An isotropic (+U) and anisotropic [+(U-J)] corrected Density Functional Theory study for bulk hematite (α-Fe2O3) was carried out,and several competing terminations of its (0001) surface modeled via slabs of increasing thickness from twelve to thirty-six Fe-layers.In spite of small quantitative differences,the use of either U or (U-J)corrections showed not to qualitatively affect the results of the simulations both for bulkα-Fe2O3and the lowestenergyα-Fe2O3(0001) surface studied,regardless of the thickness of the slab used.The energy favored antiferromagnetic ordering of bulkα-Fe2O3was preserved in the relaxed slabs,with the largest surface-induced effects limited to the outermost three Fe-layers in the slabs.Mixed O-and Fe-terminations were found to be energetically favored and insulating.Conversely,fully O-or Fe-terminated surfaces were calculated to be energetically disfavored and metallic.Finally,the role of Fe-or O-termination for the semiconducting or metallic nature as well as absolute band alignment ofα-Fe2O3(0001) surfaces was analyzed and discussed with respect to the challenges in enhancing the activity ofα-Fe2O3samples as photo-electrode for water splitting.

Previous simulations of photovoltaic devices are based on classical models,which neglect the atomistic details and quantum mechanical effects besides the dependence on many empirical parameters.Here,within the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism,a quantum mechanical method for the simulation of the performance of inorganic nanowire-based photovoltaic devices is presented[1].Based on the density-functional tight-binding theory,the method allows simulation of current-voltage characteristics and optical properties of photovoltaic devices without relying on empirical parameters.Numerical studies of silicon nanowire-based devices of realistic sizes with more than ten thousand atoms are performed and the results indicate that atomistic details and non-equilibrium conditions have clear impact on the photoresponse of the devices.

Petrographic and Geochemical Characteristics of the Granitoids in the South of Godé (North of the Square Degree of Léo-Burkina Faso, West Africa)

South of Godé, in the central-western region of Burkina Faso, granitoids of Paleoproterozoic age are similar to those of the Man/Leo shield. This study focused on the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of these granitoids, with the following results: 1) The tonalite that outcrops in the south-west of the study area belongs to the TTG group or first generation granitoids. They are most often ribboned at outcrop and have a geochemical signature close to that of Archean TTGs. Tonalite has a metaluminous character and the REE spectrum indicates that it may be derived from partial melting of basic magmatic rocks. 2) Biotite granites have no outcrop structure. They are weakly metaluminous to peraluminous and potassic to highly potassic. Their rare earth spectra indicate that they may be derived from the partial melting of TTG granitoids. 3) Geotectonic diagrams show that the granitoids studied to the south of Godé were emplaced in an active tectonic context similar to that of present-day subduction zones.

The Pouni area is made up of basalts belonging to the Boromo belt, lamprophyres and granitoids. These geological formations are similar to geological formations of the same type in other regions of the Palaeoproterozoic domain of the Man/Leo shield. This study, which focused on the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of these geological formations, led to the following main conclusions: The lamprophyres are basic plutonic rocks that cut through other geological formations. The basalt belongs to the northern part of the Borormo belt and is thought to be a relic of overthickened oceanic plateaus. There are two groups of granitoid rocks. The granodiorite has a geochemical signature close to that of Archean TTGs and is metaluminous in character. It has a low potassium content. The minor element and rare earth element spectra indicate that it could be derived from partial melting of basic magmatic rocks. Biotite granites are peraluminous and highly potassic. Minor element contents and rare earth spectra indicate that they could be derived from partial melting of felsic materials. Geotectonic diagrams show that the granitoids identified in the Pouni zone were emplaced in an active tectonic context, similar to that of present-day subduction zones.

This study, carried out in the Léo square degree (west-central Burkina Faso) in the Palaeoproterozoic domain of the Man/Léo ridge, aims to define the shapes and positions of granitic plutons and the organisation of deformation structures using aeromagnetic data. These data have shown that there are small sub-circular granitic bodies to the north of the granitic masses in this region, and a large sub-circular granitic body to the south, around which are other smaller granitic bodies. The lineament map shows that the deformation structures are organised along three main directions and largely form these sub-circular plutonic bodies. We suggest that the granitic plutons are coalescent, pending identification of the internal structures of these granites to further refine the geodynamic model.

