Microwave simulation is significant in identifying a reactor design allowing the biomass to be heated and processed *** study integrated the radio frequency and transient heat transfer modules to simulate the microwave distribution and investigated the performance of microwave heating in the *** simulation results were compared with the experimental findings us-ing the finite element analysis software of COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS to predict the temperature profile and electric field of microwave in the biomass(empty fruit bunch pellets).The higher temperature distribution was observed at the bottom and centre section of the empty fruit bunch pellet bed in the reactor,showing the uniqueness of microwave *** to the simula-tion results,the temperature profile obtained through the specific cavity geometry and dielectric properties agreed with the experimental temperature *** simulated temperature profile demonstrated a logarithmic increase of 120°C/min at the first 50 s followed by 50°C/min until 350 *** experimental temperature profile showed three different heating rates before reaching 300°C,including 78.3°C/min(50-120°C),30.6°C/min(121-250°C),and 105°C/min(250-300°C).The results of this study might contribute to the improvement of microwave heating in biomass torrefaction.

This paper presents a decoupling theory named as Vascular Loading Decoupling Technique (VLDT), extended from the beat-based Tissue Control Method (TCM), for noninvasive measurement of real-time-based intra-arterial blood pressure and dynamic compliance of blood vessel. Both VLDT and TCM are based upon the decoupling theory to cause the arterial pulsation without the influence from surrounding tissues and measure the variations of the vascular diameter at critical depth. Meanwhile, the AC part of blood pressure is lost, that is, the reference pressure for AC controller is absent as well. To remedy this problem, VLDT employs Step-Hold control rules and cubic spline curve fitting technique to estimate the reference pressure, identify the impedance of blood vessel, and calculate the AC control gain at Hold stage, then track the AC part of blood pressure and compute the real-time arterial blood pressure at Step stage by turns, which makes the real time measurement feasible;moreover, the dynamic compliance of blood vessel can be extracted from real-time impedances of blood vessel. Since the compliance of blood vessel is decoupled from surrounding tissues, it is valuable for diagnosing the severity of vascular sclerosis. The simulation results showed that the VLDT approach is superiority over TCM. This could provide new prospective to circulatory medicine research.

Estimation of Future Generated Amount of E-Waste in the United States

Electrical and electronic equipment waste, or e-waste, is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the United States. The main objective of this study is to estimate the future quantities of e-waste of thirteen selected electric and electronic products in the United States in 2025. To estimate the future amount of e-waste, the authors performed a material flow analysis. The model inputs are historical and future product sales data and the product’s average life span. Sensitivity analysis was constructed to evaluate the effect of the model inputs (average life span and future sales data) in the generation of e-waste. The results show that about 1.0835 billion units will reach their end of life (EOL) in 2025;cell phone devices are the highest occurring product among the thirteen selected products and weighted for about 66.0% of units of the total amount, followed by computer products at 18.0%, TV products at 11.6%, computer monitors at 1.7%, hard copy peripherals (HCP) at 1.6%, and computer accessories at 1.0%. The sensitivity analysis shows that the product life span has an effect on the e-waste generation amounts from the products under study, while the sensitivity analysis of forecasted future sales indicates that the generated waste will increase or decrease according to the sales trend.

Microwave steam pyrolysis(MSP)is an innovative thermochemical approach to converting biomass into high-quality biochar using steam to improve the dielectric heating of microwave *** shows high fixed carbon and carbon contents at a maximum temperature of 550℃in 10 *** MSP achieved a heating rate of 112℃/min from 200℃to 400℃to produce biochar ***,the thermal properties of biochar in microwave heating were investigated in this study to explore its potential as a microwave heat-absorbent *** is able to perform volumetric and controllable heating to the ***,biochar shows good microwave heat absorbency,storing and transferring heat *** temperature profile of three different sizes of biochar was investigated to examine the efficiency of biochar in heat absorption from microwave *** was found that the powder form of biochar showed a higher heat transfer rate of 40℃/min and a low cooling rate of 7.5℃/*** presented results are useful for evaluating the application of biochar as a promising medium for heat storage systems.

