Interfacial parasitic reactions of zinc anodes in zinc ion batteries:Underestimated corrosion and hydrogen evolution reactions and their suppression strategies

Featured with high power density,improved safety and low-cost,rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs) have been revived as possible candidates for sustainable energy storage systems in recent years.However,the challenges inherent in zinc(Zn) anode,namely dendrite formation and interfacial parasitic reactions,have greatly impeded their practical application.Whereas the critical issue of dendrite formation has attracted widespread concern,the parasitic reactions of Zn anodes with mildly acidic electrolytes have received very little attentions.Considering that the low Zn reversibility that stems from interfacial parasitic reactions is the major obstacle to the commercialization of ZIBs,thorough understanding of these side reactions and the development of correlative inhibition strategies are significant.Therefore,in this review,the brief fundamentals of corrosion and hydrogen evolution reactions at Zn surface is presented.In addition,recent advances and research efforts addressing detrimental side reactions are reviewed from the perspective of electrode design,electrode-electrolyte interfacial engineering and electrolyte modification.To facilitate the future researches on this aspect,perspectives and suggestions for relevant investigations are provided lastly.

Anti-Corrosion and Reconstruction of Surface Crystal Plane for Zn Anodes by an Advanced Metal Passivation Technique

For the aqueous Zn-ion battery,dendrite formation,corrosion,and interfacial parasitic reactions are major issues,which greatly inhibits their practical application.How to develop a method of Zn construction or treatment to solve these issues for Zn anodes are still great challenges.Herein,a simple and cheap metal passivation technique is proposed for Zn anodes from a corrosion science perspective.Similar to the metal anticorrosion engineering,the formed interfacial protective layer in a chemical way can sufficiently solve the corrosion issues.Furthermore,the proposed passivity approach can reconstruct Zn surface-preferred crystal planes,exposing more(002)planes and improving surface hydrophilicity,which inhibits the formation of Zn dendrites and hydrogen evolution effectively.As expected,the passivated Zn achieves outstanding cycling life(1914 h)with low voltage polarization(<40 mV).Even at 6 mA cm^(−2) and 3 mA h cm^(−2),it can achieve stable Zn deposition over 460 h.The treated Zn anode coupled with MnO_(2) cathode shows prominently reinforced full batteries service life,making it a potential Zn anode candidate for excellent performance aqueous Zn-ion batteries.The proposed passivation approach provides a guideline for other metal electrodes preparation in various batteries and establishes the connections between corrosion science and batteries.

The practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)is limited by the growth of dendrite during cycling.How to rationally design and construct an efficient artificial interface layer by selecting suitable building units to control the dendrite growth is still a challenge.Herein,a porous boron nitride nanofibers(BNNFs)artificial interface layer was constructed,and its working mechanisms were revealed by both experiments(electrochemical characterization and in-situ optical microscope)and theoretical calculations(density functional theory(DFT)and finite element simulation).The insulated BNNFs layer leads to position-selected electroplating between BNNFs layer and Zn foil.The unique negatively charged surface and porosity of BNNFs contribute to the self-concentrating and pumping features of Zn ions,thus suppressing the concentration polarization on the Zn surface.Additionally,densely arranged porous BNNFs have a shunt effect on Zn ions diffusion,resulting in uniform distributions of Zn ions and electric field.The introduced BNNFs layer not only makes Zn deposition uniform but also restrains the dendrite growth,therefore the Zn+BNNFs symmetric cells perform ultralong stable cycling for 1,600 h at 1 mA·cm–2 and more than 500 h at 10 mA·cm–2.Moreover,Zn+BNNFs||CNT/MnO2 battery presents a high initial capacity of 293.6 mAh·g–1 and an excellent retention rate of 97.6%at 1 A·g–1 after 400 cycles,while Zn||CNT/MnO2 battery only maintains 37.1%discharge capacity.This artificial interface layer with negatively charged BNNFs exhibits excellent dendrite-inhibit and may have enormous prospects in other metal batteries.

Laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF)-built triply periodic minimal surface(TPMS)structures are designed by implicit functions and are endowed with superior characteristics,such as adjustable mechanical properties and light-weight features for bone repairing;thus,they are considered as potential candidates for bone scaffolds.Unfortunately,previous studies have mainly focused on different TPMS structures.The fundamental understanding of the differences between strut and sheet-based structures remains exclusive,where both were designed by one formula.This consequently hinders their practical applications.Herein,we compared the morphology,mechanical properties,and biocompatibility of sheet and strut-based structures.In particular,the different properties and in vivo bone repair effects of the two structures are uncovered.First,the morphology characteristics demonstrate that the manufacturing errors of sheet-based structures with diverse porosities are comparable,and semi-melting powders as well as the ball phenomenon are observed;in comparison,strut-based samples exhibit cracks and thickness shrinking.Second,the mechanical properties indicate that the sheet-based structures have a greater elastic modulus,energy absorption,and better repeatability compared to strut-based structures.Furthermore,layer-by-layer fracturing and diagonal shear failure modes are observed in strut-based and sheet-based structures,respectively.The in vivo experiment demonstrates enhanced bone tissues in the strut-based scaffold.This study significantly enriches our understanding of TPMS structures and provides significant insights in the design of bone scaffolds under various bone damaging conditions.

