Performance of ground penetrating radar in root detection and its application in root diameter estimation under controlled conditions

A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

Automated electron temperature fitting of Langmuir probeⅠ-Ⅴtrace in plasmas with multiple Maxwellian EEDFs

An algorithm for automated fitting of the effective electron temperature from a planar Langmuir probe I-V trace taken in a plasma with multiple Maxwellian electron populations is developed through MATLAB *** code automatically finds a fitting range suitable for analyzing the temperatures of each of the electron *** algorithm is used to analyzeⅠ-Ⅴtraces from both the Institute of Plasma Physics chinese Academy of Sciences's Diagnostic Test Source device and a similar multi-dipole chamber at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Ⅰ-Ⅴtraces reconstructed from the parameters fitted by the algorithm not only agree with the measured I-V trace but also reveal physical properties consistent with those found in previous *** probe traces are also analyzed with the algorithm and it is shown that the major source of error in such attempts is the disruption of the inflection point due to both decreased signal-to-noise ratio and greater sheath *** is thus recommended to use planar probes with radii much greater than the plasma Debye length when signal-to-noise ratio is poor.

Iatrogenic aortic dissection （IAD） is a rare complication of percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） with an estimated incidence of 0.02%--0.04%. lAD occurs more frequently in the setting of urgent PCI for acute myocardial infarction （AMI）（0.19%） than for elective procedures （0.01%）.[11 The mortality risk associated with IAD is high （16%） and is comparable to that for spontaneous aortic dissection （16%）.Urgent surgery is the treatment of choice for extensive dissection or hemodynamic instability. In this report, we present a case of severe IAD that was managed conservatively with good clinical outcome.

Prognostic factors of survival and a new scoring system for liver resection of colorectal liver metastasis

BACKGROUND Hepatic resection has become the preferred treatment of choice for colorectal liver metastasis(CLM)*** To identify the prognostic factors and to formulate a new scoring system for management of *** Clinicopathologic and long-term survival data were analyzed to identify the significant predictors of survival by univariate and multivariate analyses with the Cox model.A clinical score was constructed based on the analysis *** Three factors of worse overall survival were identified in the multivariate *** were number of liver metastases≥5,size of the largest liver lesion≥4 cm,and the presence of nodal metastasis from the primary *** three factors were chosen as criteria for a clinical risk score for overall *** clinical score highly correlated with median overall survival and 5-year survival(P=0.002).CONCLUSION Priority over surgical resection should be given to the lowest score groups,and alternative oncological treatment should be considered in patients with the highest score.
