Prophylactic effects of sialylated glycopeptides from edible bird’s nest on neuroinflammation in lipopolysaccharide-treated mice via the gut-brain axis

Edible bird’s nest (EBN)， abundant in sialic acid (SA) has been recognized as a natural substance beneficial to brain development and cognitive ability. In order to investigate active component of EBN， sialylated glycopeptides (SCP) were extracted from EBN by 60% ethanol after trypsin hydrolysis and its effects on central nervous system was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation mice. EBN， SCP， and SA pretreatment and intervention reduced IL-1β， TNF-α， and IL-6 levels in hippocampus and cortex， meanwhile inhibited the activation of microglia， astrogliosis and neuron apoptosis， which were consistent with the learning and memory improvement and anti-depression effects in behavioral tests. The counts of leukocytes， neutrophils and monocytes， as well as IL-1β， TNF-α， and IL-6 levels in peripheral circulation were significantly reduced by SCP. Results of plasma metabolomics suggested SCP up-regulated energy metabolism， promoted the recovery of primary and secondary bile acid metabolism and indole metabolism， where microbiota may involve. 16S rDNA sequencing of colonic contents showed EBN， SCP and SA repaired dysbacteriosis in LPS-treated mice by significantly up-regulating the anti-inflammatory Muribaculaceae and inhibiting pro-inflammatory related Desulfovibrio and Candidatus＿Saccharimonas. In addition， both EBN and SCP could significantly enrich ***， while SA could specifically enrich Prevotellaceae＿UCG＿001. The gut-brain axis was preliminarily established， and SCP may have the potential to be a functional factor for neuroprotection applied in EBN industry.

Awareness of Age-related Macular Degeneration and Its Ris Factors among Beijing Residents in China

Background： Age-related macular degeneration （AMD） is a major cause of irreversible blindness, and awareness of this disease is important in the prevention of blindness. However, lack of public awareness of AMD was sbown in previous studies, and there was no report of AMD awareness in the Mainland of China. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the awareness of AMD and its risk factors among Beijing residents in China. Methods： A cross-sectional, computer-assisted, telephone investigation was conducted to measure the awareness of AMD among Beijing residents. All the contacts of potential respondents were randomly generated by computer. Only those above 18 years of age and willing to participate in the study were included. The questionnaire for the study was moditied from the AMD Alliance International Global Report. Pearson＇s Chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were used to identify the factors that affected the knowledge of AMD. Results： Among 385 Beijing residents who agreed to participale, the awareness of AMD was 6.8%, far below than that of cataract and glaucoma. Participants who were above 30 years of age （odds ratio [OR] 6.17, confidence interval [el] 1.44-26.57）, with experience of health-related work （OR 8.11, CI3.25-20.27）, and whose relatives/friends or themselves suffering from AMD （OR 32.18, CI11.29-91.68） had better AMD awareness. Among those familiar with AMD, only 35% of them identified smoking as a risk factor, and only 23.1% of the residents believed that smoking could lead to blindness. Conclusions： The sample of Chinese population had limited knowledge of AMD. Educational programs need to be carried out to raise public awareness of AMD.

Characterization of Fe-containing particles in chengdu,southwest China,using single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry

Single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry was used to study the characteristics of Fecontaining particles during winter in chengdu,southwest *** mass concentrations of PM_(2.5)and PM_(10)during the study period were 64±38 and 89±49μg/m~3,respectively,and NO_(2)and particulate matter were high compared with most other regions of *** Fecontaining particles were divided into seven categories with different mass spectra,sources and aging *** highest contribution was from Fe mixed with carbonaceous components(Fe-C,23.1%)*** was more mixed with sulfate than nitrate and therefore the contribution of Fe mixed with sulfate(Fe-S,20.7%)particles was higher than that of Fe mixed with nitrate(Fe-N,12.5%)*** contributions from Fe-containing particles related to primary combustion were high in the small particle size range,whereas aged Fecontaining particles and dust-related particles were mostly found in the coarse particle size *** air masses mainly originated from the west and east of chengdu,and the corresponding PM_(2.5)concentrations were 79±36 and 55±36μg/m~3,*** west and east air masses showed stronger contributions of Fe-containing particles related to biomass burning(Fe-B)and fossil fuel combustion(Fe-C and Fe-S)particles,*** southwest area contributed the most Fe-containing *** assessments of the effects of Fe-containing particles during heavy pollution period should pay more attention to Fe-C and Fe-S ***-reduction of Fe-containing particles should consider both local emissions and short-distance transmission from the surrounding areas.

First total synthesis of 10α-hydroxy-4-muurolen-3-one and its C_(10)-isomer

An efficient synthetic route to muurolane type sesquiterpenes starting from （R）-carvone, employing allylic diazene rearrangement and the ring closing methesis （RCM） reaction as key steps, is described. The first asymmetric total synthesis of （-）-10α- hydroxy-4-muurolen-3-one 11 and （-）-10β-hydroxy-4-muurolen-3-one C was accomplished. Through the total synthesis, the absolute configurations of the natural products A, B and C were established.

A simple and efficient synthesis of the valsartan

Valsartan 1, one of the most important agents used in antihypertensive therapy today, was synthesized starting from L-valin methyl ester hydrochloride 2 through four steps in an overall yield of 60%. The key step involves the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling. This method overcomes many of the drawbacks associated with the previously reported syntheses and is more suitable for industrial production.
