Meat Quality Parameters and the Effects of Stress: A Review

The objective of this review was to address the stress effects on meat quality considering the main attributes that involve meat *** protein production has been increasing with global demand for meat with meat quality a major concern,especially for more demanding consumers who are looking for quality products to meet their *** quality of the meat is the result of what happened to the animal throughout the production chain,that is,good rearing conditions result in a better meat *** types of stress can be harmful to animals due to inadequate or improper animal handling on farms,inadequate transport conditions,poorly maintained trucks and roads,and conditions that agitate animals can lead to bruising,thermal *** stress in animals occurs when they are in adverse conditions and can significantly compromise meat quality *** an example,stress can significantly affect meat quality parameters as drip loss(DL),meat color,change ultimate pH and cause meat *** the main parameters of evaluation used for meat quality are color,characterized by luminosity(L^*,a^*,b^*),lipid and protein oxidation,pH,water holding capacity(WHC)and *** and processing high-quality meat is a challenge since it is necessary to apply methods that promote comfort in a complete sense,in a way that minimizes inducing significant *** on the results presented it is remarkable that stress alters the meat quality,compromising the main attributes that involve it,like color,pH,WHC,Warner-Bratzler shear force(WBSf),lipid oxidation,among others andis necessary to avoid or reduce stress caused during the production of the animals to ensure a high-quality meat,resulting in greater profitability for the producer.

Old climatically-buffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs):more than harsh habitats,Atlantic forest inselbergs can be drivers of evolutionary diversity

Granite-gneiss rock outcrop inselbergs are ancient stable ecosystems with old,climaticallybuffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs).Although inselbergs provide key ecosystem services,little is done for their conservation and,so far,a lot of their unknown evolutionary history has already been lost by human *** a fine-scale approach,here we tested if habitat and environmental filtering(the inselberg’s harshness)affect the evolutionary diversity of an Atlantic forest inselberg in *** recorded all trees with a diameter at breast height≥5cm in 20 plots in four habitat types(total sampled area of 0.8 hectares),from highest to lowest:island,hillside,foothill,and semideciduous forest(matrix).We also collected soil samples for chemical,textural and physical soil *** fitted linear models to test the effects of soil and habitat on plotlevel metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure,lineage diversity,phylogeneticβ-diversity,and evolutionary *** found that the upper inselberg habitats contain a distinct set of ancient,closely related,harsh-tolerant lineages,as well as a subset of lineages that persist under harsh conditions with a certain degree of water *** inferior inselberg habitats harbor higher lineage diversity than expected by *** strongly predicted evolutionary *** concluded that soil depth,slope,nutrients and texture(environmental filtering)and habitat types and topography(habitat filtering)shape the evolutionary history contained in fine-scale inselberg habitats,which should encourage the conservation of these ancient ecosystems.

Application of ventilation management programs for improved mine safety

The purpose of ventilation management systems is to ensure the health and safety of underground workers by creating and incorporating structured plans, procedures and processes on the day-to-day operations of the mine ventilation system. The application of ventilation management programs consists of audit, verification, and corrective action procedures to:(1) ensure adherence to regulatory standards,or to(2) return to compliance and safety standards when an upset condition arises. This paper describes how a ventilation management program can be developed and implemented to ensure regulation compliance, to increase safety, to improve operational efficiency and to reduce the operating costs of an operating mine. Two case applications are presented in this paper. The first case is presented to demonstrate use of a ventilation management program in response to a site inspection and audit, with follow-up application of corrective actions. The second case application describes how air quality conditions has been substantially improved with the development and implementation of a ventilation management program for an operating underground hard rock mine.

