It is.a challenge to make thorough but efficient ex.erimental des.gns.for the coupled mineral dis.olution and precipitation s.udies.in a multi-mineral s.s.em, becaus. it is.difficult to s.eculate the bes. ex.erimental duration, optimal s.mpling s.hedule, effects.of different ex.erimental conditions. and how to max.mize the ex.erimental outputs.prior to the actual ex.eriments. Geochemical modeling is.an efficient and effective tool to as.is. the ex.erimental des.gn by virtually running all s.enarios.of interes. for the s.udied s.s.em and predicting the ex.erimental outcomes. Here we demons.rated an ex.mple of geochemical modeling as.is.ed ex.erimental des.gn of coupled labradorite dis.olution and calcite and clayey mineral precipitation us.ng multiple is.tope tracers. In this.s.udy, labradorite(plagioclas.) was.chos.n as.the reactant becaus. it is.both a major component and one of the mos. reactive minerals.in bas.lt. Following our is.tope doping s.udies.of s.ngle minerals.in the las. ten years. initial s.lutions.in the s.mulations.were doped withmultiple is.topes.e.g., Ca and s.). Geochemical modeling res.lts.s.ow that the us. of is.tope tracers.gives.us.orders.of magnitude more s.ns.tivity than the conventional method bas.d on concentrations.and allows.us.to decouple dis.olution and precipitation reactions.at near-equilibrium condition. The s.mulations.s.gges. that the precis. unidirectional dis.olution rates.can inform us.which rate laws.plagioclas. dis.olution has.followed. Calcite precipitation occurred at near-equilibrium and the multiple is.tope tracer ex.eriments.would provide near-equilibrium precipitation rates. which was.a challenge for the conventional concentration-bas.d ex.eriments. In addition, whether the precipitation of clayey phas.s.is.the rate-limiting s.ep in s.me multi-mineral s.s.ems.will be revealed.
