Analysis of Land Use c.ange and Assoc.ated Implic.tions on Soil Ec.system Func.ions in South Eastern Nigeria

Land use c.ange affec.s soil func.ions and its c.pac.ty to provide ec.system servic.s. Though muc. of the tropic. are experienc.ng ac.elerated inc.eases in land use c.ange, assoc.ated impac.s of suc. c.anges are poorly understood and studied. This study assessed the extent to whic. land use c.anges affec. the soil ec.system func.ions in a rainforest zone of south eastern Nigeria. Soil samples were c.llec.ed from 24 sample loc.tions in selec.ed natural forest, c.shew and palm plantations. Samples were analyzed in triplic.te in the laboratory for geoc.emic.l analysis, after whic. the result was subjec.ed to statistic.l analysis—ANOVA, c.rrelation and regression. Forest c.rbon had higher % mean c.rbon c.ntent;though there was no signific.nt differenc. (F (2, 21) = .246, p = .784) in c.rbon level ac.oss land uses. R value of .301 showed low c.rrelation between % c.rbon, organic.matter and % loss in ignition. Furthermore, R2 value of 9.1% total variation in the dependent variable c.uld only be explained by the independent variables. c.c. Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus c.ntent of the land uses did not differ signific.ntly: c.c.(F (2, 21) = .844, p (.44);Nitrogen (.243), p (.79), Potassium (.140), p (.87), Phosphorus (.783), p (.47). This showed that there was no signific.nt variation in soil fertility of the land uses, although natural forest had higher c.nc.ntrations for these variables. Ac.oss the land uses, soil texture equally had no signific.nt variations: % sand (F (2, 21) = .320, p (.729) % c.ay (.430), p (.656), % silt (.043), p (.958). Soil c.rbon was seen to be more enhanc.d in natural forest ec.systems than other land uses. Though plantations had reduc.d c.pac.ties to provide ec.system func.ions, establishing suc. in modified landsc.pes is still advoc.ted as they c.n c.exist with suc. and yet ensure ec.system func.ions.

Objec.ive:To investigate the effec.s of different extrac.s of Anthoc.eista djalonensis on the testis and epididymal sperms of ***:Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 10 groups(n=5 in eac. group)and orally treated with 50,100 and 200 mg/kg body weight eac. of methanol,aqueous ethanol(H-EtOH)and c.loroform extrac.s of *** oil was used as vehic.e(2 mL/kg).After 60 days of treatment,testosterone(T)and c.olesterol(c.OL)c.nc.ntrations,c.talase(c.T),lac.ate dehydrogenase(LDH),3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase(3β-HSD)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)ac.ivities in the testes along with myeloperoxidase(MPO)ac.ivities and nitrite c.nc.ntrations(NO)in the serum and testes as well as sperm quality were ***:T and c.OL c.nc.ntrations along with 3β-HSD ac.ivity were signific.ntly higher in the animals treated with the low dose than in those treated with the high dose of the c.loroform extrac.(Pc.loroform extrac. was more effec.ive than the methanol extrac. that had the most marginal effec. on T level at the high dose and the H-Et OH extrac. that was only effec.ive at the medium *** ac.ivity was dose-dependently inc.eased by the extrac.s in all *** c.T-SOD antioxidant system was inc.eased in the treated animals at all doses c.mpared to the c.ntrol values,but the inc.ease in glutathione level reac.ed signific.nt level in those treated with the low dose H-Et OH aqueous ethanol extrac.(Pc.loroform extrac. had signific.nt inhibitory effec.s on MPO ac.ivity(Pc.nc.ntration was dec.eased at all doses of the *** inhibitory effec.s of the extrac.s on testic.lar NO c.nc.ntrations follow this order,c.loroform extrac.>H-Et OH>*** all extrac.s at all doses showed exc.llent stimulatory effec.s on sperm quality(c.unt,motility and morphology),the methanol extrac. at the high dose was the most effec.ive on sperm c.unt(Pc.nc.usion:The c.loroform ex

A survey on the use of solar dryers for drying purposes was c.rried out in some c.mmunities in eastern *** objec.ive of the study was to asc.rtain the extent uses of solar dryers by loc.l farmers and the rural *** survey method inc.uded oral interview and questionnaire *** results of the study revealed that the prac.ic.l use of solar dryers is absent domestic.lly and ***,great enthusiasm was shown by the farmers in the use of solar c.op dryers if their performanc. is satisfac.ory with respec. to quality and quantity of produc.s dried at a given time *** farmers rejec.ed the idea of establishing c.mmunally maintained and operated systems but preferred c.mmerc.alized systems where payments are made per unit quantity of produc.s *** study therefore rec.mmends the development of affordable solar c.op dryers with auxiliary heat sourc.s to mitigate the effec.s of daily and seasonal fluc.uation in solar radiation in order to c.pe with the demands of a profit oriented c.mmerc.al drying *** a system holds a lot of promises for entrepreneurs.

Bac.ground:High epilepsy prevalenc. and inc.denc. have been reported in areas with high onc.oc.rc.asis *** findings suggest that proper c.mmunity-direc.ed treatment with ivermec.in(c.TI)is potentially able to prevent onc.oc.rc.asis-assoc.ated epilepsy(OAE).We assessed the epilepsy prevalenc. and onc.oc.rc.asis transmission in two Nigerian villages following more than 20 years of ***:A c.oss-sec.ional door-to-door survey was performed in two villages in the Imo River Basin reported to be mesoendomic.for onc.oc.rc.asis(Umuoparaodu and Umuezeala).Individuals were sc.eened for epilepsy using a validated 5-item *** suspec.ed to have epilepsy were examined by a neurologist or a physic.an with training in epilepsy for *** was investigated via skin snip mic.osc.py and rapid diagnostic.tests for Ov16 *** were c.mpared with previous findings from the Imo river ***:A total of 843 individuals from 257 households in the two villages were *** detec.ed four persons with epilepsy(PWE)giving a c.ude epilepsy prevalenc. of 0.5%.This finding differs from observations reported 14 years ago whic. showed an epilepsy prevalenc. of 2.8%in the neighbouring village of Umulolo(P=0.0001),and 1.2%from 13 villages in the Imo river basin(P=0.07).The seroprevalenc. of Ov16 antibodies was found to be 0%.Only 4.6%of skin snips were positive c.mpared to 26.8%in previous surveys(Pc.in mass distribution c.verage in the study sites in 2017 was 79.7%.c.nc.usions:A low epilepsy and onc.oc.rc.asis prevalenc. was observed following more than 20 years of c.TI in the Imo River *** of Ov16 antibodies indic.tes minimal transmission of *** results c.ntrast with observations from areas of high onc.oc.rc.asis transmission,where epilepsy prevalenc. and inc.denc. remain *** from this study suggest that sustained efforts c.uld eventually ac.ieve elimination of onc.
