Honey bees are an establi.hed ani.al model for studyi.g learni.g and memory related behavi.rs. i. recent years, honey bees have become more common as a model for i.vesti.ati.ns of molecular bi.logy, i.cludi.g gene expressi.n. Honey bees have been used to extrapolate geneti. functi.ns found i. other i.vertebrates, such as i.Drosophilai. melanogasteri.. The honey bee model has also provided a means for isolating novel genes, including non-coding microRNA fragments. Integrating the study of learning and memory with molecular genetics, the present work examines the effect of learning acquisition and memory consolidation in free-choice paradigms on the expression of a suite of genes of interest. Results suggest that short-term learning acquisition causes differential expression of microRNA fragments, while memory consolidation differentially affects the expression of the serine/threonine protein kinase gene in honey bees. These results corroborate previous findings suggesting the importance of protein kinases in the formation of long term memory, and suggest that microRNA may play a large role in regulation of cytoskeletal scaffolding proteins.

We propose that the comparati.e psychologi.al pri.ci.le of “levels” be used as a new research methodology to i.vesti.ate psi.i. humans. Rather than i.vesti.ate psi.i. ani.als, as i. someti.es done, we propose to i.vesti.ate psi.i. humans usi.g ani.als as a receptor. Our approach i. to start wi.h si.ple organi.ms such as protozoans and progress to planari.ns and honey bees. The behavi.r of these organi.ms i. well characteri.ed and easi.y mani.ulated. Devi.ti.ns from standard behavi.r patterns duri.g an experi.ent on teleki.esi. can suggest psi.effects. A major advantage of usi.g i.vertebrates for psi.research i. that i. a psi.effect i. found, the underlyi.g mechani.m of the effect can be analyzed usi.g molecular and geneti. tools. We provi.e suggesti.ns on how teleki.esi. can be studi.d usi.g thi. approach and suggest that Observati.n Ori.nted Modeli.g be used to analyze psi.data.
