Chinese herbal medicine decreases incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in diabetes mellitus patients with regular insulin management

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM)is an independent risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),while insulin is a potent mitogen.Identifying a new therapeutic modality for preventing insulin users from developing HCC is a critical goal for researchers.AIM To investigate whether regular herbal medicine use can decrease HCC risk in DM patients with regular insulin control.METHODS We used data acquired from the Taiwan,Chinaese National Health Insurance research database between 2000 and 2017.We identified patients with DM who were prescribed insulin for>3 months.The herb user group was further defined as patients prescribed herbal medication for DM for>3 months per annum during RESULTS We initially enrolled 657144 DM patients with regular insulin use from 2000 to 2017.Among these,46849 patients had used a herbal treatment for DM,and 140547 patients were included as the matched control group.The baseline variables were similar between the herb users and nonusers.DM patients with regular herb use had a 12%decreased risk of HCC compared with the control group[adjusted hazard ratio(aHR)=0.88,95%CI=0.80–0.97].The cumulative incidence of HCC in the herb users was significantly lower than that of the nonusers.Patients with a herb use of>5 years cumulatively exhibited a protective effect against development of HCC(aHR=0.82,P<0.05).Of patients who developed HCC,herb users exhibited a longer survival time than nonusers(aHR=0.78,P=0.0001).Additionally,we report the top 10 herbs and formulas in prescriptions and summarize the potential pharmacological effects of the constituents.Our analysis indicated that Astragalus propinquus(Huang Qi)plus Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge(Dan Shen),and Astragalus propinquus(Huang Qi)plus Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim.(Tian Hua Fen)were the most frequent combination of single herbs.Meanwhile,Ji Sheng Shen Qi Wan plus Dan Shen was the most frequent combination of herbs and formulas.CONCLUSION This large-scale retrospective cohort study reveals that herbal medicine may decrease HCC risk by 12%i

Emissions of C_2-C_(12) hydrocarbons in the Hsuehshan tunnel,Taiwan

The concentrations of 56 hydrocarbons from C2 to C12 were measured simultaneously in the southbound bore,the northbound bore and the exhaust air shafts of the Hsuehshan tunnel near Yilan,Taiwan for 12 days during 2007 and 2008.A total of 60 integrated air samples were collected using stainless steel canisters and analyzed using GC/FID and GC/MS.The five most abundant species in all samples were ethylene,acetylene,isopentane,propylene and toluene.The exit/entrance ratios of total non-methane hydrocarbons（NMHC） concentration were 7.8 and 4.8 for the southbound and northbound bores,respectively.Furthermore,the exhaust from the vertical shafts a？ects air quality in the neighborhood.The most abundant species of emission rate（ER） was toluene（21.93-42.89 mg/sec）,followed by isopentane,ethylene,propylene and 1-butene,with ER ranging from 2.50 to 9.31 mg/sec.The species in the three exhaust air shafts showed that the reactivities of these emissions are similar to those of vehicle emissions.Notably,the control of emissions in the vertical shafts of the vehicle tunnel will be important in the future.

Influence of rice straw burning on the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in agricultural county of Taiwan

Atmospheric particulate and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） size distribution were measured at Jhu-Shan （a rural site） and Sin-Gang （a town site） in central Taiwan during the rice straw burning and non-burning periods. The concentrations of total PAHs accounting for a roughly 58% （34%） increment in the concentrations of total PAHs due to rice-straw burning. Combustion-related PAHs during burning periods were 1.54-2.57 times higher than those during non-burning periods. The mass median diameter （MMD） of 0.88-1.21 μm in the particulate phase suggested that rice-straw burning generated the increase in coarse particle number. Chemical mass balance （CMB） receptor model analyses showed that the primary pollution sources at the two sites were similar. However, ricestraw burning emission was specifically identified as a significant source of PAH during burning periods at the two sites. Open burning of rice straws was estimated to contribute approximately 6.3%-24.6% to total atmospheric PAHs at the two sites.

Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesized N-doped titanate nanotubes

Microwave-induced nitrogen-doped titanate nanotubes（NTNTs） were characterized by transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）, Zeta potential analysis,specific surface area（SBET）, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. TEM results indicate that NTNTs retain a tubular structure with a crystalline multiwall and have a length of several hundred nanometers after nitrogen doping. XRD findings demonstrate that the crystalline structure of NTNTs was dominated by anatase, which is favored for photocatalytic application. The Ti-O-N linkage observed in the XPS N 1s spectrum is mainly responsible for narrowing the band gap and eventually enhancing the visible light photoactivity. FT-IR results demonstrated the existence of H3O＋, which could be excited by photo-generated holes to form hydroxyl radicals and degrade environmental pollutants. After sintering at 350°C, the UV-Vis absorbance edges of NTNTs significantly shift to the visible-light region, which indicates N atom doping into the nanotubes. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B（RhB） via NTNTs show good efficiency, with pseudo first-order kinetic model rate constants of 3.7 × 10-3, 2.4 × 10-3and 8.0 × 10-4sec-1at pH 3, 7, and 11, respectively.

Rapid synthesis of Ti-MCM-41 by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method towards photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline

This study employed microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to synthesize Ti-MCM-41,which are mesoporous materials with a high surface area and excellent photocatalytic ability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy（UV–Vis） were employed. The XRD findings showed that Ti-MCM-41 exhibited a peak at 2θ of 2.2°, which was attributed to the hexagonal MCM-41 structure. The BET（Brunauer–Emmett–Teller） results agreed with the TEM findings that Ti-MCM-41 has a pore size of about 3–5 nm and a high surface area of 883 m-2/g. FTIR results illustrated the existence of Si–O–Si and Si–O–Ti bonds in Ti-MCM-41. The appearance of Ti2 p peaks in the XPS results confirmed the FTIR findings that the Ti was successfully doped into the MCM-41 structure. Zeta（ζ）-potential results indicated that the iso-electric point（IEP） of Ti-MCM-41 was at about pH 3.02. In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline（OTC） at different pH was investigated under Hg lamp irradiation（wavelength 365 nm）. The rate constant（K′obs） for OTC degradation was 0.012 min-1at pH 3. Furthermore, TOC（total organic carbon） and high resolution LC–MS（liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry） analyses were conducted to elucidate the possible intermediate products and degradation pathway for OTC. The TOC removal efficiency of OTC degradation was 87.0%, 74.4% and 50.9% at pH 3, 7 and 10, respectively. LC–MS analysis results showed that the degradation products from OTC resulted from the removal of functional groups from the OTC ring.

Comprehensive DNA barcode reference library and optimization of genetic divergence threshold facilitate the exploration of species diversity of green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae)

Chrysopidae are a family of Neuroptera of significant importance in biocontrol against agricultural pests because of their predatory larvae.Currently,the taxonomy of Chrysopidae lacks a comprehensive revision,which impedes the exploration of species diversity as well as the selection and the conservation of green lacewings as biocontrol agents.We have established a DNA barcode reference library of the Chinese green lacewings based on an approximately complete sampling(95.63%)in 25 of the 34 provincial regions in China,comprising 1119 barcodes of 25 genera and 197 species(representing 85%genera and 43.62%species from China).Combining other 1049 high quality green lacewing DNA barcodes,we first inferred the optimal threshold of interspecific genetic divergence(1.87%)for successful species identification in multiple simulated scenarios based on present data.We further inferred the threshold of genetic divergence(7.77%)among genera with biocontrol significance.The inference and performance of the threshold appears to be mainly associated with the completeness of sampling,the proportion of closely related species,and the analytical approaches.Six new combinations,Apertochrysa platypa(Yang&Yang,1991)comb.nov.,Apertochrysa shennongana(Yang&Wang,1990)comb.nov.,Apertochrysa pictifacialis(Yang,1988)comb.nov.,Apertochrysa helana(Yang,1993)comb.nov.,Plesiochrysa rosulata(Yang&Yang,2002)comb.nov.,and Signochrysa hainana(Yang&Yang,1991),are proposed according to integrative species delimitation.Our library and optimal threshold will effectively facilitate the exploration of species diversity of green lacewings.Our study also provides a methodological reference in molecular delimitation of other insects.

