Roles of antigen receptors and CA215 in the innate immunity of cancer cells

Antigen receptors, including immunoglobulins and T-cell receptors, are known to be widely expressed by cancer cells through unconfirmed mechanisms and for unknown purposes. Recently, a monoclonal antibody, designated as RP215, was generated against the ovarian cancer cell line, OC-3-VGH, and was shown to react with CA215, which consisted mainly of these cancer cell-expressed antigen receptors. Experimental evidence has clearly indicated that cancerous immunoglobulins play significant roles in the growth and proliferation of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. RP215 and anti-antigen receptor antibodies were equally effective in inducing apoptosis and complement-dependent cytotoxicity reactions to cultured cancer cells. Through gene regulation studies, both RP215 and antibodies against antigen-receptors were shown to affect more than a dozen of genes involved in cell proliferation (such as NFκB-1, IgG, P21, cyclin D1, ribosomal P1, and c-fos). Furthermore, selected toll-like receptor genes (TLR- 2, -3, -4, and -9) were also found to be highly regulated by both RP215 and anti-antigen receptor antibodies. For example, RP215 and anti-antigen receptor antibodies were found to both up-regulate TLR-2 and/or TLR-3 and down- regulate TLR-4 and TLR-9 intwo types of cancer cells. Based on these studies, it is reasonable to postulate that cancerous immunoglobulins play important roles in the modulation of the innate immune system to allow the growth and survival of cancer cells within the human body. Consequently, RP215 inits humanized forms may be utilized to target cancer cells for potential therapeutic purposes.

As the Gorge District of the Yangtze is one of the few areas in China that can deservedly boast before the world its scenic grandeur as well as beauty, it has been long felt that a systematic account of its geological conditions would open another aspect of interest to the scientific travellers. There are already on the record the observations of Pumpelly, Richthofen, Abendanon, Willis and Blackwelder, Noda and others; but the results of their work, important as they are in certain respects, seem to indicate, as a whole, little more than the broad fact that here we have a mighty sequence of rocks folded into a series of anticlines with a rather extensive exposure of a "granitic" core in the easternmost fold—the so-called Hwanglin Anticline. This anticline extends transversly from the town of Ichang to that of Tzekuei, and covers a little less than half of the distance between the first and the last points of the gorges.

The factorial structure of self-reported androgen-promoted physiological traits

Androgens make major contributions to average sex differences in anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Despite having established their crucial role in sexual differentiation, much remains to be learned about how androgens coordinate their influences. The present study was undertaken to shed light on androgenic effects on the body using self-reported survey data. We analyzed the ratings provided by over 11,000 college students on the magnitude of eleven traits that previous research has shown to be influenced by testosterone or other androgens. Predictably, the average values for all eleven traits were significantly greater in males than in females. Nevertheless, when data were analyzed separately according to sex of the respondents, some of the traits failed to positively correlate with one another, suggesting that not all an-drogen-influenced traits differentiate in a simple fashion. Factor analysis of these eleven traits by sex reinforced this view by identifying four factors. In men, the primary factor loaded most heavily on: masculine body build, masculine mannerisms, overall physical strength, upper body strength, and lower body strength. The primary factor for women was limited to: upper body strength, lower body strength, and overall physical strength. In both sexes, the primary factor was interpreted as reflecting the influence of perinatal and post-pubertal testosterone exposure. The other three factors may reflect the effects of other androgens (e.g., androstenediol), or the influence of female hormones such as estradiol. Findings were discussed in terms of future use of self-reported physiological measures for assessing androgenic effects on the human body.

Do microRNA 96, 145 and 221 expressions really aid in Lhe prognosis of prostate carcinoma？

