The impact of serving in disaster relief among volunteers in Malaysia

Purpose:Malaysian disaster relief volunteers have a long and proud history of participating in relief missions within and outside the *** of a plethora of researches into the various areas of disaster relief,there has been a little scholarly activity looking into the experiences of the medical volunteers worldwide and even less research on the experiences of the relief volunteers in ***,the purpose of this study is to identify the effect of disaster relief works on volunteers in ***:This is a non-experimental cross-sectional design study,which was conducted using survey questionnaire to examine the incidence of burnout,posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD)symptoms and the quality of life(QOL)among the disaster relief *** the study also examined the sociodemographic variables of the *** addition,the association between the sociodemographic variable and the preferred coping strategies was also investigated through self-reporting ***:The findings of this study revealed that 90.9%volunteers(n=312)experienced some levels of recurring stress throughout their lives,which led to ***,96.8%(n=332)of the participants were categorized as having at least some symptoms of ***,self-reporting QOL measurements indicated that the participants are,in general,satisfied with their *** associations between the incidence of burnout,incidence of PTSD and QOL were *** positive coping measures and behavioral or avoidant coping measures were also ***,a number of sociodemographic factors were also seen to interact significantly with burnout,PTSD and ***:This study provides some insights into the psychological challenges of disaster relief volunteers in Malaysia,and this impact can last a long time after the volunteers return to their *** recommendations including practice development,policy and research were discussed in the study.

Corporate governance mechanisms and performance： Analysis of Malaysian family and non-family controlled companies

Most study concentrating on family and non-family companies is conducted overseas with little research carried out in Malaysia. This study examined the impact of corporate governance mechanisms on family and non-family controlled companies＇ performance. The sample size of this study is 730 companies listed on Bursa Malaysia from 2003 to 2007. The findings reveal that corporate governance mechanisms influence the family and non-family controlled companies＇ performance. But not all corporate governance mechanisms are significant. The significant variables differ between family and non-family controlled companies. Thus, regulators need to be vigilant that family and non-family controlled companies practise differently and to set different code needed for each type of families.

Forensic Accounting and Fraud： Capability and Competence Requirements in Malaysia

The 2011 Global Economic Crime Survey instituted by PricewaterhouseCoopers （PwC） confirms the economic crime in Malaysia to be on the increase and, therefore, requires immediate attention to stem the tides. In anticipation of the challenges occasioned due to a shift from the modified cash basis to the accrual basis of accounting, the Malaysian State＇s determination to move from a developing nation to a developed nation, and to be ranked among the first 10 in 2020, this paper presents the need for forensic accountant and auditor capability （i.e., mindset and skills） on forensic accountant and auditor competence （i.e., task performance fraud risk assessment （TPFRA）） in the Malaysian public sector. It also draws the attention of the users of public sector accountants and auditors to the understanding of fraud mechanisms and how to deal with fraudsters. The population of this study comprised the accountants and auditors in the office of the Accountant General and Auditor General of Malaysia. The objective of this paper is to investigate the competence requirements of accountants and auditors in the effective and efficient utilization of capability requirements, which have the potentials to usher in the best global practices in fighting fraud in the Malaysian public sector.

BACKGROUND Heart rate variability(HRV)was shown to be affected by performing religious *** To examine the relationship between the level of Quran(the holy book of Muslims)memorisation and HRV among *** This experimental study included 16 Tahfiz students and 16 non-Tahfiz students(n=32).The HRV was measured in three tasks:Recalling familiar verses,memorising new verses,and recalling the newly memorised verses of the *** analysis was done using these parameters:Standard deviation of N-N(heartbeat peak)interval;low frequency(LF);high frequency(HF)and LF/HF *** There were significant differences between tasks for all parameters(P<0.05).However,between the groups,only the LF/HF ratio had significant differences,with F=5.04,P<*** correlation showed a moderate positive correlation between the number of pages memorised and the LF/HF ratio(r=0.61,P<0.05).CONCLUSION Quran memorisation increased the HRV and our results suggested that this activity could be developed as an effective sympathovagal modulation training activity.

BACKGROUND The majority of published reports on foreign bodies(FBs)involve the rectum and applied a transanal ***,patients with FB above the rectum are subjected to laparotomy for ***,we illustrate the case of a man with an FB that had migrated into the descending colon,and its successful removal via a laparoscopic *** SUMMARY A 43-year-old man,who had the habit of FB insertion into his anus to aid defe-cation,presented upon experience of such an FB slipping through and migrating upward to the distal *** abdominal radiograph revealed a bottle-shaped FB,positioned in the left iliac fossa *** FB was successfully removed via a laparoscopic-assisted procedure in which we combined diagnostic laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques during *** patient was monitored for 2 d postoperatively and subsequently discharged *** A minimally invasive approach should be adopted to aid extraction of colorectal FB as it is effective and safe.

