Swallowing threshold param.ters of subjects with com.lete dentures and overdentures

Aim. To com.are the chewing process and swallowing threshold param.ters of subjects with com.lete dentures and overdentures with data obtained from.subjects with com.lete natural dentitions. m.tho-dology: The chewing process in term. of swallowing threshold param.ters of four groups of subjects with com.lete dentures (all fem.les) was quantified by sieving particles after chewing of an artificial test ‘food’ and com.ared with that of subjects with com.plete natural dentitions as a reference group (33 sub-jects). All subjects (except those of the reference group) had a com.lete denture in the upper jaw. Regarding the lower jaw two groups with com.lete dentures (with high (24 subjects), respectively low m.ndible (12 subjects)) and two groups with overdentures (im.lant-retained (22 subjects), respectively natural root supported (19 subjects)) were com.osed. Results: The ‘overdenture-im.lants’ group needed significantly m.re chewing cycles and tim. (m.an: 45 cycles in 32 seconds) until ‘swallowing’ com.ared to the group with com.lete natural dentitions (m.an: 26 cycles in 19 seconds until ‘swallowing’). Also the ‘com.lete denture-low m.ndible’ group needed sig-nificantly m.re cycles and tim. (m.an: 52 cycles in 44 seconds) until ‘swallowing’ than the com.lete dentition group. In the ‘overdenture-natural roots’ group these outcom.s (33 cycles in 24 seconds) were not significantly different com.ared with the com.lete dentition group. The ‘com.lete denture-high m.ndi-ble’ group (32 cycles in 26 seconds) needed not sig-nificantly m.re cycles until ‘swallowing’, however tim. until ‘swallowing’ was significantly longer com.pared to the com.lete dentition group. All denture groups had significantly larger m.an particle sizes when ‘swallowing’ (sizes in the order of 3 m.) than the natural dentition group (about 2 m.). Organosulfur com.ounds,present in *** pulp and paper industry,biogas and natural gas,need to be rem.ved as they potentially affect hum.n health and harm.the *** treatm.nt of organosulfur com.ounds is a challenge,as an econom.cally feasible technology is *** this study,we dem.nstrate that organosulfur com.ounds can be degraded to sulfide in bioelectrochem.cal system.(BESs).m.thanethiol,ethanethiol,propanethiol and dim.thyl disulfide were supplied separately to the biocathodes of BESs,which were controlled at a constant current density of 2 A/m.(2) and 4 A/m.(2).The decrease of m.thanethiol in the gas phase was correlated to the increase of dissolved sulfide in the liquid phase.A sulfur recovery,as sulfide,of 64% was found over 5 days with an addition of 0.1 m. *** recoveries over 22 days with a total organosulfur com.ound addition of 1.85 m. were 18% for m.thanethiol and ethanethiol,17% for propanethiol and 22% for dim.thyl *** sulfide was form.d in electrochem.cal nor biological control experim.nts,dem.nstrating that both current and m.croorganism. are required for the conversion of organosulfur *** new application of BES for degradation of organosulfur com.onents m.y unlock alternative strategies for the abatem.nt of anthropogenic organosulfur em.ssions.

Applicability of Dim.done Assays for the Developm.nt of Online Aldehyde Sensor in Seawater Flooding System.

Biocides are oilfield chem.cals that are widely used to control bacterial activity throughout the oil industry. A feasibility study has been explored to develop detection techniques for biocide batch treatm.nts, preferably on-line and in real-tim., for their potential use in seawater flooding system. Several m.thods to m.asure key com.onents of the biocide form.lation were investigated and reported in previous study [1]. The enzym.tic activity of an im.obilized acetylcholine esterase (AChE) on the colum. m.terial was successfully inhibited by som. m.del com.ounds, but not by the actual biocides com.only used in Saudi Aram.o seawater flooding system. In this paper, an alternative assay for biocide detection in the Saudi Aram.o seawater flooding system.was investigated for its applicability for the developm.nt of on-line biocide sensor. The assay was based on the detection of aldehyde functionality in the biocide m.xture through m.asurem.nt of a fluorescent derivative form.d in the reaction of aldehyde groups and dim.done in the presence of am.onium.acetate. The reaction of aldehyde groups with dim.done was dem.nstrated in seawater m.trix, and the form.d fluorescent product was successfully m.asured. The results showed that the dim.done-based assay was very sensitive, and relatively straightforward to perform. The ruggedness test also indicated that the assay is sensitive to m.nor changes of various specific conditions of the m.thod. It is concluded that the dim.done assay is suitable for further developm.nt of a real-tim. biocide m.nitoring system.to detect the presence of biocide slugs in seawater flooding system. The developm.nt of an autom.ted on-line biocide sensor based on dim.done assay is underway.

Recent anim.l experim.nts have shown that up to 37%of m.scle force m.y be transm.tted to adjacent structures rather than reach the insertion of the m.scle’s tendon, and that the extent of such force transm.ssion depends on the length and relative position of these structures. We tested whether the force-length characteristics of the distally tenotom.zed hum.n flexor carpi ulnaris m.scle (FCU) of nine patients with cerebral palsy varied with the change of relative length of adjacent structures induced by a change of wrist position. In four patients, the FCU exerted up to 40%m.re active force in a flexed wrist position at short FCU length, whereas the active force was not significantly higher in the other five. In the sam. m.nner, passive force-length characteristics of the spastic FCU changed upon changes in wrist position. Variability in m.ofascial force transm.ssion m.y partly explain the variability in success of the FCU-transfer.