MicroRNAs （miRs） are small noncoding RNAs that have been reported to be premising diagnostic tools. We used quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR （RT-qPCR） to analyze differentially expressed miRNAs in prostate tumor samples to determine its prognostic value. From 2007 to 2009, tumor tissues were obtained from 73 radical prostatectomy specimens. Differentially expressed miR-96, -145 and -221 were validated by TaqMan RT-qPCR using all 73 tissues. The prognostic value was assessed in terms of biochemical recurrence using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. For our patient cohort, the mean age was 64.7 years （50-76 years） and the mean prostate-specific antigen （PSA） was 7.5 ng m1-1. During the follow-up period （mean, 19.4 months）, 14 of 73 （19.2%） patients developed biochemical recurrence. Expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 correlated strongly with each other, but there were no correlations between miRNA expression and clinicopathologic parameters. Kaplan-Meier survival curves using the log-rank test showed a decreased biochemical recurrence-free interval with pathologic stage （P〈O.O01）. In addition, patients with Gleason scores over 8, compared with those with a Gleason score of 6, showed a decreased biochemical recurrence-free interval in Kaplan-Meier analysis （P=O.O01）. However, expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 did not correlate with the biochemical recurrence interval in Kaplan-Meier survival curves or by multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model, either. In conclusion, we did not observe a significant correlation between the expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 and clinicopathologic parameters. To utilize miRNA as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice, more research is needed to understand miRNA mechanisms, identify miRNA targets, and further characterize miRNA function.

The effects of single versus combined therapy using LIM-kinase 2 inhibitor and type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitor on erectile function in a rat model of cavernous nerve injury-induced erectile dysfunction

BACKGROUND Although much information is available regarding hepatitis C virus infection and diabetes,less is known about the relationship between hepatitis A virus(HAV)infection and *** To examine the roles of HAV in diabetes *** This cross-sectional study population included data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected between *** subjects(≥20 years old)with available body mass index measurements,defined diabetes status,history of HAV vaccination,and HAV serology were *** vaccination was based on self-reported *** HAV immunization was defined as the presence of both vaccination and anti-HAV *** infection was defined by the absence of vaccination but presence of anti-hepatitis A *** odds ratio(OR)for diabetes with 95%confidence intervals(95%CI)was calculated for each HAV status and then adjusted for *** tests,based on different definitions of diabetes,were performed to verify the *** Among 19942 subjects,4229 subjects(21.21%)received HAV vaccination and HAV antibody was present in 9224 subjects(46.25%).Although HAV infection was associated with an increased risk of diabetes(OR:1.13;95%CI:1.08-1.18),HAV vaccination was not associated with diabetes(OR:1.06;95%CI:0.95-1.18),and successful HAV immunization had no impact on the risk of diabetes(OR:1.11;95%CI:0.97-1.27).Thus,HAV infection was an unlikely cause of ***,in non-vaccinated subjects,diabetes increased the risk of HAV infection by 40%(OR:1.40,95%CI:1.27-1.54).CONCLUSION An association between HAV infection and diabetes is observed which is best explained by an increased risk of HAV infection in diabetic *** subjects are more susceptible to ***,HAV vaccination is highly recommended in diabetic patients.

The Hong Kong Chinese University Document Retrieval Database——The Hong Kong Newspaper Full-text Database Projeet

This project is to collect, organize, index and store full-text and graphics of selected Chinese and English newspapers currently published in Hang Kong. The end product will be an electronic database available to researchers through local area network, Internet and dial-up users. New items of the day before and up to six months will be available for online searching, via key word or subject, Earlier cumulated nateriats alone with the same indexing and searchmg software will be archived to optical media (CD ROM disks). As Itong Kong experiences rapid social, financial, conmtercial, political, educational and cultural changes, our state-of-the-art comprehensive coverage of local and regional newspapers will be a landmark contribution to information industries and researchers internationally. As the coverage of the database will be comprehensive and centralized, retrieval of news items of major Hang Kong newspapers will be fast and immtediate. Users do no need to look through daily or bi-monthly indexes in order to go to the newspapers or cuttings to obtain the hard copy, and then bring to the photocopier machine to copy,At this stage, we are hiring librarians, information specialists and support staff to work on this project. We also met and work with newspaper indexing and retrieval system developers in Beijing and Hang Kong to study cooperative systems to speed up the process. So far, we have received funding support from the Chinese University and the Hong Kong Government for two years. It is our plan to have a presentable sample database done by mid 1995, and have several newspapers indexed and stored in the structure arid for mat easy formigration to the eventual database system by the end of 1996.

We have synthesized water-stable polyaniline nanoparticles coated with tri- armed polyethylene glycol chains using a solvent-shift method and confirmed their colloidal size and aqueous solubility. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the polyaniline nanoparticles can be doped with biological dopants to produce distinct color changes allowing the detection of live cancer cells.
