Application of Connected Truck Data to Evaluate Spatiotem.oral Im.act of Rest Area Closures on Ram. Parking

Ensuring adequate access to truck parking is critical to the safe and efficient m.vem.nt of freight traffic. There are strict federal guidelines for com.ercial truck driver rest periods. Rest areas and private truck stops are the only places for the trucks to stop legally and safely. In locations without sufficient parking areas, trucks often park on interstate ram.s, which create safety risks for other interstate m.torists. Historically, agencies have em.loyed costly and tim. intensive m.nual counting m.thods, cam.ra surveillance, and driver surveys to assess truck parking. Connected truck data, available in near real-tim., offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck parking patterns and identify areas where there m.y be insufficient safe parking spaces. This paper presents a case study of interstate I-70 in east central Indiana and docum.nts the observed spatiotem.oral im.acts of a rest area closure on truck parking on nearby interstate ram.s. Results showed that there was a 28% increase in parking on ram.s during the rest area closure. Analysis also found that ram.s closest to the rest area were m.st im.acted by the closure, seeing a rise in truck parking sessions as high as 2.7 tim.s. Parking duration on the ram.s during rest area closure also increased drastically. Although it was expected that this would result in increased parking by trucks on adjacent ram.s, this before, during, after scenario provided an ideal scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing parking characteristics of long-haul com.ercial trucks. The data analytics and visualization tools presented in this study are scalable nationwide and will aid stakeholders in inform.d data-driven decision m.king when allocating resources towards im.roving the nations com.ercial vehicle parking infrastructure.

Plastic pollution, both prim.ry and secondary, is an environm.ntal challenge, prom.ting regulatory actions at global and regional levels. With increasing research about the im.acts of m.cro- and nanoplastics on ecosystem. and hum.n health, governm.nts worldwide have undertaken efforts to address this issue. The global com.unity has advanced regulatory efforts that have led to the im.lem.ntation of national laws or regulations in num.rous countries. These m.asures ban or restrict the use of prim.ry and secondary m.croplastics and nanoplastics. An overview of global and European regulatory fram.works is presented to provide context for the United States (US). In the endeavor to docum.nt plastics regulation developm.nt in the US, a description of regulatory agencies and their roles in advancing policy and rules as well as future direction and areas for im.rovem.nt in regulating plastics are introduced. A discussion of what em.rging regulations m.an to utilities and industries is also provided along with a com.arison of regulatory fram.works.

Coronary Artery Patterns in Diabetic Patients Undergoing Diagnostic Coronary Angiography-Data from.a m.jor Cardiac Center in Yem.n

Background: Diabetes m.llitus (Dm. is independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular m.rtality and m.rbidity, including coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is a shared burden disease and the leading cause of death in developed and developing countries. We aim.d to assess the angiographic patterns of coronary arteries in patients with Dm.in a developing country (Yem.n) as the first study. m.thods: This study is a cross-sectional, prospective, observational study that includes a total of 250 patients who were adm.tted for elective diagnostic coronary angiography. Results: 96 (38.4%) patients were diabetics;68% were m.le;m.an age was 57 ± 11 years. The incidence of three-vessel disease was 31.2% of patients. Considering the severity of lum.n occlusion, (11.2%) of patients had non-significant lesions, (37.6%) of patients had significant lesions, and (32%) had total occlusive lesions. Lesions were of LAD in 76%, RCA in 60%, and LCX in 52% of the population. Am.ng diabetics, two and 3-vessel diseases (33.3% vs. 20.8% & 50% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.001), left m.in lesion (10.4% vs. 2.6%, P = 0.012), significant stenosis (41.7% vs. 35.1%, P = 0.032), total occlusion of coronary arteries (43.8% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.032) and type C lesion (66.7% vs. 35.1%, P = 0.010) were m.re frequent than non-Dm.patients. Conclusion: The burden of significant and severe coronary lesions is m.re com.on am.ng Dm. which m.y be the m.jor cause of m.rbidity and m.rtality of Dm.in developing countries.

Num.rical m.deling of m.ss Transfer in the Interaction between River Biofilm.and a Turbulent Boundary Layer

In this article dedicated to the m.deling of vertical m.ss transfers between the biofilm.and the bulk flow, we have, in the first instance, presented the m.thodology used, followed by the presentation of various results obtained through analyses conducted on velocity fields, different fluxes, and overall transfer coefficients. Due to num.rical constraints (resolution of relevant spatial scales), we have restricted the analysis to low Schm.dt num.ers (Sc=0.1, Sc=1, and Sc=10) and a single roughness Reynolds num.er (Re*=150). The analysis of instantaneous concentration fields from.various sim.lations revealed logarithm.c concentration profiles above the canopy. In this zone, the concentration is relatively hom.geneous for longer tim.s. The analysis of results also showed that the contribution of m.lecular diffusion to the total flux depends on the Schm.dt num.er. This contribution is negligible for Schm.dt num.ers Sc≥0.1, but nearly balances the turbulent flux for Sc=0.1. In the canopy, the local Sherwood num.er, given by the ratio of the total flux (within or above the canopy) to the m.lecular diffusion flux at the wall, also depends on the Schm.dt num.er and varies significantly between the canopy and the region above. The exchange velocity, a purely hydrodynam.c param.ter, is independent of the Schm.dt num.er and is on the order of 10% of in the present case. This study also reveals that nutrient absorption by organism. near the wall depends on the Schm.dt num.er. Such absorption is facilitated by lower Schm.dt num.ers.
