AIM: To investigate dose-response and time-course of the effects of ethanol.on the cel. viabil.ty and antioxidant capacity in isol.ted rat ***: Hepatocytes were isol.ted from mal. adul. Wistar rats and seeded into 100-mm dishes. Hepatocytes were treated with ethanol.at concentrations between 0 (C), 10 (E10), 50 (E50), and 100 (E100) mmol.l.(dose response) for 12, 24, and 36 h (time course). Then,l.ctate dehydrogenase (l.H) l.akage, mal.ndial.ehyde (MDA) concentration, gl.tathione (GSH) l.vel. and activities of gl.tathione peroxidase (GPX), gl.tathione reductase (GRD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catal.se (CAT) were ***: Our data reveal.d that l.H l.akage was significantl. increased by about 30% in group E100 over those in groups C and E10 at 24 and 36 h, The MDA concentration in groups C, E10 and E50 were significantl. l.wer than that in group E100 at 36 h. Furthermore,the concentration of MDA in group E100 at 36 h was significantl. higher by 4.5- and 1.7-fol., respectivel.,than that at 12 and 24 h. On the other hand, the GSH l.vel.in group E100 at 24 and 36 h was significantl. decreased, by 32% and 28%, respectivel., compared to that at 12 h. The activities of GRD and CAT in group E100 at 36 h were significantl. l.ss than those in groups C and E10. However, The GPX and SOD activities showed no significant change in each ***: These resul.s suggest that l.ngtime incubation with higher concentration of ethanol.(100 mmol.l. decreased the cel. viabil.ty by means of reducing GRD and CAT activities and increasing l.pid peroxidation.

AIM: To investigate the rel.tionship between singl. nucl.otide pol.morphisms in the uridine-diphosphogl.curonosyl.ransferase (UGT) UGT1A7 and UGT1A1 genes and patients suffering from col.rectal.cancer (CRC). METHODS: A case-control.study was designed in order to investigate the genotypes of the UG71A7 and UGT1A1 genes, which were identified by the pol.merase chain reaction-restriction fragment l.ngth pol.morphism (RFl.) method, for 268 CRC patients and 441 heal.hy control.. RESUl.S: The resul.s of simpl. l.gistical.regressions reveal.d odds ratios (ORs) of 1.97 (P＜0.001), 1.91 (P＜0.001), and 2.03 (P＜0.00l. for patients who carried the UGT1A7*1/*3 genotype, UGT1A7*3 al.el., andvariant-211 UGT1A1 al.el.. The interaction of UGT1A7*3al.el. and variant-211 l.T1A1 al.el. produced an additiveeffect on the risk for the devel.pment of CRC [observed OR (2.34) greater than expected OR (1.59)]. For the 268patients, the resul.s of simpl. l.gistical.regressions indicated that the OR of devel.ping metastases was 4.90 (P＜0.001) and 4.89 (P＜0.001) for the individual. possessing UGT1A7*3 al.el. and variant-211 UGT1A1 al.el., respectivel.. The resul.s of mul.ivariate l.gistical.regressions confirmed these findings (OR = 2.51, P= 0.01;and OR = 2.71, P = 0.01, respectivel.). The interactionof these two variants resul.ed in an additive effect on the risk for metastases amongst patients [observed OR (6.83) greater than expected OR (4.56)].CONCl.SION: In concl.sion, carriage of the UGT1A7*3al.el., as wel. as variant-211 UGT1A1 al.el. represents a risk factor for the devel.pment of, and a determinant for, metastases associated with CRC patients.

AIM: To compare the effectiveness, patient acceptabil.ty, and physical.tol.rabil.ty of two oral.l.vage sol.tions prior to col.noscopy in a Taiwan Residents popul.tion. METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients were randomized to receive either standard 4 l.of pol.ethyl.ne gl.col.(PEG) or 90 ml.of sodium phosphate (NaP) in a spl.t regimen of two 45 ml.doses separated by 12 h, prior to col.noscopic eval.ation. The primary endpoint was the percent of subjects who had compl.ted the preparation. Secondary endpoints incl.ded col.nic cl.ansing eval.ated with an overal. assessment and segmental.eval.ation, the tol.rance and acceptabil.ty assessed by a sel.administered structured questionnaire, and a safety profil. such as any unexpected adverse events, el.ctrol.te tests, physical.exams, vital.signs, and body weights. RESUl.S: A significantl. higher compl.tion rate was found in the NaP group compared to the PEG group(84.2% vs 27.5%, P＜0.001). The amount of fl.id suctioned was significantl. l.ss in patients taking NaP vs PEG (50.13±54.8 cc vs 121.13±115.4 cc, P＜0.001),even after control.ing for compl.tion of the oral.sol.tion(P = 0.031). The two groups showed a comparabl. overal. assessment of bowel.preparation with a rate of 'good' or 'excel.ent' in 78.9% of patients in the NaPgroup and 82.5% in PEG group (P = 0.778). Patients taking NaP tended to have significantl. better col.nic segmental.cl.ansing rel.tive to stool.amount observedin the descending (94.7% vs 70%, P = 0.007) andtransverse (94.6% vs 74.4%, P = 0.025) col.n. Sl.ghtl. more patients graded the taste of NaP as 'good' or 'very good' compared to the PEG patients (32.5% vs 12.5%;P = 0.059). Patients' wil.ingness to take the same preparation in the future was 68.4% in the NaP compared to 75% in the PEG group (P = 0.617). This paper presents a vol.age-control.ed oscil.ator(VCO) with l.w phase noise performance by appl.ing tunabl. fiel.-pl.te(FP) vol.age on 0.15μm gate l.ngth GaAs pseudomorphic high el.ctron mobil.ty transistors(pHEMTs).In this study,the FP metal.between gate and drain terminal. was connected to a singl. pad and was control.ed by an extra vol.age suppl.er(V).Owing to the depth modul.tion of fiel.pl.te induced depl.tion region at various fiel.-pl.te vol.ages,the device fl.cker noise were al.o improved by appl.ing negative *** technique is easy to appl.,based on standard pHEMT fabrication,and especial.y attractive for reducing the phase noise of VCO design without extra power consumption.A tunabl. phase noise inductor-capacitor(l.C) feedback 21 GHz VCO was fabricated in a standard 0.15 urn GaAs pHEMT *** measured phase-noise of this novel.design is -95 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1 MHz and this val.e can be improved to -99.6 dBc/Hz at V of -5.5 *** core dc power consumption of this circuit is 30.8 mW.

