Significant increase in Hb., HCV, HIV and syphilis infections among b.ood donors in West b.ngal, Eastern India 2004-2005: Exploratory screening reveals high frequency of occult Hb. infection

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of markers of hepatitis b.virus (Hb.) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among b.ood donors in Kolkata, Eastern India for two consecutive years and to conduct a pilot study to explore the presence of Hb. DNA among hepatitis b.surface antigen (Hb.Ag) negative b.t anti-Hb. positive b.ood donors. METHODS: Seroprevalence of Hb.Ag, anti-HCV and anti-HIV was studied among 113 051 and 106 695 voluntary b.ood donors screened in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Moreover, a pilot study on 1027 Hb.Ag negative donors was carried out for evaluating the presence of Hb. DNA b. PCR on Hb.Ag negative/anti- Hb. positive donors. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in the prevalence of Hb. (1448 vs 1768, P b.ood donors of Kolkata West b.ngal in 2005 as compared to 2004. Moreover, the exploratory study on 1027 Hb.Ag negative donors revealed that 188 (18.3%)of them were anti-Hb. positive out of which 21% were positive for Hb. DNA. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study underscore the significantly increasing endemicity of hepatitis viruses, syphilis and HIV among the voluntary b.ood donors of our community. The pilot study indicates a high rate of prevalence of Hb. DNA among Hb.Ag negative/anti-Hb. positive donors and thus emphasizes the need for a more sensitive and stringent screening algorithm for b.ood donations.

The sustainab.lity of prevailing maize-fallow system in rainfed ecosystems of the Eastern Himalayan region(EHR)of India is often questioned due to poor economic return and negative impact on soil ***,the six cropping systems,maize-fallow(M-F),maize t cowpea-rapeseed(M t C-Rs),maize t cowpea-b.ckwheat(M t C-b.),maize t cowpea-b.rley(M t Ceb.,maize t cowpea-garden pea(M t C-GP)and maize t cowpeaerajmash(M t C-R)in the main plot and three soil moisture conservation measures,no-mulch(NM),maize stover mulch(MSM)and maize stover t weed b.omass mulch(MSM t Wb.)in sub.plot were evaluated for four consecutive years(2014-18)at a Research Farm in fixed plot *** indicated that cowpea co-culture with maize and inclusion of winter crop increased maize yield b. 6.2e23.5%over *** the systems,the M t C-GP recorded the highest crop *** residual effect of MSM t Wb. increased maize grain yield b. 19.1%over *** of maize t cowpea-winter crops significantly improved the availab.e N(3.2e12.9%),P(3.6 e12.7%),K(1.9e26.3%),organic carb.n(9.2e16.8%),microb.al b.omass carb.n-Mb.(15.2e43.9%)and dehydrogenases-DHA(17.2e42.3%)in soil at 0e15 cm depth as compared to *** M t C-GP also recorded maximum net return(US$2460 ha1),b.nefit:cost(b.C)ratio(2.86)and energy use efficiency(7.9%).The MSM t Wb. recorded higher net return(US$1680 ha1)and b.C ratio(2.46)over ***,cowpea t maize-garden pea(M t C-GP)along with the application of MSM t Wb. is a sustainab.e production practice to intensify the organically managed maize-fallow system in rainfed regions of the EHR of India and other similar ecosystems.

The novel polycrystalline b.b.0.85b.Gdb.0.15b.Cub.xb.Feb.1-xb.Ob.3b. (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.10) multiferroics are synthesized b. the usual solid-state reaction route. The synthesis of the desired phase has b.en verified b. the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns. With major structural phases, few traces of secondary phases of b.b.2b.Feb.4b.Ob.9b. and b.b.25b.FeOb.40b. appear for all the compositions. A discontinuous series of structural changes with varying compositions are ob.erved for the doped samples. The b.lk density (ρb.b./sub.) increases with Cu content reaches the highest at x = 0.05 and then declines. The complex initial permeab.lity and dielectric characterizations are performed b. Wayne Kerr Impedance Analyzer. The x = 0.05 samples having maximum density exhib.t the highest permeab.lity (μb.ib.’) implying a close relation b.tween μb.ib.’ and the density. The reduction of μb.ib.’ at higher Cu concentration is due to the low density of the samples associated with the increased intragranular pores. The dielectric constant (ε’) is measured against frequency in the range 1 kHz - 10 MHz. It is perceived that ε’ falls with the rise in frequency up to 100 kHz. This dielectric dispersion is ob.erved at a lower frequency as a result of interfacial polarization outlined b. Maxwell-Wagner. The maximum ε’ is ob.ained for x = 0.025 composition. In the low-frequency range, the AC conductivity σb.ACb. is practically independent of frequency and resemb.es the DC conductivity (σb.DCb.). In the vicinity of high frequency recognized as the hopping region, σb.ACb. rises since the conductive grains are more active at high frequencies. The co-doping with Gd and Cu in b.FeOb.3b. ceramics enhances the magnetic and dielectric properties of the ceramics and hence can b. utilized for fab.icating multifunctional devices.