Anti-hepatitis A seroprevalence among chronic viral hepatitis patients in Kelantan,Malaysia

AIM:To determine the seroprevalence of anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibodies in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and to justify the need for hepatitis A ***:Patients (n=119) were enrolled between July and September *** diagnosis of CLD was based on the presence of viral markers for more than 6 *** diagnosis of liver cirrhosis was based on clinical,biochemical and radiological *** serum was tested for anti-HAV ***:The overall anti-HAV seroprevalence was 88.2%.The aetiology of CLD was hepatitis B in 96 patients (80.7%) and hepatitis C in 23 patients (19.3%).Mean age was 44.4 ± 14 *** were grouped according to age as follows:24 (20.2%) patients in the 21-30 years age group,22 (18.5%) in the 31-40 years age group,31 (26.1%) in the 41-50 years age group,23(19.3%) in the 51-60 years age group and 19 (16.0%) patients aged greater than 60 years,with reported seroprevalences of 66.7%,95.5%,93.5%,91.3% and 94.7%,*** was a marked increase of seroprevalence in subjects older than 30 years (P=0.001).CONCLUSION:Our study demonstrated that patients aged greater than 30 years of age were likely to have natural immunity to hepatitis ***,hepatitis A vaccination may not be routinely required in this age group.

Effects of Tualang honey in modulating nociceptive responses at the spinal cord in offspring of prenatally stressed rats

Objective: This study was done to determine whether Tualang honey could prevent the altered nociceptive behaviour, with its associated changes of oxidative stress markers and morphology of the spinal cord,among the offspring of prenatally stressed ***: Pregnant rats were divided into three groups: control, stress, and stress treated with Tualang honey. The stress and stress treated with Tualang honey groups were subjected to restraint stress from day 11 of pregnancy until delivery. Ten week old male offspring(n = 9 from each group) were given formalin injection and their nociceptive behaviours were recorded. After 2 h, the rats were sacrificed, and their spinal cords were removed to assess oxidative stress activity and morphology. Nociceptive behaviour was analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance(ANOVA), while the levels of oxidative stress parameters and number of Nissl-stained neurons were analysed using a one-way ***: This study demonstrated that prenatal stress was associated with increased nociceptive behaviour, changes in the oxidative stress parameters and morphology of the spinal cord of offspring exposed to prenatal stress; administration of Tualang honey reduced the alteration of these ***: This study provides a preliminary understanding of the beneficial effects of Tualang honey against the changes in oxidative stress and neuronal damage in the spinal cord of the offspring of prenatally stressed rats.

Chitin is the second most abundant polysaccharide,produced mainly as an industrial waste stream during crustacean *** can be derived into chitosan through the deacetylation *** of shrimp waste into chitosan via the deacetylation process could be considered a practical approach for shell waste *** this study,chitosan’s physicochemical characteristics extracted from two types of Pacific white leg shrimp,***’s shell(i.e.,rough and smooth),were compared with commercial *** yield,moisture,ash,solubility,water and fat binding capacity were *** degree of deacetylation(DDA)was calculated using FTIR,and their chemical Structure was confirmed using XRD and *** extracted chitosan showed no significant difference in yield,moisture,ash,solubility and water binding capacity but showed a significant difference with commercial ***,the fat binding capacity of commercial chitosan showed the lowest percentage(408.34±0.83%)as compared to extracted chitosan(smooth shell 549.59±12.48%;rough shell 500.55±12.10%).The DDA indicated that extracted chitosan from the smooth and rough shell was considered good chitosan as compared to commercial chitosan with 84.08±1.27%,80.78±0.79%and 74.99±1.48%,***,the presence of hydroxyl and amino groups from FTIR and a good crystallinity index was recorded using XRD of extracted *** on observed characteristics,shrimp shell waste from *** can achieve chitosan standard quality as a biopolymer and highly potential to be applied in various industrial applications.

Profiling neuroprotective potential of trehalose in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases:a systematic review

Trehalose,a unique nonreducing crystalline disaccharide,is a potential disease-modifying treatment for neurodegenerative diseases associated with protein misfolding and aggregation due to aging,intrinsic mutations,or autophagy *** systematic review summarizes the effects of trehalose on its underlying mechanisms in animal models of selected neurodegenerative disorders(tau pathology,synucleinopathy,polyglutamine tract,and motor neuron diseases).All animal studies on neurodegenerative diseases treated with trehalose published in Medline(accessed via EBSCOhost)and Scopus were *** the 2259 studies screened,29 met the eligibility *** to the SYstematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experiment(SYRCLE)risk of bias tool,we reported 22 out of 29 studies with a high risk of *** present findings support the purported role of trehalose in autophagic flux and protein *** review identified several other lesser-known pathways,including modifying amyloid precursor protein processing,inhibition of reactive gliosis,the integrity of the blood-brain barrier,activation of growth factors,upregulation of the downstream antioxidant signaling pathway,and protection against mitochondrial *** absence of adverse events and improvements in the outcome parameters were observed in some studies,which supports the transition to human clinical *** is possible to conclude that trehalose exerts its neuroprotective effects through both direct and indirect ***,heterogeneous methodologies and outcome measures across the studies rendered it impossible to derive a definitive *** studies on trehalose would need to clarify three important questions:1)bioavailability with oral administration,2)optimal time window to confer neuroprotective benefits,and 3)optimal dosage to confer neuroprotection.
