AIM To evaluate the sex-sp.cific effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from Eugenia p.nicifolia(HEEp. leaves on gastric ulcer *** In this rat study involving males, intact(cycling) females, and ovariectomized females, gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicle, lansop.azole, or HEEp.was administered for 14 d after ulcer induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment p.riod. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the following in vivo and in vitro investigations were p.rformed: macroscop.c examination of the lesion area and organ weights, biochemical analysis, zymograp.y, and evaluation of p.otein exp.ession levels. Additionally, the concentration-dep.ndent effect of HEEp.was evaluated in terms of subacute toxicity and *** Comp.red to the vehicle, HEEp.demonstrated a great healing cap.city by substantially reducing the ulcerative lesion area in males(52.44%), intact females(85.22%), and ovariectomized females(65.47%), confirming that HEEp.accelerates the healing of acetic acidinduced gastric lesions and suggesting that this effect is modulated by female sex hormones. The antiulcer effect of HEEp.was mediated by p.ostaglandin E2 only in male rats. Overall, the beneficial effect of HEEp.was the highest in intact females. Notably, HEEp.p.omoted the exp.ession of vascular endothelial growth factor(intact vs ovariectomized females) and decreased the exp.ession of Casp.se-8 and Bcl-2(intact female vs male or ovariectomized female). Additionally, HEEp.enhanced fibroblast p.oliferation and migration into a wounded area in vitro, confirming its healing effect. Finally, no sign of subacute toxicity or cytotoxicity of HEEp.was *** In gastric ulcers, HEEp.induced healing(modulated by female sex hormones; in males, mediated by p.ostaglandin) involves extracellular matrix remodeling, with gastric mucosa cell p.oliferation and migration.

Environmental Factors Affecting Chromium-Manganese Oxidation-Reduction Reactions in Soil

Disp.sal of chromium （Cr） hexavalent form, Cr（Ⅵ）, in soils as additions in organic fertilizers, liming materials or p.ant nutrient sources can be dangerous since Cr（Ⅵ） can be highly toxic to p.ants, animals, and humans. In order to exp.ore soil conditions that lead to Cr（Ⅵ） generation, this study were p.rformed using a p.leudult （Dystic Nitosol） from a region that has a high concentration of tannery op.rations in the Rio Crande do Sul State, southern Brazil. Three laboratory incubation exp.riments were carried out to examine the influences of soil moisture content and concentration of cobalt and organic matter additions on soil Cr（Ⅵ） formation and release and manganese （Mn） oxide reduction with a salt of chromium chloride （CrCl3） and tannery sludge as inorganic and organic sources of Cr（Ⅲ）, resp.ctively. The amount of Cr（Ⅲ） oxidation dep.nded on the concentration of easily reducible Mn oxides and the oxidation was more intense at the soil water contents in which Mn（Ⅲ/Ⅳ） oxides were more stable. Soluble organic comp.unds in soil decreased Cr（Ⅵ） formation due to Cr（Ⅲ） comp.exation. This mechanism also resulted in the decrease in the oxidation of Cr（Ⅲ） due to the tannery sludge additions. Chromium（Ⅲ） oxidation to Cr（Ⅵ） at the solid/solution interface involved the following mechanisms： the formation of a p.ecursor comp.ex on manganese （Mn） oxide surfaces, followed by electron transfer from Cr（Ⅲ） to Mn（Ⅲ or Ⅳ）, the formation of a successor comp.ex with Mn（Ⅱ） and Cr（Ⅵ）, and the breakdown of the successor comp.ex and release of Mn（Ⅱ） and Cr（Ⅵ） into the soil solution.

Road geometric design data are a vital inp.t for diverse transp.rtation studies. This information is usually obtained from the road design p.oject. However, these are not always available and the as-built course of the road may diverge considerably from its p.ojected one, rendering subsequent studies inaccurate or imp.ssible. Moreover, the systematic acquisition of this data for the entire road network of a country or even a state rep.esents a very challenging and laborious task. This study＇s goal was the extraction of geometric design data for the p.ved segments of the Brazilian federal highway network, containing more than 47,000 km of highways. It p.esents the details of the method＇s adop.ion p.ocess, the p.rticularities of its ap.lication to the dataset and the obtained geometric design information. Additionally, it p.ovides a first overview of the Brazilian federal highway network comp.sition （curves and tangents） and geometry.

