Synthesis and Characterization of Heat Treated Cu-Al alloys for Energy Applications

Three alloys with different atomic percent (at. %) Cu-Al were designed and synthetized, using an electromagnetic induction furnace system. Alloys were designed in a substitutional way, varying the Al content respect to Cu, from 10 to 50 at. %. Microstructure changes from dendritic structure to equiaxed grains depending the heat treatment. Hardness test evaluation has shown values in the order of 700 kg/mm2 which represents an increment of 600 percent, while compression tests have shown an important strengthening increment. Besides, electrical resistivity test was carried out, in order to analyze a future application in an electrochemical system, obtaining an improvement three times more in comparison with the unalloyed sample. Strengthening results were interpreted in terms of defects generation, caused by the thermal treatments.

Azospirillum brasilense is a well known plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium. Plant cell growth is constrained by the primary cell wall (CW) which contains polysaccharide-bound hydroxycinammic acids (HCAs). They derive from phenylpropanoid metabolism, which first step is the reaction catalyzed by phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL;EC 4.***.1.24). Also CW peroxidases (FAPOD;EC 1.***.1.7) play a key role in the stiffening of the CW, and in the cessation of cell elongation. Knowledge of the biochemical effects the bacteria could elicit into plant CW and how these responses could change the hypocotyl physiology still remains scarce. The objective of this work was to unravel the effects of A. brasilense Sp245 inoculation on HCAs of the primary CW in apical and basal segments of cucumber seedlings hypocotyls. Azospirillum inoculation increased hypocotyls’ length. Transferulate and p-coumarate were the major HCAs. Dimmers were detected only in the basal region of 13- and 15-d-old hypocotyls. The ratio t-ferulate/dimmer (an inverse index of CW cross-linking) was five times higher in inoculated seedlings. Enzyme activities determined were not directly involved in HCAs content changes. it was previously reported that the CW was a target for A. brasilense growth promotion. This work corroborates that the phenolics, FA, DFA, and p-coumarate bound to the CW are also involved in Azospirillum plant growth promoting strategies.

Hippocampal High-Frequency Stimulation inhibites the Progression of Rapid Kindling-induced Seizure in Rats

Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological disorders. Pharmacoresistant epilepsy patients are poorly controlled or their seizures are refractory to drug treatment. Resective surgery is frequently a promising therapy in this population, however, not all the patients meet the eligibility criteria for the surgical treatment. Deep brain stimulation has been investigated in clinical studies and animal studies as an alternative treatment, but the optimal stimulation parameters remain an issue. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of unilateral high-frequency stimulation (HFS) of hippocampus on seizure development by using the hippocampal rapid kindling method (hRK) in rats, and compared the results with those of low-frequency stimulation previously published by our group. We used male Wistar rats implanted with electrodes in the ventral hippocampus. All rats underwent hRK (biphasic square wave pulses, 20 Hz for 10 seconds) during three consecutive days (twelve stimulations per day). The control group (hRK;n = 7) received only RK stimulus, while the treated group (HFS-hRK;n = 9) received also HFS (biphasic square wave pulses, 130 Hz for 30 seconds) immediately before the RK stimulus, during three consecutive days. At the end of behavioral testing 78% (p 0.01) of the animals receiving HFS treatment were still not fully kindled staying in stages 0 -iii (p 0.01). HFS group needed a higher number of stimulations to achieve stage iii (p 0.05) with respect to control group. However, no significant differences in the cumulative daily afterdischarge duration were observed. HFS did not present significant differences compared with LFS in any of studied parameters. The findings suggest that unilateral HFS applied on hippocampus effectively inhibited the epileptogenic process induced by hippocampal rapid kindling. Energy and Exergy Analysis of Moist Air for Application in Power Plants

in this study an energy and exergy analysis is made of moist air, it is used the psychometrics charts. A Visual Basic program is used to generate psychometrics charts. These charts are used to analyze the air thermodynamic behavior, considering the environmental variations, pressure, temperature and relative humidity. Also, the available energy in the cooling processes at constant enthalpy, humidification at constant temperature and heating with constant relative humidity is analyzed. For example, we obtained that the enthalpy and exergy in a thermodynamic state, with conditions, Patm = 1.013 bar, Tatm = 25oC and Φatm=50%, are h = 50.56 kJ/kga and ε =11.5 kJ/kga;and for Patm= 0.77 bar to the same conditions of Tatm and Φatm, the enthalpy and exergy increases in a 14% and 20%, respectively.