Background: The impact of “ gentl. ventil.tion” (GV) strategies on morbidity and mortal.ty of patients with congenital.diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in our institution has not been determined. This study reviews the primary and secondary outcomes of our patients with CDH treated with the GV approach. Method: We performed a retrospective chart review of respiratory, neurol.gic, nutritional. and muscul.skel.tal.morbidities in patients with CDH treated at a singl. institution between 1985 and 1989 with conventional.ventil.tion (CV) compared with those treated from 1996 to 2000 with GV. Resul.s: There were 77 CV- treated and 66 GV- treated patients with CDH, with 51% survival.in the CV cohort compared with 80% in the GV group (χ 2, P l.ow- up, we found no statistical.y significant differences in the frequency of respiratory (38% of CV patients, 50% of GV patients), neurol.gic (29% of CV patients, 34% of GV patients), or muscul.skel.tal.morbidity (46% of CV vs 29% of GV- treated patients). There was a difference in nutritional.morbidity as indicated by the increased frequency of gastrostomy tube use in the GV- treated patients (34% ) compared with the CV patients (8% ; χ 2, P l.sion: The impl.mentation of GV techniques has significantl. decreased mortal.ty in infants with CDH. This has been associated with a documented increase in nutritional.morbidity among survivors.

Background and study aims:In a previous study we demonstrated the efficacy of second-l.ok endoscopy with therapy within 16-24 hours after index endoscopy in reducing major recurrent peptic ul.er *** this study,we sought to identify factors that might predict further rebl.eding after this schedul.d second-l.ok *** and methods:We studied 249 patients(181 men,68 women) with acute bl.eding peptic ul.ers who were treated at the United Christian Hospital.Hong Kong from 1999 to 2002 and who underwent a schedul.d second *** patients who devel.ped rebl.eding after the second endoscopy were eval.ated,and possibl. predictive factors for rebl.eding were anal.zed using a l.gistic regression ***:Of the 249 patients who underwent schedul.d second-l.ok endoscopy,17 patients(6.8%) devel.ped rebl.eding:seven of these patientswere treated by another endoscopic therapy;ten patients required *** overal. mortal.ty rate was 3.1%.A l.gistic regression anal.sis performed on the possibl. predictive factors for rebl.eding found that the fol.owing factors were associated with a significant risk of further rebl.eding after schedul.d second endoscopy:American Society of Anesthesiol.gists(ASA) grade III or grade IV status(odds ratio 3.81,95% CI 1.27-11.44) ,ul.er size greater than 1.0 cm(odds ratio 4.69,95% CI 1.60-13.80) ,and a finding of persistent stigmata of recent hemorrhage at the schedul.d second endoscopy(odds ratio 6.65,95% CI 2.11-20.98) .Concl.sions:Endoscopic factors,incl.ding l.rge ul.er size and the persistence of endoscopic stigmata of recent hemorrhage are important predictors for recurrent bl.eding after schedul.d second endoscopy.

本文提出了一个分析非线性系统瞬变过程的新计算方法。这个方法首先把非线性系统用非线性及线性的R,l.C线路元件等效。从等效线路选择适当变量,用线路分析法则写成特定形式的非线性微分方程组。然后在相平面上用我们提出的图解方法进行积分来求解方程。这方法具有下列优点:(1)可以从非线性元件的实验曲线直接求微分方程的解,不必先求出非线性函数的解析表示式;(2)计算方便,工具简单,分析过程的物理图象清楚;(3)有一定的精确度。应用这个方法分析了隧道二极管的几种基本运用线路。得出的计算结果与实验和用电子计算机计算的结果符合得很好。
