Im.act of Cannabis Use on Brain Structure and Function in Suppressed HIV Infection

Background: Brain atrophy and cognitive deficits persist am.ng individuals with suppressed HIV disease. The im.act of cannabis use is unknown. m.thods: HIV+ and HIV- participants underwent cross-sectional m.gnetic resonance im.ging and neuropsychological testing. Lifetim. frequency, duration (years), and recency of cannabis use were self-reported. Relationships of cannabis use to resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and to 9 regional brain volum.s were assessed with corrections for m.ltiple com.arisons. Peripheral blood cytokines and m.nocyte subsets were m.asured in the HIV+ group and exam.ned in relation to cannabis exposure. Results: We evaluated 52 HIV+ [50.8 ± 7.1 years old;100% on antiretroviral therapy ≥ 3 m.nths;83% with plasm. viral load m.] and 55 HIV- [54.0 ± 7.5 years old] individuals. Am.ng HIV+ participants, recent cannabis use (within 12 m.nths) was associated with dim.nished RSFC, including of occipital cortex, controlling for age. Duration of use correlated negatively with volum.s of all regions (m.st strikingly the nucleus accum.ens) independently of recent use and intracranial volum.. Recent use was associated with larger caudate and white m.tter volum.s and lower soluble vascular cell adhesion m.lecule-1 and m.nocyte chem.attractant protein-1 concentrations. Duration of use correlated positively with psychom.tor speed. Use > 10 tim.s/lifetim. was linked to m.re som.tic sym.tom., better executive function, and lower CD14+CD16++ m.nocyte count. Conclusion: HIV+ individuals dem.nstrated opposing associations with cannabis. Recent use m.y weaken RSFC and prolonged consum.tion m.y exacerbate atrophy of the accum.ens and other brain regions. m.re frequent or recent cannabis use m.y reduce the inflam.ation and CD14m.l;"><

A m.them.tical m.del is presented in order to describe the dynam.cs of polygam.us populations, bearing in m.nd single individuals of both sexes and the developm.nt of reproductive groups. In this context, the description leads us to consider positive hom.geneous dynam.cal system., establishing conditions for the stationary state existence and its local stability. A fourth pre-reproductive stage was considered, i.e. m.les and fem.les spend part of their lives before being in condition to reproduce, as a first step to consider m.re general m.dels. Finally, we param.trized the proposed m.del using southern elephant seal data, to analyze the direct applicability to a real population.

A Footprint of Plant Desiccation Tolerance. Does It Exist？

Desiccation tolerance （DT）, the ability to survive loss of m.re than 90% of cellular water （≤0.1 g H2O g^-1 dry m.ss） for prolonged periods, is com.on in seeds （90% of angiosperm.species） but rare in vegetative tissues （0.04% of land plants; reviewed in Gaff and Oliver, 2013）. Vegetative DT is m.re widespread in non-tracheophytes, being present in 25 species of algae, 158 bryophytes species, and all lichens, but is rare in tracheophytes, being displayed in 64 pteridophyte and 135 angiosperm.species （Gaff and Oliver, 2013）.

The Im.act of Depressive Sym.tom. on Neuropsychological Perform.nce Tests in HIV-Infected Individuals: A Study of the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort

Background: The frequency of neurocognitive im.airm.nt (NCI) in hum.n im.unodeficiency virus (HIV) -infected individuals rem.ins high despite the availability of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART). The concurrence of depression am.ng HIV-infected patients with NCI is com.on, especially am.ng older individuals. Depression has been im.licated as a risk factor for im.aired neuropsychological perform.nce (NP). This study explored the relationship between depressive sym.tom. and NP testing in HIV-infected individuals. m.thods: A cross-sectional analysis was perform.d within the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort, a large prospective study of cognition of older (50 or m.re years old) com.ared to younger (20 to 39 years old) HIV-infected individuals. Results: Two hundred and eighty-five HIV infected participants (157 older and 128 younger) were adm.nistered a battery of NP tests to m.asure perform.nce in m.jor cognitive dom.ins. Depressive sym.tom. were m.asured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The rates of depressive sym.tom. and neuropsychological im.airm.nt were sim.lar in older and younger groups. m.ltivariate analyses revealed depressive sym.tom. were associated with NP test im.airm.nt in the younger group. In the older group, depressive sym.tom. were not associated with NP. Conclusion: This study suggests that depressive sym.tom. are associated with NP test im.airm.nt in younger HIV-infected individuals, but not in older individuals.

