AIM： To investigate dose-response and time-course of the effects of ethanol on the cell viability and antioxidant capacity in isolated rat hepatocytes. METHODS： Hepatocytes were isolated from male adult Wistar rats and seeded into 100-mm dishes. Hepatocytes were treated with ethanol at concentrations between 0 （C）, 10 （E10）, 50 （E50）, and 100 （E100） mmol/L （dose response） for 12, 24, and 36 h （time course）. Then, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） leakage, malondialdehyde （IDA） concentration, glutathione （GSH） level, and activities of glutathione peroxidase （GPX）, glutathione reductase （GRD）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, and catalase （CAT） were measured. RESULTS： Our data revealed that LDH leakage was significantly increased by about 30% in group E100 over those in groups C and E10 at 24 and 36 h, The HDA concentration in groups C, E10 and E50 were significantly lower than that in group E100 at 36 h. Furthermore, the concentration of IDA in group E100 at 36 h was significantly higher by 4.5- and 1.7-fold, respectively, than that at 12 and 24 h. On the other hand, the GSH level in group E100 at 24 and 36 h was significantly decreased, by 32% and 28%, respectively, compared to that at 12 h. The activities of GRD and CAT in group E100 at 36 h were significantly less than those in groups C and E10. However, The GPX and SOD activities showed no significant change in each group. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that longtime incubation with higher concentration of ethanol （100 mmol/L） decreased the cell viability by means of reducing GRD and CAT activities and increasing lipid peroxidation.

AIM:To conduct a bacterial culture study for monitoring decontamination of automated endoscope reprocessors(AERs) after high-level disinfection(HLD).METHODS:From February 2006 to January 2011,authors conducted randomized consecutive sampling each month for 7 *** collected a total of 420 swab cultures,including 300 cultures from 5 gastroscope AERs,and 120 cultures from 2 colonoscope *** cultures were obtained from the residual water from the AERs after a full reprocessing *** were cultured to test for aerobic bacteria,anaerobic bacteria,and mycobacterium ***:The positive culture rate of the AERs was 2.0%(6/300) for gastroscope AERs and 0.8%(1/120) for colonoscope *** the positive cultures,including 6 from gastroscope and 1 from colonoscope AERs,showed monofloral *** the gastroscopeAER samples,50%(3/6) were colonized by aerobic bacterial and 50%(3/6) by fungal ***:A full reprocessing cycle of an AER with HLD is adequate for disinfection of the *** culture is a useful method for monitoring AER decontamination after each reprocessing *** contamination of AERs after reprocessing should also be kept in mind.

Since the relationship between angiogenesis and tumor growth was established by Folkman in 1971, scientists have made efforts exploring the possibilities in treating cancer by targeting angiogenesis. Inhibition of angiogenesis growth factors and administration of angiogenesis inhibitors are the basics of anti- angiogenesis therapy. Transfer of anti-angiogenesis genes has received attention recently not only because of the advancement of recombinant vectors, but also because of the localized and sustained expression of therapeutic gene product inside the tumor after gene transfer. This review provides the up-to-date information about the strategies and the vectors studied in the field of anti-angiogenesis cancer gene therapy.

Conflicting findings exist regarding the link between functional recovery and the regrowth of spinal tracts across the lesion leading to the restoration of functional contacts. In the present study, we investigated whether functional locomotor recovery was attributable to anatomical regeneration at postnatal day 1 （PN1）, PN7, PN14 and in adult rats two months after transection injury at the tenth thoracic segment of the spinal cord. The Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores showed that transection led to a failure of hindlimb locomotor function in PN14 and adult rats. However, PN1 and PN7 rats showed a significant level of stepping function after complete spinal cord transection. Unexpectedly, unlike the transected PN14 and adult rats in which the spinal cord underwent limited secondary degeneration and showed a scar at the lesion site, the rats transected at PN1 and PN7 showed massive secondary degeneration both anterograde and retrograde, leaving a 〉5-mm gap between the two stumps. Furthermore, retrograde tracing with fluorogold （FG） also showed that FG did not cross the transection site in PN1 and PN7rats as in PN14 and adult rats, and re-transection of the cord caused no apparent loss in locomotor performance in the rats transected at PN1. Thus, these three lines of evidence strongly indicated that the functional recovery after transection in neonatal rats is independent of regrowth of spinal tracts across the lesion site. Our results support the notion that the recovery of locomotor function in developing rats may be due to intrinsic adaptations in the spinal circuitry below the lesion that control hindlimb locomotor activity rather than the regrowth of spinal tracts across the lesion. The difference in secondary degeneration between neonatal and adult rats remains to be explored.

Two new compounds, oleanolic acid 28-O--D-glucopyranosyl-3-O--L-arabinopyrano- syl-(13)-(6-butyl ester)--D-glucuropyranoside 1, oleanolic acid 28-O--D-glucopyranosyl- (16)--D-glucopyranoside 2 have been isolated from the roots of Hemsleya penxianensis var. gulinensis. Their structures were determined on the bases of the spectral and chemical evidences.

The variability in global oceanic evaporation data sets was examined for the period 1988-2000. These data sets are satellite estimates based on bulk aerodynamic formulations and include the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Satellite-based Surface Turbulent Flux version 2 （ GSSTF2）, the Japanese-ocean flux using remote sensing observations （J-OFURO）, and the Hamburg Ocean-Atmosphere Parameters and Fluxes from Satellite version 2 （HOAPS2）. The National Center for Environmental Prediction （NCEP） reanalysis is also included for comparison. An increase in global average surface latent heat flux （SLHF） can be observed in all the data sets. Empirical mode decomposition （EMD） shows long-term increases that started around 1990 for all remote sensing data sets. The effect of Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991 is clearly evident in HOAPS2 but is independent of the longterm increase. linear regression analyses show increases of 9.4%, 13.0%, 7. 3%, and 3.9% for GSSTF2, J-OFURO, HOAPS2 and NCEP, for the periods of the data sets. Empirical orthogonal function （EOF） analyses show that the pattern of the first EOF of all data sets is consistent with a decadal variation associated with the enhancement of the tropical Hadley circulation, which is supported by other satellite observations. The second EOF of all four data sets is an ENSO mode, and the correlations between their time series and an SO1 are 0.74, 0.71,0.59, and 0.61 for GSSTF2, J-OFURO, HOAPS2, and NCEP in that order. When the Hadley modes are removed from the remote sensing data, the residue global increases are reduced to 2.2% , 7. 3%, and 〈 1% for GSSTF2, J-OFURO and HOAPS, respectively. If the ENSO mode is used as a calibration standard for the data sets, the Hadley mode is at least comparable to, if not larger than, the ENSO mode during our study period.