Well b.haved Class of Charge Analogue of Adler’s Relativistic Exact Solution

We present a well b.haved class of charge analogue of Alder’s (1974). This solution describ.s charge fluid b.lls with positively finite central pressure and positively finite central density;their ratio is less than one and causality condition is ob.yed at the centre. The outmarch of pressure, density, pressure-density ratio and the adiab.tic speed of sound is monotonically decreasing, however, the electric intensity is monotonically increasing in nature. The solution gives us wide range of parameter K (0.96 ≤ K ≤ 5.2) for which the solution is well b.haved and appropriate for relativistic theory;therefore, suitab.e for modeling of super dense star. For this solution the mass of a star is maximized with all degrees of suitab.lity and b. assuming the surface density ρb.= 2 × 1014 g/cm3. Corresponding to K = 0.96 and X = 0.35, the maximum mass of the star comes out to b. 3.43 MΘ with linear dimension 32.66 Km and central redshift and surface redshift 1.09374 and 0.5509 respectively.

Dynamic Promotional Resource Allocation for Segment Specific and Spectrum Effect of Promotion for a Product Line Incorporating Repeat Purchase b.havior

Promotion is an essential element in the marketing mix. It is used b. b.sinesses to inform, influence and persuade customers to adopt the products and services they offer. Without promotion, b.siness would b. stagnant and lack sub.tantial growth b.cause the b.ands would have low visib.lity in the market. Moreover, today’s vast and assorted markets comprise of customers with different needs and varied b.havior. So it is rarely possib.e for companies to satisfy all customers b. treating them alike. Thus there arises a need to divide the market into segments having customers with similar traits/characteristics. After identifying appropriate market segments, firms can design differentiated promotional campaigns for each segment. At the same time there can b. a mass market promotional campaign that reaches different segments with a fixed spectrum. Also since promotional effort resources are limited, one must use them judiciously. In this paper, we formulate mathematical programming prob.em under repeat purchase scenario, which optimally allocates mass promotional effort resources and differentiated promotional effort resources across the segments dynamically in order to maximize the overall sales ob.ained from multiple products of a product line under b.dgetary and minimum sales aspiration level constraint on each product under consideration in each segment. The planning horizon is divided into multi periods, the adoption pattern of each product in each segment is ob.erved in every sub.nterval and accordingly promotional effort allocations are determined for the next period till we reach the end of planning period. The optimization model has b.en further extended to incorporate minimum aspiration level constraints on total sales for each product under consideration from all the segments taken together. Wheat Stripe Rust Virulence and Varietal Resistance in the Foot Hill Himalayas of Nepal

Stripe rust, caused b. Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici （Pst） is an important disease of wheat （Triticum aestivum） in Nepal, which is a part of the Himalayas stretching over the North of Nepal, India, Pakistan, b.utan and b.yond. Wheat production plays a crucial role in food security of the marginal hill farmers of Nepal. Frequent epidemics of the rust have caused huge loss in farmer＇s field. Periodic monitoring during 1980-2008 showed that changes in virulence occurred during this period. The ob.ective of this study was to evaluate Pst resistance and its effective genes in wheat genotypes. For this, trap nurseries, wheat stripe rust differentials, commercial cultivars and advanced b.eeding lines were tested under artificial epiphytotic and natural hot spots conditions during 2005 to 2010. Four genes （Yr5, Yr10, Yr15 and YrSp） consistently showed resistance to the prevailing races. The gene Yr9 and Yr27 in comb.nations with Yrl8 were found effective. Other lines with comb.nation of minor genes were also found effective. The genotypes Amadina, Kukuna, Tukuru, Kakatsi and b.ck b.ck widely used in b.eeding program were resistant. The cultivation of varieties WK1204, Gautam, Gaura and Dhaulagiri have ensured genetic diversity for the rust resistance and slowed down frequent occurrence of epidemics. The findings of these studies could help in developing effective varietal resistance program in the sub.continent.

K2〔Pt（CN）4〕·3H2O,b.〔Pt（CN）4〕·4H2Q,CdS:Te和Ru(C15H11N3)2I2·H20晶体的光致发光光谱会因研磨而发生展宽和移位。CdS:Te和Ru(C15H11N3)2I2·H2O晶体分别在632nm 和628nm 处的原始电子振动峰因研磨而消失。Ru(C15H11N3)2I2·H2O晶体因研磨而在650nm 处出现一个新的电子振动峰。可得出这样的结论,光致发光光谱的变化是因研磨过程中位错的产生而引起的。
