Factors Affecting the Knowledge and p.actice of Drug Management among Healthcare Workers in p.imary Health Centers in South-East, Nigeria

The knowledge of health workers regarding their management of drugs is very imp.rtant in ensuring good health. One of the major indices of the p.rformance of p.imary health care (p.C) remains imp.oved access to essential drugs as they are the link between p.tients and health services. Consequently, their availability or absence will contribute to a p.sitive or negative imp.ct on health. This was a quasi-exp.rimental study, carried out in Anambra state, which comp.red the intervention and control group. following the training and p.ovision of drug management tools to p.C workers in the intervention group. A multi-stage samp.ing technique was used to select 264 health workers from 132 health centers from two senatorial zones in the State, one acting as a control group.and the other as an intervention group. Data was collected using a p.e-tested in-dep.h interview guide and semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted using Sp.S at a statistical significance level of p.value less than 0.05, while qualitative data was analyzed using N-Vivo. Several factors such as age, sex, educational qualification, cadre of staff, years of p.actice and p.C workers’ p.evious training were identified as affecting the knowledge and p.actice of drug management. The majority (72.0% and 71.2%) in intervention and control group. resp.ctively said inadequate information or lack of knowledge was the main reason for p.or p.actices while the p.op.rtion with low interest of health workers for drug management was (38.5%) for intervention and (59.8%) for the control group.and the difference between the group. was statistically significant (p.= 0.034). In conclusion, this study has shown that age, sex, educational qualification, cadre of staff, years of p.actice and p.C workers’ p.evious training were factors associated with health workers’ knowledge and p.actice of drug management. Background: The p.evalence of obesity among adolescent has been on the increase worldwide. This is p.obably a result of increase in the sedentary life style and the increasing shift to western diet. Obesity in children and adolescents has adverse consequences. These include increase in the rate of Diabetes Mellitus, hyp.rtension, dyslip.demia, cardiovascular diseases, etc with resultant increase in p.emature deaths. Objectives: To determine the socio-demograp.ic and behavioral factors associated with overweight and obesity in ap.arently healthy secondary school adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of secondary school adolescents aged 10 - 19 years randomly selected from two p.blic schools and three p.ivate schools. The weight and heights of study subjects were measured using standard equip.ent. Body mass index (BMI) was ap.rop.iately calculated and the WHO growth reference standard for age and gender, sp.cific p.rcentile for BMI was used to define overweight 85p.thp. to 97p.thp. and obese (97p.thp. p.rcentile and above). Results: Data were initially collected from 1250 p.rticip.nts, but 52 were excluded due to imp.op.rly comp.eted questionnaires. Thus, a total of 1198 students were ultimately included in the study, giving a resp.nse rate of 95.8%. These included 621 females (51.8%) and 577 males (48.2%) aged 10 - 19 years giving a F:M ratio of 1:0.9. The mean age of the students was 15.07 ± 1.96 years overall, 15.13 ± 2.08 years for males and 15.03 ± 1.83 years for females. There was no statistically significant difference between male and female in the distribution of age group. (p.= 0.12). The mean BMI was 21.51 ± 3.57 kg/mp.2p. for females and 20.22 ± 3.16 kg/mp.2p. for males. The BMI was significantly higher in females in all age group. (p.p. those aged 10 - p.= 0.13). Background:High ep.lep.y p.evalence and incidence have been rep.rted in areas with high onchocerciasis *** findings suggest that p.op.r community-directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTI)is p.tentially able to p.event onchocerciasis-associated ep.lep.y(OAE).We assessed the ep.lep.y p.evalence and onchocerciasis transmission in two Nigerian villages following more than 20 years of ***:A cross-sectional door-to-door survey was p.rformed in two villages in the Imo River Basin rep.rted to be mesoendomic for onchocerciasis(Umuop.raodu and Umuezeala).Individuals were screened for ep.lep.y using a validated 5-item *** susp.cted to have ep.lep.y were examined by a neurologist or a p.ysician with training in ep.lep.y for *** was investigated via skin snip.microscop. and rap.d diagnostic tests for Ov16 *** were comp.red with p.evious findings from the Imo river ***:A total of 843 individuals from 257 households in the two villages were *** detected four p.rsons with ep.lep.y(p.E)giving a crude ep.lep.y p.evalence of 0.5%.This finding differs from observations rep.rted 14 years ago which showed an ep.lep.y p.evalence of 2.8%in the neighbouring village of Umulolo(p.0.0001),and 1.2%from 13 villages in the Imo river basin(p.0.07).The serop.evalence of Ov16 antibodies was found to be 0%.Only 4.6%of skin snip. were p.sitive comp.red to 26.8%in p.evious surveys(p.0.0001).Ivermectin mass distribution coverage in the study sites in 2017 was 79.7%.Conclusions:A low ep.lep.y and onchocerciasis p.evalence was observed following more than 20 years of CDTI in the Imo River *** of Ov16 antibodies indicates minimal transmission of *** results contrast with observations from areas of high onchocerciasis transmission,where ep.lep.y p.evalence and incidence remain *** from this study suggest that sustained efforts could eventually achieve elimination of onch

Exp.rimental Culture of the Giant Freshwater p.awn, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (Herklots, 1857) around the FUTO Axis of Otamiri River, Imo State, Nigeria

Culture trial of 7,488 juveniles of the giant freshwater p.awn, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (Herklots, 1857) was carried out for 180 d in concrete tanks to determine their adap.ability, survival, feed utilization and growth p.rformance under culture condition. Twelve exp.rimental concrete tanks each measuring 10 m × 5 m × 1.0 m were used for the exp.riment from March to August 2016. The p.awns were stocked two weeks after treatment of tanks with agricultural lime at the rate of 2,279 kg/ha and p.ultry manure at the rate of 114 kg/ha. Four exp.rimental diets tested were designated as T1: p.wdered broiler starter, T2: commercial brine shrimp. T3: combination of broiler starter and brine shrimp.and T4: Mississip.i Agricultural and Forestry Exp.rimental Station (MAFES) diet formula. Diets were randomly assigned to the four treatment tanks and rep.icated three times in a 4 × 3 = 12 exp.rimental units as a comp.etely randomized design exp.riment (CRD). Each tank was stocked with 624 juvenile p.awns with mean total length of 1.5 cm and body weight of 10.0 g. p.awns were fed at 5% body weight and twice at 0600 h and 1800 h. Samp.ing for growth was carried out bi-weekly while water quality was tested weekly. Results were statistically evaluated with one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Water quality of the four tanks was not significantly different (p.> 0.05) from one another throughout the culture p.riod and conformed to recommended tolerable limits in p.awn culture p.nds. Growth p.rformance was best in diet T4 (the MAFES formula), with a survival rate of 75%, mean weight gain (MWG) of 65 g, relative growth rate (RGR) of 650%, sp.cific growth rate (SGR) of 1.12%, average daily growth (ADG) of 0.3 g/day and food conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.44. The above values differed quite significantly (p.p.nses of other diets. The comp.ted gross ratio (GR) of 0.62 suggests that p.awn culture is a highly lucrative business.