Background:Arthrofibrosis is a joint disorder characterized by excessive scar formation in the joint *** E is an antioxidant with potential anti-fibroblastic *** aim of this study was to establish an arthrofibrosis rat model after joint replacement and assess the effects of vitamin E supplementation on joint ***:We simulated knee replacement in 16 male Sprague–Dawley *** immobilized the surgical leg with a suture in full *** control groups were killed at 2 and 12 weeks(n=5 per group),and the test group was supplemented daily with vitamin E(0.2 mg/mL)in their drinking water for 12 weeks(n=6).We performed histological staining to investigate the presence and severity of *** staining andα2-macroglobulin(α2M)enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)were used to assess local and systemic *** weight bearing(total internal reflection)and range of motion(ROM)were collected for functional ***:The ROM and weight-bearing symmetry decreased after the procedure and recovered slowly with still significant deficit at the end of the study for both *** analysis confirmed fibrosis in both lateral and posterior periarticular *** E supplementation showed a moderate anti-inflammatory effect on the local and systemic *** vitamin E group exhibited significant improvement in ROM and weight-bearing symmetry at day 84 compared to the control ***:This model is viable for simulating arthrofibrosis after joint *** E may benefit postsurgical arthrofibrosis,and further studies are needed for dosing requirements.

AIM： To investigate the combined effect of etoposide and radiation on CT26 colorectal adenocarcinoma implanted into BALB/c mice. METHODS： We evaluated the radiosensitizing effect of etoposide on CT26 colorectal adenocarcinoma in a syngeneic animal model. BALB/c mice were subcutaneously implanted with CT26 cells and divided into four groups： Gonlyol （intra-peritoneal saline×2） group, etoposide （5 mg/kg intra-peritoneally×2） group, radiation therapy （RT 5 Gy×2 fractions） group, and combination therapy with etoposide （5 mg/kg intra-peritoneally 1 h before radiation） group. RESULTS： Tumor growth was significantly inhibited by RT and combination therapy. The effect of combination therapy was better than that of RT. No significant changes were noted in body weight, plasma alanine aminotransferase, or creatinine in any group. The leukocyte count significantly but transiently decreased in the RT and combination therapy groups, but not in the etoposide and control groups. There was no skin change or hair loss in the RT and combination therapy groups. CONCLUSION： Etoposide can sensitize CT26 colorectal adenocarcinoma in BALB/c mice to RT without significant toxicity.

In this paper,we develop a direct-forcing immersed boundary projection method for simulating the dynamics in thermal fluid-solid interaction *** underlying idea of the method is that we treat the solid as made of fluid and introduce two virtual forcing ***,a virtual fluid force distributed only on the solid region is appended to the momentum equation to make the region behave like a real solid body and satisfy the prescribed ***,a virtual heat source located inside the solid region near the boundary is added to the energy transport equation to impose the thermal boundary condition on the solid *** take the implicit second-order backward differentiation to discretize the time variable and employ the Choi-Moin projection scheme to split the coupled *** for spatial discretization,second-order centered differences over a staggered Cartesian grid are used on the entire *** advantages of this method are its conceptual simplicity and ease of *** experiments are performed to demonstrate the high performance of the proposed *** tests show that the spatial convergence rates of all unknowns seem to be super-linear in the 1-norm and 2-norm while less than linear in the maximum norm.

AIM： To enhance the differentiation of insulin producing cell （IPC） ability from embryonic stem （ES） cells in vitro. METHODS： Four-day embryoid body （EB）-formatted ES cells were dissociated as single cells for the followed plasmid DNA delivery. The use of NucleofectorTM electroporator （Amaxa biosystems, Germany） in combination with medium-contained G418 provided a high efficiency of gene delivery for advanced selection. Neucleofected cells were plated on the top of fibronectincoated Petri dishes. Addition of Ly294002 and raised the glucose in medium at 24 h before *** differentiation status of these cells was monitored by semi-quantitative PCR （SQ-PCR） detection of the expression of relative genes, such as oct-4, sox-17, foxa2, mixll, pdx-1, insulin 1, glucagons and somatostatin. The percentage of IPC population on d 18 of the experiment was investigated by immunohistochemistry （IHC）, and the content/secretion of insulin was estimated by ELISA assay. The mice with severe combined immunodeficiency disease （SCID） pretreated with streptozotocin （STZ） were used to eliminate plasma glucose restoration after pax4^＋ ES implantation. RESULTS： A high efficiency of gene delivery was demonstrated when neucleofection was used in the present study; approximately 70% cells showed DsRed expression 2 d after neucleofection. By selection of medium-contained G418, the percentage of DsRed expressing cells kept high till the end of study. The pancreatic differentiation seemed to be accelerated by pax4 nucleofection. When compared to the group of cells with mock control, foxa2, mixll, pdxl, higher insulin and somatostatin levels were detected by SQ-PCR 4 d after nucleofection in the group of pax4 expressing plasmid delivery. Approximately 55% of neucleofected cells showed insulin expression 18 d after neucleofection, and only 18% of cells showed insulin expression in mock control. The disturbance was shown by nucleofected pax4 RNAi vector; only 8% of cells expressed insulin
