Low-level laser acupuncture reduces postoperative pain and morphine consumption in older patients with total knee arthroplasty: A randomized placebo-controlled trial

Background: Patients commonly develop postoperative pain after total knee arthroplasty(TKA).Acupuncture-related techniques and low-level laser therapy could be beneficial for pain management for older ***: To examine the effect of low-level laser acupuncture(LA) in reducing postoperative pain, painrelated interference in daily life, morphine consumption, and morphine-related side effects in older patients with knee osteoarthritis who underwent ***, setting, participants and intervention: A single-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Patients(N = 82) were recruited and randomly assigned via a computer-generated list to the LA group or a placebo group. The LA group received low-level laser therapy at Sanyinjiao(SP6), Taixi(KI3),Kunlun(BL60), Fengshi(GB31), Futu(ST32) and Neiguan(PC6) after TKA, while the placebo acupuncture group received the same treatment procedure without laser energy *** outcome measures: The primary outcome was postoperative pain intensity, and it was measured at baseline and hours 2, 6, 10, 24, 48 and 72 after TKA. The secondary outcomes, including relative pain,postoperative pain-related interference in daily life and morphine consumption, were measured at hours24, 48 and 72 after ***: Generalized estimating equations revealed significant between-group differences in pain intensity(P = 0.01), and trend differences in pain intensity for the LA group starting at hours 10 to 72(P < 0.05)and morphine consumption at hours 48 and 72(P < 0.05). The changes in pain-related interference in daily life were significant(P < 0.05) at 72 h, with the exception of the parameters for worst pain, mood,and sleep. Nausea and vomiting side effects from morphine had significant between-group differences at hours 10 and 24(P < 0.05).Conclusion: Low-level LA gradually reduced older patients’ postoperative pain intensity and morphine consumption within the first 72 h after their TKA for osteoarthritis. MRI Investigation of New Approach to Improve the Recovery of Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury by Treatment with Intralipid^®

Background: Despite advances in revascularization and thrombolytic therapy, the outcome of patients after acute myocardial infarction (MI) could be complicated by ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) and subsequent ventricular remodeling. Inflammation plays a central role in IRI. Intralipid® has been shown to reduce infarct size after IRI, but its effects on myocardial inflammation have not been addressed. The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of Intralipid® on in-situ myocardial inflammation and to better characterize its cardio-protective effects. Methods and Results: Cellular MRI was used to evaluate myocardial inflammation of iron-oxide-labeled macrophage infiltration. Cardiac MRI was used to evaluate global and regional ventricular wall motion, as well as myocardial perfusion and infarction in a rat model. Our results show that the Intralipid® treatment following IRI can preserve global and regional ventricular wall motion, and reduce the infarct size. The In-tralipid®-treated rats exhibit reduced myocardial macrophage infiltration, indicating reduced in-situ myocardial inflammation. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the Intralipid® treatment can protect the heart against IRI and can specifically reduce in-situ myocardial inflammation. Additional study is needed to assess if treatment using Intralipid® after LAD occlusion could improve the recovery of patients suffering from a heart attack and also reduce future development of heart failure.

Microstructures and properties of cancellous bone of avascular necrosis of femoral heads

The aim of this study is to investigate microscopic structure and characterize cancellous bone of avascular necrosis of the femoral head （ANFH）. The rabbit model of the ANFH is established. The histopathologic features are studied successfully. The differences between the steroidinjection group （S.G.） and the controlled group （C.G.） are examined, including the weight of rabbits, the hematological examination and the three-dimensional stnactures. It is found that the plasma levels of cholesterol （CHO）, high-density lipoprotein （HDL） and low-density lipoprotein （LDL） in S.G. are lower than those in C.G. when the triglyceride （TG） increased in the S.G.; but the bone mineral content （BMC） and the structural model index （SMI） of the organ and tissue decreased significantly in S.G. Three-dimensional structures of the femoral head are obtained using micro-computed tomography （CT） scanning and the mechanical model is established to analyze the influences of these structural changes on the mechanical properties of the cancellous bone.

A blue phosphor Ca2PO4Cl:Eu2+(CAP:Eu2+) was synthesized by solid state *** Ca2PO4Cl:Eu2+ exhibited high quantum efficiency and excellent thermal *** luminescent intensity of Ca2PO4Cl:Eu2+ was found to be 128% under excitation at 380 nm,149% under 400 nm,and 247% under 420 nm as high as that of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+.The optimal doping concentration was observed to 11 mol.% of CAP:Eu2+.The energy transfer between Eu2+ ions in CAP were occurred via electric multipolar interaction,and the critical transfer distance was estimated to be 1.26 nm.A mixture of blue-emitting Ca2PO4Cl:Eu2+,green-emitting(Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ and red-emitting CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors were selected in conjunction with 400 nm chip to fabricate white LED *** average color-rendering index Ra and correlated color temperature(Tc) of the white LEDs were found to be 93.4 and 4590 K,*** results indicated that it was a promising candidate as a blue-emitting phosphor for the near-UV white light-emitting diodes.

The experimental study for the allocation of ground-sills downstream of check dams

The main purpose of this study is to understand the stabilizing effect of ground-sills on the riverbed through a series of flume model experiments. From results, although check dams have the ability to control upstream sediment transport, the mass energy produced by the free fall of the overtopping discharge still causes strong local scour downstream of the structure, and this scour leads to the instability of the check dam. Therefore, this study conducted model experiments on various types of serial ground-sills to determine the appropriate spacing to best protect the downstream bed. Based on the observations and analysis of channel geomorphology and sedimentation, this study concluded the following results: 1) Serial ground-sills reduces the sediment transport ability perfectly, especially under a mild channel gradient equipped with 2-4 times the average channel width interval. But for steep slopes, it is suggested that the proper spacing should be shortened to 1-2 times the average channel width. 2) Ground-sills can effectively protect the streambed from scouring under a suitable equipped condition and the concepts of guiding scour and riverbed inertia were used in the analysis of optimal ground-sill spacing.

A light-weight high-entropy alloy （LWHEA） A120Be20Fe10SilsTi35 has been developed to have unique mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. One major and two minor phases are observed in the as-east microstructure. The density of the alloy is 3.91 gcm-3, and its hardness is HV 911, which is higher than quartz. The hardness and hardness to density ratio are the highest of all light-weight alloys reported before. In addition, it has excellent oxidation resistance at 700℃ and 900℃, which far exceeds that of Ti-6A1-4V. Thus, the combination of properties is promising for high-temperature applications, which require light weight, wear-resistant and oxidation-resistant components.