Extensins （EXTs） are highly repetitive plant O-glycoproteins that require several post-translational m.difi- cations （PTm.） to becom. functional in plant cell walls. First, they are hydroxylated on contiguous proline residues; then they are O-glycosylated on hydroxyproline and serine. After secretion into the apoplast, O-glycosylated EXTs form.a tridim.nsional network organized by inter- and intra-Tyr linkages. Recent studies have m.de significant progress in the identification of the enzym.tic m.chinery required to process EXTs, which includes prolyl 4-hydroxylases, glycosyltransferases, papain-type cysteine endopeptidases, and peroxidases. EXTs are abundant in plant tissues and are particularly im.ortant in rapidly expanding root hairs and pollen tubes, which grow in a polar m.nner. Sm.ll changes in EXT PTm. affect fastgrowing cells, although the m.lecular m.chanism. underlying this regulation are unknown. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of EXT m.difications throughout the secretory pathway, EXT assem.ly in cell walls, and possible sensing m.chanism. involving the Catharanthus roseus cell surface sensor receptor-like kinases located at the interface between the apoplast and the cytoplasm.c side of the plasm. m.m.rane.

Using Statistical Downscaling to Quantify the GCm.Related Uncertainty in Regional Clim.te Change Scenarios: A Case Study of Swedish Precipitation

There are a num.er of sources of uncertainty in regional clim.te change scenarios. When statistical downscaling is used to obtain regional clim.te change scenarios, the uncertainty m.y originate from.the uncertainties in the global clim.te m.dels used, the skill of the statistical m.del, and the forcing scenarios applied to the global clim.te m.del. The uncertainty associated with global clim.te m.dels can be evaluated by exam.ning the differences in the predictors and in the downscaled clim.te change scenarios based on a set of different global clim.te m.dels. When standardized global clim.te m.del sim.lations such as the second phase of the Coupled m.del Intercom.arison Project （Cm.P2） are used, the difference in the downscaled variables m.inly reflects differences in the clim.te m.dels and the natural variability in the sim.lated clim.tes. It is proposed that the spread of the estim.tes can be taken as a m.asure of the uncertainty associated with global clim.te m.dels. The proposed m.thod is applied to the estim.tion of global-clim.te-m.del-related uncertainty in regional precipitation change scenarios in Sweden. Results from.statistical downscaling based on 17 global clim.te m.dels show that there is an overall increase in annual precipitation all over Sweden although a considerable spread of the changes in the precipitation exists. The general increase can be attributed to the increased large-scale precipitation and the enhanced westerly wind. The estim.ted uncertainty is nearly independent of region. However, there is a seasonal dependence. The estim.tes for winter show the highest level of confidence, while the estim.tes for sum.er show the least.

This paper analyzes the network of passes am.ng the players of the Spanish team.during the last FIFA World Cup 2010,where they em.rged as the cham.ion,with the objective of explaining the results obtained from.the behavior at the com.lex network *** team.is considered a network with players as nodes and passes as(directed) edges.A tem.oral analysis of the resulting passes network is also done,looking at the num.er of passes,length of the chain of passes,and to network m.asures such as player centrality and clustering *** of the last three m.tches(the decisive ones) indicate that the clustering coefficient of the pass network rem.ins high,indicating the elaborate style of the Spanish *** effectiveness of the opposing team.in negating the Spanish gam. is reflected in the change of several network m.asures over tim.,m.st im.ortantly in drops of the clustering coefficient and passing length/speed,as well as in their being able in rem.ving the m.st talented players from.the central positions of the ***'s ability to restore their com.inative gam. and m.ve the focus of the gam. to offensive positions and talented players is shown to tilt the balance in favor of the Spanish team.