Case Study for Undetermined Mosquito Species by Polymerase Chain Reaction in Western Burkina Faso

Introduction: Malaria eradication campaigns all over the world are largely based on parasite and vector control. Vector identification, whether morphological or molecular, is an essential component of vector control. This study analyzed the possible causes of indeterminate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results for mosquito species in Western part of Burkina Faso. Methodology: From July 2021 to November 2021, mosquitoes were collected during the period of high malaria transmission in the village of Séguéré, Houet province, Burkina Faso, and morphologically identified. After DNA extraction, samples were amplified by sine 200× PCR to identify species of the Anopheles gambiae complex. Indeterminate samples were then selected for further analysis. The parameters studied were: DNA dilution, the effect of protocol adjusting, and the type of protocol used. Results: A total of 130 “indeterminate” DNAs diluted 1:10 were analyzed. After dilution, the mean amount was 14.73 ± 3.59 ng/μL and absorbance 1.71 ± 0.1. PCR chain reaction yielded 94.62% (123/130) anopheline species in SINE PCR, 5.38% (7/130) “negative”. A significant difference between SINE PCR before dilution and after dilution was observed (P < 0.001). Identification tests carried out using other protocols gave no positive results. From these results, we note that the adaptation of the protocol significantly reduced the polymerase amplification results of the species. Conclusion: It is therefore necessary to respect the amplification protocols. However, the persistence of “indeterminate” results suggests that further studies should be carried out to shed more light on the subject.

Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are vesicular bodies that bud off from the cell membrane or are secreted virtually by all cell types.Small EVs(sEVs or exosomes)are key mediators of cell-cell communication by delivering their cargo,including proteins,lipids,or RNAs,to the recipient cells where they induce changes in signaling pathways and phenotypic prop-erties.Tangible findings have revealed the pivotal involve-ment of sEVs in the pathogenesis of various diseases.On the bright side,they are rich sources of biomarkers for diag-nosis,prognosis,treatment response,and disease monitor-ing.sEVs have high stability,biocompatibility,targetability,low toxicity,and are immunogenic in nature.Their intrinsic properties make sEVs an ideal delivery vehicle to be loaded with cargo for therapeutic interventions.Liver diseases are a major global health problem.This review aims to focus on the roles and mechanisms of sEVs in the pathogenesis of liver diseases,liver injury,liver failure,and liver can-cer.sEVs are released not only by hepatocytes but also by stromal and immune cells in the microenvironment.Early detection of liver disease determines the chance for cura-tive treatment and high survival of patients.This review focuses on the potential of circulating sEV cargo as specific and sensitive noninvasive biomarkers for the early detection and prognosis of liver diseases.In addition,the therapeutic use of sEVs derived from various cell types is discussed.Al-though sEVs hold promise for clinical applications,there are still challenges to be overcome by further research to bring utilization of sEVs into clinical practice.

Diastasis of the symphysis pubis is a rare postpartum complication. We report two cases of symphysis diastasis after dystocic delivery, in two patients who presented in the postpartum period with functional impotence, pubalgia and acute urine retention. A frontal radiograph of the pelvis confirmed the diagnosis, showing a symphyseal separation of 12 mm and 18 mm. In our case, management was mainly medical, with a favorable clinical outcome.

Blood Pressure Profile and Glycemic Control of Type 2 Diabetics and Hypertensives at the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital: A Review of 116 Cases

Objective: The association hypertension and diabetes is important. The two pathologies may influence each other. The aim was to study the correlation between glycemic control and blood pressure control and to determine the factors associated with blood pressure control. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with an analytical focus over 7 months. Patients were recruited as outpatients and all underwent ambulatory blood pressure measure, glycated hemoglobin and creatinine measurements, and assessment of compliance with treatment. Results: During this period 116 patients were collected. The predominance was female 69%. The mean age of the patients was 62 ± 7 years with a peak between 60 and 70 years. The average age of hypertension was 12 years and that of diabetes 6 1/2 years. The most frequently associated cardiovascular risk factor was a sedentary lifestyle (71.5%) after age. 57.8% of patients were not controlled at the office, with a predominance of systolic hypertension (58.2%). 61.6% of patients were controlled by ambulatory blood pressure measure, a rate of 47.8% of white coat hypertension. Glycemic control was observed in 42.2% of cases and 87% of patients had good renal function (glomerular filter rate ≥ 60 ml/mn). Therapeutic compliance was good in 53.4% of cases and dual therapy was the most used therapeutic modality 44.8% (52 patients) followed by triple therapy. The factors associated with poor blood pressure control were glycemic imbalance, non-compliance and monotherapy. Dual therapy had a protective effect. Conclusion: The association of hypertension and type 2 diabetes is frequent. The risk of occurrence increases with age. Ambulatory blood pressure measure is the best method to assess blood pressure control. Optimization of blood pressure control should also include optimization of glycemic control.