Developing high power-high energy electrochemical energy storage systems is an ultimate goal in energy storage field, which is even more difficult but significant for low cost sodium ion batteries. According to the transport properties of electrodes, constructing an effective mixed conducting network is very helpful to improve the rate performance. We have successully fabricated NaV(PO) with ultrahigh rate performance, whose rate capability even outperforms lithium cathodes. However, the energy density of NaV(PO) is not satisfactory. We experimentally investigate and improve the transport properties of high energy NaV(PO)F, whose the rate capability of NaV(PO)F is still not comparable to NaV(PO). Here, for the first time we proposed a two-step strategy(solvothermal plus ESD method) to construct a bicontinuous ordered network of 3 D porous Na(VO)(PO) F/rGO(NVOPF/rGO). This two-step strategy makes sure that NVOPF can be prepared by ESD, since it can avoid the loss of F element during synthesis. The obtained NVOPF particles are as small as 15 nm(the minimum size ever reported), and the carbon content is only 3.5% in the final nanocomposite. Such bicontinuous ordered network and small size of electroactive particles lead to significant contribution of pseudocapacitance effect to sodium storage, resulting in real high power-high energy sodium cathodes. The cathode exhibits excellent rate capability and cycling stability, whose rate performance is one of the best ever reported in both half cells and full cells. Moreover, this work provides a general and promising strategy for developing high power-high energy electrode materials for various electrochemical energy storage systems.

Characteristics and realization of the second generation surface acoustic wave’s wavelet device

To overcome the bulk acoustic wave （BAW）, the triple transit signals and the discontinuous frequency band in the first generation surface acoustic wave＇s （FGSAW＇ s） wavelet device, the full transfer multistrip coupler （MSC） is applied to implement wavelet device, and a novel structure of the second generation surface acoustic wave＇s （SGSAW＇s） wavelet device is proposed. In the SGSAW＇ s wavelet device, the BAW is separated and eliminated in different acoustic propagating tracks, and the triple transit signal is suppressed. For arbitrary wavelet scale device, the center frequency is three times the radius of frequency band, which ensures that the frequency band of the SGSAW＇s wavelet device is continuous, and avoids losing signals caused by the discontinuation of frequency band. Experimental result confirms that the BAW suppression, ripples in band, receiving loss and insertion loss of the SGSAW＇ s wavelet device are remarkably improved compared with those of the FGSAW＇ s wavelet device.

Leaching kinetics of fluorine during the aluminum removal from spent Li-ion battery cathode materials

The high content of aluminum(Al)impurity in the recycled cathode powder seriously affects the extraction efficiency of Nickel,Cobalt,Manganese,and Lithium resources and the actual commercial value of recycled materials,so Al removal is crucially important to conform to the industrial standard of spent Li-ion battery cathode materials.In this work,we systematically investigated the leaching process and optimum conditions associated with Al removal from the cathode powder materials collected in a wet cathode-powder peeling and recycling production line of spent Li-ion batteries(LIBs).Moreover,we specifically studied the leaching of fluorine(F)synergistically happened along with the removal process of Al,which was not concerned about in other studies,but one of the key factors affecting pollution prevention in the recovery process.The mechanism of the whole process including the leaching of Al and F from the cathode powder was indicated by using NMR,FTIR,and XPS,and a defluoridation process was preliminarily investigated in this study.The leaching kinetics of Al could be successfully described by the shrinking core model,controlled by the diffusion process and the activation energy was 11.14 kJ/mol.While,the leaching of F was attributed to the dissolution of LiPF6and decomposition of PVDF,and the kinetics associated was described by Avrami model.The interaction of Al and F is advantageous to realize the defluoridation to some degree.It is expected that our investigation will provide theoretical support for the large-scale recycling of spent LIBs.

Electron beam lithography on nonplanar and irregular surfaces

E-beam lithography is a powerful tool for generating nanostructures and fabricating nanodevices with fine features approaching a few nanometers in size.However,alternative approaches to conventional spin coating and development processes are required to optimize the lithography procedure on irregular surfaces.In this review,we summarize the state of the art in nanofabrication on irregular substrates using e-beam lithography.To overcome these challenges,unconventional methods have been developed.For instance,polymeric and nonpolymeric materials can be sprayed or evaporated to form uniform layers of electron-sensitive materials on irregular substrates.Moreover,chemical bonds can be applied to help form polymer brushes or self-assembled monolayers on these surfaces.In addition,thermal oxides can serve as resists,as the etching rate in solution changes after e-beam exposure.Furthermore,e-beam lithography tools can be combined with cryostages,evaporation systems,and metal deposition chambers for sample development and lift-off while maintaining low temperatures.Metallic nanopyramids can be fabricated on an AFM tip by utilizing ice as a positive resistor.Additionally,Ti/Au caps can be patterned around a carbon nanotube.Moreover,3D nanostructures can be formed on irregular surfaces by exposing layers of anisole on organic ice surfaces with a focused e-beam.These advances in e-beam lithography on irregular substrates,including uniform film coating,instrumentation improvement,and new pattern transferring method development,substantially extend its capabilities in the fabrication and application of nanoscale structures.

Wood is an invaluable asset to human society due to its renewable nature,making it suitable for both sustainable energy production and material manufacturing.Additionally,wood derived from forest trees plays a crucial role in sequestering a significant portion of the carbon dioxide fixed during photosynthesis by terrestrial plants.Nevertheless,with the expansion of the global population and ongoing industrialization,forest coverage has been substantially decreased,resulting in significant challenges for wood production and supply.Wood production practices have changed away from natural forests toward plantation forests.Thus,understanding the underlying genetic mechanisms of wood formation is the foundation for developing high-quality,fast-growing plantation trees.Breeding ideal forest trees for wood production using genetic technologies has attracted the interest of many.Tremendous studies have been carried out in recent years on the molecular,genetic,and cell-biological mechanisms of wood formation,and considerable progress and findings have been achieved.These studies and findings indicate enormous possibilities and prospects for tree improvement.This review will outline and assess the cellular and molecular mechanisms of wood formation,as well as studies on genetically improving forest trees,and address future development prospects.