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas(PPGLs)cause symptoms by altering the circulation levels of catecholamines and peptide hormones.Currently,the diagnosis of PPGLs relies on diagnostic imaging and the detection of catecholamines.In this study,we used ultra-performance liquid chromatography(UPLC)/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(Q-TOF MS)analysis to identify and measure the perioperative differential metabolites in the plasma of adrenal pheochromocytoma patients.We identified differentially expressed genes by comparing the transcriptomic data of pheochromocytoma with the normal adrenal medulla.Through conducting two steps of metabolomics analysis,we identified 111 differential metabolites between the healthy group and the patient group,among which 53 metabolites were validated.By integrating the information of differential metabolites and differentially expressed genes,we inferred that the cysteine-methionine,pyrimidine,and tyrosine metabolism pathways were the three main metabolic pathways altered by the neoplasm.The analysis of transcription levels revealed that the tyrosine and cysteine-methionine metabolism pathways were downregulated in pheochromocytoma,whereas the pyrimidine pathway showed no significant difference.Finally,we developed an optimized diagnostic model of two metabolites,L-dihydroorotic acid and vanylglycol.Our results for these metabolites suggest that they may serve as potential clinical biomarkers and can be used to supplement and improve the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma.

Power Flow Analytical Solutions and Multi-dimensional Voltage Stability Boundaries Based on Multivariate Quotient-difference Method

This paper proposes a novel Multivariate Quotient-Difference(MQD)method to obtain the approximate analytical solution for AC power flow equations.Therefore,in the online environment,the power flow solutions covering different operating conditions can be directly obtained by plugging values into multiple symbolic variables,such that the power injections and consumptions of selected buses or areas can be independently adjusted.This method first derives a power flow solution through a Multivariate Power Series(MPS).Next,the MQD method is applied to transform the obtained MPS to a Multivariate Pad´e Approximants(MPA)to expand the Radius of Convergence(ROC),so that the accuracy of the derived analytical solution can be significantly increased.In addition,the hypersurface of the voltage stability boundary can be identified by an analytical formula obtained from the coefficients of MPA.This direct method for power flow solutions and voltage stability boundaries is fast for many online applications,since such analytical solutions can be derived offline and evaluated online by only plugging values into the symbolic variables according to the actual operating conditions.The proposed method is validated in detail on New England 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems with independent load variations in multi-regions.

Remote sensing image encryption algorithm utilizing 2D Logistic memristive hyperchaotic map and SHA-512

The two-dimensional Logistic memristive hyperchaotic map(2D-LMHM)and the secure hash SHA-512 are the foundations of the unique remote sensing image encryption algorithm(RS-IEA)suggested in this research.The proposed map is formed from the improved Logistic map and the memristor,which has wide phase space and hyperchaotic range and is exceptionally excellent to be utilized in specific applications.The proposed image algorithm uses the permutation-assignment-diffusion structure.Permutation generates two position matrices in a progressive manner to achieve an efficient random exchange of pixel positions,assignment is carried through on the image pixels of the permutated image to entirely remove the original image information,strengthening the relationship between permutation and diffusion,and loop diffusion in two different directions can use subtle changes of pixels to affect the whole plane.The random key and plain-image SHA-512 hash values are used to produce an additional key,which is then utilized to figure out the permutation parameters and the initial value of a chaotic map.The experimental results with the average NPCR=99.6094%(NPCR:number of pixels change rate),average UACI=33.4638%(UACI:unified average changing intensity),100%pass rate of the targets in the test set,the average correlation coefficient is 0.00075,and the local information entropy is 7.9025,which shows that the algorithm is able to defend against a variety of illegal attacks and provide more trustworthy protection than some of the existing state-of-the-art algorithms.
