Analysis of a landfill cover without geomembrane using varied particle sizes of recycled concrete

Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of a novel three-layer landfill cover system constructed with recycled concrete aggregates(RCAs)without geomembrane in both laboratory and ***,no systematic investigation has been carried out to optimize the combination of the particle sizes for fine-grained RCAs(FRC)and coarse-grained RCAs(CRC)that can be used for the three-layer landfill cover *** aim of this paper is to assist engineers in designing the three-layer landfill cover system under a rainfall of 100-year return period in humid climate conditions using an easily controlled soil parameter D10 of *** numerical study reveals that when D10 of FRC increases from 0.05 mm to 0.16 mm,its saturated permeability increases by 10 *** a result,a larger amount of rainwater infiltrates into the cover system,causing a higher lateral diversion in both the top FRC and middle CRC *** further changes in the lateral diversion are observed when the D10 value of FRC is larger than 0.16 *** the particle sizes of FRC and CRC layers are shown to have a minor influence on the percolation under the extreme rainfall *** implies that the selection of particle sizes for the FRC and CRC layers can be based on the availability of *** it is well known that the bottom layer of the cover system should be constructed with very fine-grained soils if possible,this study provides an upper limit to the particle size that can be used in the bottom layer(D10 not larger than 0.02 mm).With this limit,the three-layer system can still minimize the water percolation to meet the design criterion(30 mm/yr)even under a 100-year return period of rainfall in humid climates.

Hepatocellular Tumors:Immunohistochemical Analyses for Classification and Prognostication

Following the classification of hepatocellular nodules by the International Working Party in 1995 and further elaboration by the International Consensus Group for Hepatocellular Neoplasia in 2009, entities under the spectrum of hepatocellular nodules have been better characterized. Research work hence has been done to answer questions such as distinguishing high-grade dysplastic nodules from early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), delineating the tumor cell origin of HCC, identifying its prognostic markers, and subtyping hepatocellular adenomas. As a result, a copious amount of data at immunohistochemical and molecular levels has emerged. A panel of immunohistochemical markers including glypican-3, heat shock protein 70 and glutamine synthetase has been found to be of use in the diagnosis of small, well differentiated hepatocellular tumors and particularly of HCC. The use of liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), β-catenin, glutamine synthetase, serum amyloid protein and C-reactive protein is found to be helpful in the subtyping of hepatocellular adenomas. The role of tissue biomarkers for prognostication in HCC and the use of biomarkers in subclassifying HCC based on tumor cell origin are also discussed.

High-Resolution Infrared-Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoion and Pulsed Field Ionization-Photoelectron Methods for Spectroscopic Studies of Neutrals and Cations

We show that by scanning the frequency of a single mode infrared （IR） optical parametric oscillator （IR- OPO） laser to excite the molecular species of interest and fixing the frequency of a vacuum ultraviolet （VUV） laser to photoionize the IR excited species, high-resolution IR spectra of polyatomic neutrals can be obtained with high sensitivity. The fact that this IR-VUV-photoion （IR-VUV-PI） method is based on VUV photoionization probe, and thus, allows the identification of the neutral IR absorber, makes it applicable for IR spectroscopy measurements of isotopemers, radicals, and clusters, which usually exist as impure samples. The highly resolved IR-VUV-PI measurements achieved using the single mode IR-OPO laser have made possible the selection of single rovibrational states of CH3X （X=Br and I）, C2H4, and C3H4 for VUV-pulsed field ionization-photoelectron （VUV-PFI-PE） measurements, resulting in rovibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra for these polyatomic molecules. These experiments show that the signal- to-noise ratios of the IR-VUV-PI and IR-VUV-PFI-PE spectra obtained by employing the high-resolution IR-OPO laser are significantly higher than those observed in previous IR-VUV-PI and IR-VUV-PFI-PE studies using a low-resolution IR-OPO laser. Further improvement in sensitivity of IR-VUV-PI and IR- VUV-PFI-PE measurements by using the collinear arrangement of IR-VUV lasers and molecular beam is discussed.

Overnight pulse oximetry for screening of obstructive sleep apnea in at-risk adult patients in the primary care setting:prospective case series

Impact of microbiota on female fertility and gynecological problems

The uterus was previously considered a sterile environment for embryo implantation and fetal growth; however, evidence showed that different microorganisms in the female reproductive tract may regulate human fertility. TheLactobacillus family is among the most prevalent bacteria in the vagina and uterus of the female reproductive system. Interestingly, aLactobacillus-dominated (LD) uterine environment is associated with better pregnancy outcomes. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which an LD environment improves pregnancy outcomes is unknown. In the uterus, many commensal bacteria (eg,Bifidobacterium, Prevotella,Enterobacter,Streptococcus, andStaphylococcus) produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, butyrate, and propionate. SCFAs are crucial in modulating cytokine production (eg, IL-6 and IL-10) and immune cell populations (eg, T cells and macrophages) during embryo implantation and gynecological diseases. This minireview provides an overview of the roles of lactobacilli and SCFAs in female fertility and related diseases.

Quantum State-to-State Vacuum Ultraviolet Photodissociation Dynamics of Small Molecules

The present review focused on selected, recent experimental progress of photodissociation dynamics of small molecules covering the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) range from 6 eV to 20 eV. These advancements come about due to the available laser based VUV light sources along with the developments of advanced experimental techniques, including the velocitymap imaging (VMI), H-atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight (HRTOF) techniques, as well as the two-color tunable VUV-VUV laser pump-probe detection method. The applications of these experimental techniques have allowed VUV photodissociation studies of many diatomic and triatomic molecules to quantum state-to-state in detail. To highlight the recent accomplishments, we have summarized the results on several important molecular species, including H2 (D2, HD), CO, N2, NO, O2, H2O (D2O, HOD), CO2, and N2O. The detailed VUV photodissociation studies of these molecules are of astrochemical and atmospheric relevance. Since molecular photodissociation initiated by VUV excitation is complex and is often governed by multiple electronic potential energy surfaces, the unraveling of the complex dissociation dynamics requires state-to-state cross section measurements. The newly constructed Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS), which is capable of generating coherent VUV radiation with unprecedented brightness in the range of 50-150 nm, promises to propel the photodissociation experiment to the next level.