Effects of Biochar on the Emissions of Greenhouse Gases from Sugarcane Residues Ap.lied to Soils

The sugar and bioethanol industry generate large amounts of filter cake and vinasse, residues that are ap.lied to sugarcane fields as conditioners and organic fertilizers. However, these may be significant sources of greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosp.ere. This study assessed the imp.ct of sugarcane straw biochar on the emissions of CO2, CH4and N2O p.omoted by filter cake and vinasse ap.lied to soil, and its effects on the chemical p.op.rties and bacterial communities of a Typ.c Hap.udox and a Quartzip.amment. A laboratory incubation was conducted for 100 days with both soils under five treatments: vinasse and filter cake amendment (FV), p.us biochar at 10 (FV + B10), 20 (FV + B20) and 50 (FV + B50) Mg·ha-1, and a control. Soil p., available p.and exchangeable base contents increased with biochar added to sandy soil. Mineral N decreased with biochar addition to both soils. The FV treatment increased CO2 emissions by 5-fold and 2.4-fold in sandy and clayey soils, resp.ctively, comp.red to the control. Moreover, FV +B10 increased CO2 emissions by 4% and 6.4% in sandy and clayey soils, resp.ctively, comp.red to FV. Cumulative N2O emissions in FV were 537% and 125% higher in sandy and clayey soils, resp.ctively, comp.red to the control. Nevertheless, increasing biochar amendment rates reduced N2O emissions from 24% to 34% in sandy soil, and from 14% to 56% in clayey soil. CH4 emissions were negligible. The effects of filter, vinasse and biochar amendments on soil amelioration were closely related to its buffering cap.city. Temp.ral changes on bacterial community structure were more p.onounced in the sandy soil comp.red to clayey, and indicated that N2O emission mitigation in clayey soil was directly related to biotic mechanisms, while abiotic mechanisms caused by biochar p.ayed a more imp.rtant role in mitigating N2O emissions in sandy soil.

Mycelial Growth of p.eurotus Sp. in Se-Enriched Culture Media

Selenium (Se) is an essential element to human. However, this element can be in low content in soil of some regions. Se deficiency may cause Keshan disease, thyroid dysfunction and osteoarthritis. The Se-enriched cereals are an interesting way to p.event these diseases. But, recent studies have shown that Se-enriched mushrooms are a better Se source. This occurs due to the high cap.city of the fungi to absorb and transform the inorganic Se to organic forms, which are more bioavailable. p.eurotus ostreatus and p.eurotus eryngii are mushrooms sp.cies worldwide consumed and able to Se bioaccumulate. However, dep.nding on the level of this element, it can be toxic for the fungus. Here we showed that the p.esence of the Se in culture medium decreases fungal growth rate, hyp.ae diameter and sep.um distance and causes alteration in color of colony. A garlic strong smell was directly p.op.rtional to Se level. p. eryngii was more tolerant to Se than p. ostreatus. So, it is imp.rtant to screen this element level for Se-enriched mushroom p.oduction.

Goat whey is an industry-discarded dairy by-p.oduct that has interesting nutritional value and a nutrient comp.sition with imp.rtant functional p.tential,where p.oteins have a high biological value and p.ay an imp.rtant role in the organism’s ***,the aim of this study was to identify,quantify,concentrate and investigate the cap.city of goat whey p.oteins to p.rform different biological activities and to evaluate their acute *** p.oteins were quantified and identified by Bradford,Kjehdal and SDS-p.GE *** activity was p.rformed against Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella sp..,Stap.ylococcus aureus,p.eudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli microorganisms and showed MIC ranging from 15 to 120μg mL-1,with the highest inhibition for *** *** activity was p.rformed against human malignant melanoma cells and their p.oliferation inhibition was up.to 66.8%within 72 h of *** highest antioxidant cap.city was obtained at concentration 2 mg that showed 29.69%of inhibition of Dp.H radical *** acute toxicity test was p.rformed using Artemia franciscana larvae in which whey p.oteins were able to p.eserve larval survival throughout ***,we can conclude that goat’s whey has p.oteins that can p.ay a p.sitive effect on health,with antimicrobial activity and without *** p.esent study highlights the great p.tential of goat’s whey to be develop.d as a safe biop.eservative or as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

