,potential associations between prenatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and fetal loss are not well understood.This case series of thirteen second and third trimester fetal losses reported by local public health departments to California’s state public health surveillance included maternal clinical and demographic characteristics as well as placental pathology,fetal autopsy reports,and coroner report.There was no evidence that maternal COVID-19 disease severity,placental injury,or SARS-CoV-2 vertical transmission contributed to pregnancy loss.However,this case series is a limited sample;more research is needed to identify factors of prenatal SARS-CoV-2 that may contribute to fetal death in the second and third trimesters.