Due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotic, an increase in antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria is evolving. Attention should be focused on natural alternatives to antibiotics, like propolis, royal jelly （R J） and honeys. They all have strong antibacterial properties due to the active substances they contain. This study investigated the effect of combination of water soluble propolis （WSP） Greitl20 or fresh royal jelly （F-RJ）（MiZigoj） and Forest honeys as antibacterial against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Acinetobacter baumanii, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus （MRSA）, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae and Candida albicans. These substances are also cell growth promoters for human macrophage （TLT） cell line. WSP Greitl20, F-RJ （M） and different Forest honeys were prepared in saline as 10% solutions. The antimicrobial activity was expressed as the minimal inhibitory concentration （MiC） in mg/mL. The growth promotion activity was measured at optical density （OD） 595 nm. The combination ofWSP Greitl20 with different Forest honeys is better than F-RJ （M） in same combination with different Forest honeys. The best antibacterial/antifungal activity was found with the combination of 10% WSP Greit 120 in the Forest honey （1：10） from italy or Spain. When measuring the growth promoting activity of TLT cell line, the best activity was detected at the combination of 10% WSP Greitl20 in the Forest honey from italy （Gi3 = 0.796 ± 0.014 and Gi5 = 1.133± 0.022）. Antimicrobial and growth promoting activities are correlated and WSP-dependent.

Effect of Unilateral Low-Frequency Stimulation of Hippocampus on Rapid Kindling—induced Seizure Development in Rats

Since the last decade deep brain stimulation has been proposed as an alternative treatment for patients who do not become seizure-free with the current pharmacological treatments and cannot undergo resective surgical procedure. However, the optimal stimulation parameters remain undetermined and active research in humans and animals is necessary. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of unilateral Low Frequency Stimulation (LFS) of hippocampus on seizure development by using the hippocampal rapid kindling method (hRK) in rats. We used male Wistar rats implanted with electrodes in the ventral hippocampus. All rats underwent hRK (biphasic square wave pulses, 20 Hz for 10 seconds) during three consecutive days (twelve stimulations per day). The control group (hRK;n = 6) received only RK stimulus, while the treated group (LFS-hRK;n = 8) received also LFS (biphasic square wave pulses, 1 Hz for 30 seconds) immediately before the RK stimulus, during three consecutive days. At the end of behavioral testing on day 3, 62% (P imals receiving LFS treatment were still not fully kindled staying in stages 0-iii (P imulations needed to achieve generalized seizures (stage iV-V of Racine scale) was significantly higher (P in the LFS group with respect to control group. No significant differences in the cumulative daily afterdischarge duration were observed between both groups. These findings suggest that preemptive LFS can significantly decrease the incidence of hippocampus-kindled seizures and delay the progression and secondary generalization of focal seizures.

This research was based on the manufacture of new composite materials that offer technological possibilities in the development of new devices with greater efficiency. Electrospinning was used to form nylon 66/-tetra-(para-aminophenyl) porphyrin (H2T(p-NH2)PP)/graphene oxide (GO) composite film. Graphene oxide coatings were obtained from graphite, through mechanical exfoliation followed by calcination and ultrasonic agitation in an oxidant solution. These samples were characterized under SEM, FTiR, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis and R-X techniques. On the other hand, H2T(p-NH2)PP was synthesized in two steps?process by the Rothemun reaction and the Adler Method and it was integrated within nylon polyamide fibers by direct addition of a hexamethylenediamine/adipoyl chloride reactant mixture. The polymerization of the nylon/H2T(p-NH2)PP species occurs in such a way that it starts or ends on the four peripherals-NH2 groups, connected and located in the same molecular plane of H2T(p-NH2)PP, forming nylon chains at the periphery of the macrocycle. The association of GO with nylon/H2T(p-NH2)PP fibers is performed by dipole-dipole interaction and hydrogen bonding. To take advantage of the properties of these materials, they were combined as a ternary composite.
