I can＇t imagine something like this： One day （the future which is now） a pupil asked such a question in class when I taught about the HGP, ＂My teacher, why didn＇t China do something for the HGP？. ＂ I would deeply regret for the rest of all my fife if my response could only be the following：＂My kids, how can you know, ah, that time, how poor our country was, how illiterate our people were, how shortsighted our decision-makers were, and how disappointing our scientists were, ... we just saw our great nation thus losing another historic opportunity without doing anything, ＂ No. it will never come true.

This paper presents a topology optimization method for variable stiffness composite panels with varying fiber orientation and curvilinear fiber path.Non-uniform rational B-Splines(NURBS)based Isogeometric analysis(IGA)is utilized for the numerical computation of the general minimum compliance problem.The sensitivity analysis of the structure compliance function for the density and bi-layer orientation is conducted.The bi-layer fiber paths in the design domain are generated using streamline method and updated by divided pieces reselection method after the optimization process.Several common examples are tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.The results show that the proposed method can generate more manufacturable fiber paths than some typical topology optimization methods.

The performances of a refrigeration unit relying on compressors working in parallel have been investigated considering the influence of the compressor volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency on the compression ratio.Moreover,the following influential factors have been taken into account:evaporation temperature,condensation temperature and compressor suction-exhaust pressure ratio for different opening conditions of the compressor.The following quantities have been selected as the unit performance measurement indicators:refrigeration capacity,energy efficiency ratio(COP),compressor power consumption,and refrigerant flow rate.The experimental results indicate that the system refrigeration capacity and COP decrease with a decrease in evaporation temperature,increase of condensation temperature,and increase in pressure ratio.The refrigerant flow rate increases with the increase in evaporation temperature,decrease in condensing temperature and increase in pressure ratio.The compressor power consumption increases with the increase in condensing temperature and increase in pressure ratio,but is not significantly affected by the evaporation temperature.

This paper proposes a multiscale isogeometric topology optimization(ITO)method where the configuration and layout of microstructures are optimized simultaneously.At micro scale,a shape deformation method is presented to transform a prototype microstructure(PM)for obtaining a series of graded microstructures(GMs),where microstructural skeleton based on the level set framework is applied to retain more topology features and improve the connectability.For the macro scale calculation,the effective mechanical properties can be estimated by means of the numerical homogenization method.By adopting identical non-uniform rational basis splines(NURBS)as basis functions for both parameterized level set model and isogeometric calculation model,the isogeometric analysis(IGA)is integrated into the level set method,which contributes to improving the accuracy and efficiency.Numerical examples demonstrate that,the proposed method is effective in improving the performance and manufacturability.

When using RNA interference （RNAi） to study gene functions in Lepidoptera insects, we discovered that some genes could not be suppressed; instead, their expression levels could be up-regulated by double-stranded RNA （dsRNA）. To predict which genes could be easily silenced, we treated the Asian corn borer （Ostriniafilrnacalis） with dsGFP （green fluorescent protein） and dsMLP （muscle lim protein）. A transcriptome sequence analysis was conducted using the cDNAs 6 h after treatment with dsRNA. The results indicated that 160 genes were up-regulated and 44 genes were down-regulated by the two dsRNAs. Then, 50 co-up-regulated, 25 co-down-regulated and 43 unaffected genes were selected to determine their RNAi responses. All the 25 down-regulated genes were knocked down by their corresponding dsRNA. However, several of the up-regulated and unaffected genes were up-regulated when treated with their corresponding dsRNAs instead of being knocked down. The genes up-regulated by the dsGFP treatment may be involved in insect immune responses or the RNAi pathway. When the immune-related genes were excluded, only seven genes were induced by dsGFP, including ago-2 and dicer-2. These results not only provide a reference for efficient RNAi target predications, but also provide some potential RNAi pathway-related genes for further study.

Gamete production is essential for mammalian reproduction.In the ovaries,the primordial follicle,which is the basic reproductive unit,is formed either perinatally or during the second pregnancy stage in humans.However,some oocytes die before the establishment of the primordial follicle pool.Consequently,it is essential to uncover how the size of the primordial follicle pool is determined and how the programmed cell death of oocytes is performed under potential surveillance.According to recent studies,the fate of oocytes in the fetal ovary seems to be determined by different protective strategies through the timely control of apoptosis or autophagy.In this review,we discuss at least three oocyte-derived protective biomarkers,glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta,X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis,and Lysine-specific demethylase 1(also known as KDM1A),responsible for surveilling the developmental quality of fetal oocytes to coordinate primordial follicle formation in the fetal ovary.This review contributes to a better understanding of the secrets of the female reproductive reserve under physiological conditions.

The direct and gut microbiota-mediated effects of dietary bile acids on the improvement of gut barriers in largemouth bass(Micropterus salmoides)

Fish gut barrier damage under intensive culture model is a significant concern for aquaculture industry.This study aimed to investigate the effects of bile acids(BAs)on gut barriers in Micropterus salmoides.A germ-free(GF)zebrafish model was employed to elucidate the effects of the direct stimulation of BAs and the indirect regulations mediated by the gut microbiota on gut barrier functions.Four diets were formulated with BAs supplemented at 0,150,300 and 450 mg/kg,and these 4 diets were defined as control,BA150,BA300 and BA450,respectively.After 5 weeks of feeding experiment,the survival rate of fish fed with BA300 diet was increased(P0.05).The results of the gut microbiota transferring experiment demonstrated an upregulation of gut barrier-related genes,including immunoglobulin Z/T(Ig Z/T),IL-6,IL-1βand IL-10,by the gut microbiota transferred from the BA300 group compared with the control(P<0.05).Feeding the BA300 diet directly to GF zebrafish resulted in enhanced expression of Ig M,Ig Z/T,lysozyme,occludin-2,IL-6 and IL-10(P<0.05).In conclusion

To the Editor:Glycemic control in individuals with type 1 diabetes(T1D)is challenging and requires multidimensional evaluation and precise management.Glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c)is currently the gold standard for assessing glucose control and predicting diabetes prognosis.However,it exhibits limitations in terms of accuracy,which is influenced by clinical factors,^([1])and its inability to reflect information about hypoglycemia and glycemic variability.[2]Continuous glucose monitoring(CGM)has revolutionized glycemic profile evaluation by introducing novel glycemic variables that surpass conventional parameters and offer insights into critical areas for improving glycemic control.

A MnO_(2)/carbon nanotube(CNT)nanocomposite was synthesised using a simple hydrothermal treatment.The nanocomposite exhibits a CNT core/MnO_(2)porous sheath hierarchy architecture,which makes it promising as an electrode material for supercapacitors.An asymmetric supercapacitor based on activated carbon(AC)as anode,MnO_(2)/CNT nanocomposite as cathode and 1M Na_(2)SO_(4)solution as electrolyte was assembled in a Swagelok cell.The full cell exhibits excellent power capability,cycling stability and a high energy density of 23 W h/kg at a power density of 330 W/kg based on the total mass of the active electrode materials.This AC//MnO_(2)/CNT asymmetric supercapacitor is promising for high-power applications due to its high energy density and power density.