Near-infrared leaf reflectance modeling of Annona emarginata seedlings for early detection of variations in nitrogen concentration

Nitrogen(N)monitoring is essential in nurseries to ensure the production of high-quality *** spectroscopy(NIRS)is an instantaneous,nondestructive method to monitor *** data such as NIRS can also provide the basis for developing a new vegetation spectral index(VSI).Here,we evaluated whether NIRS combined with statistical modeling can accurately detect early variations in N concentration in leaves of young plants of Annona emargiaata and developed a new VSI for this *** were grown in a hydroponics system with 0,2.75,5.5or 11 mM N for 45 *** we measured gas exchange,chlorophylla fluorescence,and pigments in leaves;analyzed complete leaf nutrients,and recorded spectral data for leaves at 966 to 1685 nm using *** a statistical learning approach,the dimensionality of the spectral data was reduced,then models were generated using two classes(N deficiency,N)or four classes(0,2.75,5.5,11 mM N).The best combination of techniques for dimensionality reduction and classification,respectively,was stepwise regression(PROC STEPDISC)and linear discriminant *** was possible to detect N deficiency in seedlings leaves with 100%precision,and the four N concentrations with93.55%accuracy before photosynthetic damage to the plant ***,NIRS combined with statistical modeling of multidimensional data is effective for detecting N variations in seedlings leaves of ***.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ,ZrO_(2)-8%Y2O_(3))films were deposited onto lanthanum strontium manganite(LSM,La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3))substrates using dip-coating process aiming for the application in solid oxide fuel cells(SOfCs).YSZ precursor was prepared by sol-gel method;three values of the organic/inorganic concentration ratio(1,3 and 5)were utilized and the sol viscosity was adjusted(60 mPa·s and 100 mPa·s)before deposition on the *** influence of these synthesis parameters on the structure and morphology of the deposited films was examined by X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The films showed characteristic peaks of LSM,YSZ(with cubic structure)and secondary phases of SrZrO_(3) and La_(2)O_(3).depending on the synthesis conditions,crack-free,homogeneous and well adhered films were obtained,with thickness of 11-24μm.

Dynamics in the emergence of dormant and non-dormant herbaceous species from the soil seed bank from a Brazilian dry forest

Soil ecosystem changes by vegetation on old-field sites over five decades in the Brazilian Atlantic forest

Vegetation types alter soil ecosystems by changing soil fauna community activities and soil physi-cal-chemical ***,it is unclear how tree species(natural forest,native and exotic tree plantations)promote changes in the soil ecosystem,and if these changes alter functional groups of soil fauna and ecosystem *** determine the effects of five decades of old-field veg-etation on soil ecosystems in the Brazilian Atlantic forest,field sampling of three ecosystems(exotic tree species Pinus elliottii ***,endangered tree species Arau-caria angustifolia(Bertol.)Kuntze plantation,and a natural ecosystem)were carried out,as well using bait-lamina tests and bioassays with collembolans,earthworms and seeds of Lactuca sativa *** sampling evaluated the soil fauna community and soil physical-chemical *** bait-lamina test in situ was carried out for 14-days to deter-mine fauna feeding activity,and the bioassays evaluated the reproduction of folsomia candida,the avoidance of Eisenia andrei,and germination of *** in the soil from each *** results are:(1)vegetation type altered the soil fauna community composition;(2)soil fauna feeding was reduced in the plantations compared to the natural eco-system;(3)a physical barrier was created by recalcitrant litter that compromised fauna community structure and seed bank germination in situ;and,(4)changes in soil physical-chemical properties promoted decomposers.

Heat stress management in underground mines

Heat management must be maintained within the mine working environment to minimize stress on equipment and personnel. The issue is a growing concern as mines continue to expand in size, depth and infrastructure. Heat management is a concern as it relates to both heat sensitive equipment and more importantly the health and safety of the workers found within the mine. Proper application of engineering protocols and work practice controls will have a direct impact on the health and safety of workers and increased productivity. Using continuous monitoring stations placed in strategic locations throughout the mine to capture the environmental conditions, various strategies can be used in the planning and prevention of potential hazard exposure. Economic analysis is used to select the most feasible strategy for heat stress control. This paper presents a step by step methodology that may be considered by ventilation specialists to effectively implement a heat management control system. A case study based on a detailed heat management assessment conducted for a potash mine in Saskatchewan, Canada is presented.