Yield of cap.ule endoscop. in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding:A comp.rative study between p.emenop.usal and menop.usal women

AIM To evaluate differences in cap.ule endoscop.(CE) p.rformed in the setting of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) among p.emenop.usal women(p.W) and menop.usal women(MW).METHODS Retrosp.ctive, single-center study, including female p.tients submitted to CE in the setting of OGIB between May 2011 and December 2016. p.tients were divided into 2 group. according to age, considering fertile age as ≤ 55 years and p.stmenop.usal age as > 55 years. The diagnostic yield(DY), the rebleeding rate and the time to rebleed were evaluated and comp.red between group.. Rebleeding was defined as a drop.of Hb > 2 g/dL or need for transfusional sup.ort or p.esence of melena/*** A hundred and eighty three female p.tients underwent CE for OGIB, of whom 30.6%(n = 56) were p.W and 69.4%(n = 127) were MW. The DY was 30.4% in p.W and 63.8% in MW. The most common findings were angiodysp.asias in both group.(p.W: 21.4%, MW: 44.9%)(p.= 0.003). In p.W, only 1.8% required therap.utic endoscop.. In 17.3% of MW, CE findingsled to additional endoscop.c treatment. Rebleeding at 1, 3 and 5 years in p.W was 3.6%, 10.2%, 10.2% and 22.0%, 32.3% and 34.2% in MW. p.stmenop.usal status was significantly associated with higher DY(p.p.= 0.003), rebleeding(p.= 0.031) and lower time to rebleed(p.= 0.001).CONCLUSION p.W with susp.cted OGIB are less likely to have significant findings in CE. In MW DY, need for endoscop.c treatment and rebleeding were significantly higher while time to rebleed was lower.

The p.oduction of mushrooms enriched with essential elements, e.g. selenium, for human health is an interesting strategy to imp.ove the functional foods sup.ly. The selenium is an essential mineral and makes p.rt of structure of enzymes involved in the oxidative metabolism. However, the selenium effect on the activity of resp.ratory and lignocellulolytic enzymes has not been considered. The understanding of this effect is imp.rtant to determine the selenium concentration that increases the mushroom p.oductivity and the degradation rate of the substrate. In this study, it was observed reduction of the resp.ratory activity of Lentinula edodes (Berk.) p.gler, the shiitake mushroom, in function of the increasing of the sodium selenite concentration in the substrate (p.p.ratory activity of L. edodes has a negative correlation with sodium selenite concentration added in substrate. Thus is imp.rtant to define the ideal dose of selenium to be added to the substrate for increasing lignocellulosic residues degradation and, consequently, guarantee a higher p.oduction of Se-enriched mushrooms.

DC p.asma is a very p.omising technology for p.ocessing different materials, and is becoming esp.cially interesting when low environmental imp.ct and high-p.rformance treatments are needed. Some of the intrinsic characteristics of DC p.asma technology, which make it suitable for p.wder metallurgy （p.） and p.wder injection molding （p.M） p.rts p.oduction, are low- p.essure p.ocessing and p.asma environment high reactivity. Moreover it can be considered as a highly comp.titive green technology. In this work, an overview of some of the imp.rtant DC p.asma techniques ap.lied to p. and p.M p.rts p.ocessing is p.esented. Emp.asis is given to the descrip.ions of the main characteristics and the technique p.tentials of p.asma-assisted nitriding, p.asma-assisted thermal debinding, p.asma-assisted sintering, and simultaneously p.asma-assisted sintering and surface alloying. The asp.cts p.esented and discussed in this p.p.r indicate that DC p.asma p.ocesses are p.omising and comp.titive techniques for p. and p.M p.rts p.ocessing.
