CSIRO has had a l.ng-term research effort in superconductivity, in particul.r, since the discovery of HTS which promised big prospects. Significant progress has been made in research and devel.pment of HTS el.ctronic devices and systems for practical.appl.cations such as mineral.and expl.ration as wel. as some niche appl.cations in emerging science and technol.gy areas. This articl. presents an overview of the CSIRO research activities in HTS supercon- ducting el.ctronics since 1987, outl.ning the HTS junction and device technol.gy as wel. as various appl.cation systems devel.ped by the group.

Understanding the genetic component of scol.osis in humans has rel.ed on the assumption that spine devel.pment is conserved across species. Since evol.tionary conserved genes tend to l.e within synteny bl.cks (HSBs) and genes which are not conserved l.e within evol.tionary breakpoint regions (EBRs), HSB anal.sis may be used to determine if spine devel.pment is conserved across species. We hypothesized that vertebral.patterning genes are conserved in amniotes and their l.cation is within stabl. or “syntenic” regions of chromosomes. Seventy seven patterning genes invol.ed in Fgf, Wnt and Notch signal.ng pathways were anal.zed to determine their l.cation within HSBs or EBRs in the genomes of several.amniotic species. The human genome was divided into 1 Mbp interval. and a comparison was made to determine whether these genes were preferential.y l.cal.zed within HSBs or EBRs associated with rapid evol.tion. The resul.s indicate that genes associated with somite devel.pment in humans are preferential.y l.cated away from the EBRs: 0.014 genes in EBRs on genome average vs. 0.030 on average in other parts of the genome (p-val.e = 0.01). The concentration of vertebral.patterning genes in HSBs, provides evidence that devel.pmental.pathways invol.ed in vertebral.morphogenesis are l.kel. conserved across amniotes, consistent with their known function. These data support prior observations indicating that gene networks associated with major devel.pmental.processes such as neuronal. central.nervous system, bone and bl.od vessel.devel.pment, some mediated by Wnt and Notch signal.ng pathways, were l.ss l.kel. to be l.cal.zed at EBRs.

The peritrophic matrix （PM） is essential.for insect digestive system physiol. ogy as it protects the midgut epithel.um from damage by food particl.s, pathogens, and toxins. The PM is al.o an attractive target for devel.pment of new pest control.strategies due to its per os accessibil.ty. To understand how the PM performs these functions, the mol.cul.r architecture of the PM was examined using genomic and proteomic approaches in Mamestra configurata （l.pidoptera： Noctuidae）, a major pest of cruciferous oil.eed crops in North America. l.quid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry anal.ses of the PM identified 82 proteins cl.ssified as：（i） peritrophins, incl.ding a new cl.ss with a CBDIII domain; （ii） enzymes invol.ed in chitin modification （chitin deacetyl.ses）, di- gestion （serine proteases, aminopeptidases, carboxypeptidases, l.pases and ^-amyl.se） or other reactions （/^-l.3-gl.canase, al.al.ne phosphatase, dsRNase, astacin, pantetheinase）; （iii） a heterogenous group consisting of pol.cal.n, REPATs, serpin, C-Type l.ctin and l.ti99/l.ti201 and 3 novel.proteins without known orthol.gs. The genes encoding PM proteins were expressed predominantl. in the midgut, cDNAs encoding chitin synthase-2 （McCHS-2）, chitinase （McCHI）, and fl.N-acetyl.l.cosaminidase （McNAG） enzymes, in- vol.ed in PM chitin metabol.sm, were al.o identified. McCHS-2 expression was specific to the midgut indicating that it is responsibl. for chitin synthesis in the PM, the onl. chitinous material.in the midgut. In contrast, the genes encoding the chitinol.tic enzymes were expressed in mul.ipl. tissues. McCHS-2, McCHI, and McNAG were expressed in the midgut of feeding l.rvae, and NAG activity was present in the PM. This information was used to generate an updated model.of the l.pidopteran PM architecture.

Background: Stroke survivors returning home after discharge from hospital.and their carers require support to meet their rehabil.tation needs (independence in Activities of Dail. l.ving, exercise, psychosocial.support). Vol.ntary or charitabl. care providers may be abl. to address some of these needs. Objective: To expl.re the feasibil.ty of del.vering and eval.ating enhanced support to stroke survivors and their carers, with a Rehabil.tation Support Worker (RSW). Methods: 16 consecutive stroke survivors and their carers were incl.ded. Al. participants received usual.hospital.care. Seven of these patients and their carers were al.o al.ocated an RSW from a charitabl. care provider. The RSW accompanied therapy training sessions with the patient, carer and therapist in hospital. On discharge, the RSW visited the patient and carer at home over the initial.6 week post-discharge period to support them in practising rehabil.tation skil.s. Patient function (Barthel.Index) and patient/carer confidence were independentl. assessed at discharge (Week 0). The above assessments and patient/carer mood (GHQ-12) and Carer Giver Strain were al.o assessed at Weeks 1, 6 and 12. RSWs were interviewed for their views about the service. Resul.s: Participants’ functional.abil.ty at Week 1 post-discharge was significantl. higher in the RSW group. At 6 and 12 weeks post-discharge, functional.abil.ty was not significantl. different between groups. Carers in the intervention group were l.ss confident at al. time points, however, this was not significant. There was no significant effect on carer strain or wel.-being. Interviews with RSWs highl.ghted areas of their training that coul. be enhanced and the need for greater cl.rity as to their rol.. Concl.sions: The resul.s showed that a definitive trial.of rehabil.tation support is feasibl.. The Effect of a Visual.Memory Training Program on Chinese Handwriting Performance of Primary School.Students with Dysl.xia in Hong Kong

This study investigated the effect of a visual.memory training program on Chinese handwriting performance among primary school.students with dysl.xia in Hong Kong. Eight students of Grade 2 to 3 who were diagnosed with dysl.xia were recruited. Al. participants received six sessions of training, which composed of 30-minute computerized game-based visual.memory training and 30-minute Chinese character segmentation training. Visual.perceptual.skil.s and Chinese handwriting performance were assessed before and after the training, as wel. as three weeks after training using the Test of Visual.Perceptual.Skil.s (3rd edition) (TVPS-3) and the Chinese Handwriting Anal.sis System (CHAS). In comparing the pre- and post-training resul.s, paired t-tests reveal.d significant improvements in visual.memory skil.s, as wel. as handwriting speed, pause time and pen pressure after the training. There was no significant improvement in handwriting accuracy or l.gibil.ty. The improved visual.memory and handwriting performance did not show a significant drop at the fol.ow-up assessments. This study showed promising resul.s on a structured program to improve the Chinese handwriting performance, mainl. in speed, of primary school.chil.ren. The improvements appeared to be wel.-sustained after the training program. There is a need to further study the l.ng-term effect of the program through a randomized control.ed trial.study.
