AIM:To compare the presentation and impact on qual-ity of life of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)in old and young age ***:Data from adult patients with GERD di-agnosed by endoscopic and symptomic characteristics were collected between January and November *** criteria included combined peptic ulcers,ma-lignancy,prior surgery,antacid medication for more than 2 mo,and *** patients were assigned to the elderly group if they were 65 years or older,or the younger group if they were under 65 *** had completed the GERD impact scale,the chinese GERD questionnaire,and the SF-36 *** from other cases without endoscopic f ind-ings or symptoms were collected and these subjects comprised the control group in our ***:There were 111 patients with GERD and 44 normal cases:78(70.3%)and 33 patients(29.7%)were in the younger and elderly groups,*** were more female patients(60.3%)in the younger group,and more males(72.7%)in the elderly *** younger cases had more severe and fre-quent typical symptoms than the elderly ***-nif icantly more impairment of daily activities was noted in the younger patients compared with the elderly group,except for physical ***:Elderly patients with GERD were pre-dominantly male with rare presentation of typical symp-toms,and had less impaired quality of life compared with younger patients in a chinese population.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between transcatheterarterial embolization (TAE) and pulmonary metastasis insubjects with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: A total of 287 patients with HCC followed upfor more than 1 week were included. 102 patients underwenttranscatheter arterial embolization (TAE group) and 185received conservative treatment(control group). Thepatients' chest x-rays and chest CT scans were examinedfor pulmonary ***: Patients with TAE had a median survival of 19.3months while that of the control group was only 10.0 months(P＜0.05). Pulmonary metastasis occurred in 14 (13.7 %)patients in the TAE group and 14 (7.6 %) patients in the control group, there was no significant difference (P＞0.05).The 1-year, 2-year and 5-year cumulative incidence of pulmonary metastasis was 11.8 %, 17.6 % and 24.0 % in the TAE group and 7.0 %, 13.0 % and 21.7 % in the control group, respectively (P＞0.05). On the univariate analysis,tumor size, abnormal serum alanine aminotransferase levels and heterogeneity on sonography were significantly associated with pulmonary metastasis. However, on the multivariate analysis, only tumor size was significantly predictive of pulmonary ***: TAE is effective on prolonging survival of patients with HCC. It does not significantly increase the risk of pulmonary metastasis. Tumor size is the only significant predictive factor associated with lung metastasis.

A 10 m long,0.2 m wide flume was employed to simulate the channel bed evolution of check-dam *** experiment longitudinal profiles,the gradient of channel bed,head-cutting propagation distance and deposition length were compared with the theoretical solution derived from a sediment transport diffusion *** contrast with the theoretical solution,two different gradients were obtained upstream and downstream of the *** theoretical solution provides a good description of the changes upstream of the check-dam. The ratio of clear water depth to sediment moving layer thickness in the experiment was analyzed and showed that high concentration sediment laden flow was taken in the incipient of check-dam failure,which may be the reason why the experiment result was slightly different from the theoretical solution in the downstream of check-dam.

Protein succinylation is a biochemical reaction in which a succinyl group(-CO-CH2-CH2-CO-)is attached to the lysine residue of a protein *** succinylation plays important regulatory roles in living ***,studies in this field are limited by the difficulty in experimentally identifying the substrate site specificity of lysine *** facilitate this process,several tools have been proposed for the computational identification of succinylated lysine *** this study,we developed an approach to investigate the substrate specificity of lysine succinylated sites based on amino acid *** experimentally verified lysine succinylated sites collected from public resources,the significant differences in position-specific amino acid composition between succinylated and non-succinylated sites were represented using the Two Sample Logo *** findings enabled the adoption of an effective machine learning method,support vector machine,to train a predictive model with not only the amino acid composition,but also the composition of k-spaced amino acid *** the selection of the best model using a ten-fold crossvalidation approach,the selected model significantly outperformed existing tools based on an independent dataset manually extracted from published research ***,the selected model was used to develop a web-based tool,SuccSite,to aid the study of protein *** proteins were used as case studies on the website to demonstrate the effective prediction of succinylation *** will regularly update SuccSite by integrating more experimental *** is freely accessible at http://***/SuccSite/.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between breast cancer and fatty liver in chinese ***: The study group consisted of 217 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancers and the control group of 182 subjects undergoing routine health examination in the same hospital. All subjects were female and the groups were matched for date of study. Ultrasound scanning was performed by the same operator using a 3.5 mHz *** of the liver was diagnosed based on the criteria of Saverymuttu et al. Clinical variables were statistically ***: Fatty liver was diagnosed in 98 patients of the study group and 37 patients of the control group, a significant difference was found in incidence (98/217, 45.2 % and 37/182, 20.3 %; P＜0.0001). On univariate analysis, fatty liver in breast cancer patients was associated with overweight,hyperlipidemia, and hepatitis. On multivariate analysis in the same patients, obesity and hyperlipidemia were significantly associated with fatty ***: The cause of fatty liver in women with breast cancer may be multifactorial. The present study confirms its link with overweight and hyperlipidemia.

AIM: To evaluate systematically our nine-year experience in treating right-sided diverticulitis of the colon, and to explore its clinical and radiological ***: The clinical and radiological data of 40 patients with colonic diverticulitis treated in Mackay Memorial Hospital,Taipei, from 1993 through 2002 were reviewed ***: The average age of the patients with right-sided diverticulitis was 53.1 years, which was 11.6 years younger than that of the patients with left-sided diverticulitis. The preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis was made in 8 of 13 right-sided diverticulitis patients. Nine (69 %) had right lower quadrant abdominal pain for more than 48 hours, and ten patients (77 %) presented with fever. CT findings suggesting acute right-sided diverticulitis including thickening of the intestinal wall and pericolonic inflammation were present in five ***: Right-sided diverticulitis is easily confused with acute appendicitis because it occurs at a somewhat younger age than that in left-sided diverticulitis. Barium enema and CT are helpful for the early diagnosis of rightsided diverticulitis. While clearly not required in the majority of patients with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, barium enema and CT may be helpful in making the decision with a clinical history or physical examinations atypical of acute appendicitis.

The multifactorial and multistage pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)has fascinated a wide spectrum of scientists for *** a number of major risk factors have been identified,their mechanistic roles in hepatocarcinogenesis still need to be *** tumor suppressor genes(TSGs)have been identified as being involved in *** TSGs can be classified into two groups depending on the situation with respect to allelic mutation/loss in the tumors:the recessive TSGs with two required mutated alleles and the haploinsufficient TSGs with one required mutated *** B virus(HBV)is one of the most important risk factors associated with *** mice cannot be infected with HBV due to the narrow host range of HBV and the lack of a proper receptor,one advantage of mouse models for HBV/HCC research is the numerous and powerfulgenetic tools that help investigate the phenotypic effects of viral proteins and allow the dissection of the dose-dependent action of ***,we mainly focus on the application of mouse models in relation to HBV-associated HCC and on TSGs that act either in a recessive or in a haploinsufficient *** obtained using mouse models will have a great impact on HCC translational medicine.