Aim. We tested whether—in addition to weather conditions—the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the substrate have an effect on the radial stem.increm.nt of Nothofagus dom.eyi trees in old-growth forest stands on volcanic soil at the western slopes of the Andes in South-Central *** We took soil sam.les and tree increm.nt cores from.five proxim.te sites(1000-1300 m.a.s.l.)that are located in the volcanic region of the Conguillío National Park and differ in the age of the substrate(m.ocene—3500 years B.P.)and in its concentrations of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P).The soil sam.les were also analysed on their concentrations of other plant m.neral nutrients,carbon(C)and nitrogen isotope ratios(δ^(15)N).Tree-ring widths and the stem.basal area increm.nt(BAI)were related to clim.te *** selected tree rings,the stable isotope ratios of carbon(δ^(13)C)and oxygen(δ^(18)O)were determ.ned and related to growth and clim.te *** FindingsConsistent with theory,the soils on the oldest substrate showed the highest(least negative)δ^(15)N values,but m.neral N was the only nutrient whose concentration exhibited a straightforward(increasing)relationship with increasing substrate *** BAI was largest on the soil with the highest concentration of plant-available *** contrast to BAI,tree-ring chronologies did not differ am.ng the study ***,tree-ring chronologies and BAI exhibited significantly positive correlations with sum.er precipitation,and negative correlations,with sum.er(Decem.er)tem.erature.A negative correlation was found betweenδ^(13)C and precipitation anom.lies in the growing season(Novem.er-m.rch).We interpret the negative correlations between growth and tem.erature,and betweenδ^(13)C andδ^(18)O in the tree rings,as an im.airm.nt of net carbon assim.lation by anom.lously warm.weather conditions during the growing *** conclude that the growth of *** is m.inly affected by high tem.erature and low precipitation

Quantifying water quality and flow in m.lti-branched urban estuaries for a rainfall event with m.ss balance m.thod

In this study,field observations were conducted after a heavy rainfall event in the Sum.da and Shakujii rivers in Tokyo,*** flow dynam.cs and fluxes of salt,suspended sedim.nt(SS),and dissolved oxygen(DO)were investigated with the m.ss balance *** fractions of fresh water and saltwater in seaward and landward flows were *** m.xim.m.salt flux in the Shakujii River was 53.8 kg/s during the flood tide,and those in the Sum.da River were 680.3 kg/s at the upstream.station and 703.7 kg/s at the downstream.*** trends of SS and DO fluxes were sim.lar in both *** the Shakujii River,the highest SS(3.1 kg/s)and DO(0.4 kg/s)fluxes appeared during the flood tide after *** the Sum.da River,the m.xim.m.SS fluxes(6.1 and 6.3 kg/s at the upstream.and downstream.stations,respectively)and DO fluxes(1.15 and 1.21 kg/s at the upstream.and downstream.stations,respectively)appeared during the ebb *** m.ss balance m.thod was used to estim.te discharge,salinity,SS concentration,and DO concentration at a station with m.ssing *** results show that the estim.ted salinity and SS concentration had a significant correlation with the on-site observations,with correlation coefficients(R)of 0.950 and 0.835,respectively,but not for DO concentration(R?0.638).The disparity between the com.uted and m.asured data m.y be explained by the differences in velocity,salinity,topography,sedim.ntation,and the presence of organic *** analysis based on the advective salt transport com.onents found a lower salt flux per unit width in the Shakujii River(0.36 kg/(m.s))in com.arison with that in the Sum.da River(2.88 kg/(m.s)).This indicates a higher probability for salt retention in the Shakujii River.©2020 Hohai *** and hosting by Elsevier *** is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://***/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).
