Predicting the potential of sludge dewatering liquors to recover nutrients as struvite biominerals

Phosphorus and nutrient recovery from wastewater as mineral salts can support local replenishment of fertilisers and reduce mining,contributing to the circular *** and related streams are rich in nutrients,however;there is need to develop bio-based processes to recover *** study investigates the fractions of phosphorus(P)used by Brevibacterium antiquum to form struvite biominerals(bio-struvite)in wastewater sludge dewatering *** 72h of incubation,25.6 mg P/L were recovered as bio-struvite from 12.4 mg P/L organic plus condensed P and 13.2 mg P/L of *** potential of sludge dewatering liquors to recover nutrients as struvite was investigated by characterising ten types of sludge liquors(originating from primary,secondary sludge,feed to anaerobic digester and digestate,from 3 types of wastewater treatment plants)for their P fractions together with other parameters relevant for *** *** indicated that liquors obtained from primary sludge,feed to anaerobic digesters and digestate were the most suitable to produce biostruvite,as these were found to frequently have a high content of organic and condensed P,between to 276-732 mg P/***,from all the investigated sites,presented a higher potential for bio-struvite production than with conventional struvite *** study demonstrated that *** could convert organic and condensed P into bio-struvite,and this opens up a completely new way to recover forms of phosphorus that are not typically available for nutrient recovery in a single process.

Understanding the catalysis of chromium trioxide added magnesium hydride for hydrogen storage and Li ion battery applications

This study explores how the chemical interaction between magnesium hydride(MgH_(2))and the additive CrO_(3) influences the hydrogen/lithium storage characteristics of MgH_(2).We have observed that a 5 wt.%CrO_(3) additive reduces the dehydrogenation activation energy of MgH_(2) by 68 kJ/mol and lowers the required dehydrogenation temperature by 80℃.CrO_(3) added MgH_(2) was also tested as an anode in an Li ion battery,and it is possible to deliver over 90%of the total theoretical capacity(2038 mAh/g).Evidence for improved reversibility in the battery reaction is found only after the incorporation of additives with MgH_(2).In depth characterization study by X-ray diffraction(XRD)technique provides convincing evidence that the CrO_(3) additive interacts with MgH_(2) and produces Cr/MgO *** free energy analyses confirm the thermodynamic feasibility of conversion from MgH_(2)/CrO_(3) to MgO/Cr,which is well supported by the identification of Cr(0)in the powder by X ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)*** high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)we found evidence for the presence of 5 nm size Cr nanocrystals on the surface of MgO rock salt *** is also convincing ground to consider that MgO rock salt accommodates Cr in the *** observations support the argument that creation of active metal–metal dissolved rock salt oxide interface may be vital for improving the reactivity of MgH_(2),both for the improved storage of hydrogen and lithium.

Testicular prostheses-impact on quality of life and sexual function

Orchiectomy is the recommended treatment for many testicular ***,testicular prosthesis placement is not always performed for different *** this study,we aimed to evaluate patients'opinions and the impact on sexual function and quality of *** retrospective observational single-center study included patients who underwent orchiectomy between January 2014 and December 2020 at the Department of Urology,Braga's Hospital(Braga,Portugal),where testicular implants were always available and the decision to undergo the procedure was made fully independent of *** completed four questionnaires that assessed demographic data,satisfaction,self-esteem,and sexual *** the 96 patients who underwent orchidectomy,59 replied to the questionnaires,and of these patients,86.4%decided to undergo silicone-based testicular prostheses *** remaining 13.6%refused the implant based on concerns about complications(37.5%),because they felt that it was unnecessary(37.5%),or because it was not offered by the doctor(25.0%).Overall,96.1%of these patients were satisfied with the implant;however,25.5%classified it as"too firm".No statistically significant differences were found in sexual function(all P>0.05).However,it can be observed that there are more patients with prostheses presenting normal sexual activity compared to patients without prostheses(74.0%vs 50.0%),and none of them reported severe erectile dysfunction(0 vs 16.7%).Regarding self-esteem,both patients with and without prostheses present very similar average scores with no statistically significant *** present study highlights the highest level of satisfaction among patients who received testicular *** prostheses implantation is a safe procedure that does not hamper sexual function after orchiectomy.

The ability of endothelial cells to respond to blood flow is fundamental for the correct formation and maintenance of a functional and hierarchically organized vascular *** flow responses,in particular related to high flow conditions,have been associated with atherosclerosis,stroke,arteriovenous malformations,and neurodegenerative ***,the molecular mechanisms involved in high flow response are still poorly ***,we described the development and validation of a 96-wells fluidic system,with interchangeable cell culture and fluidics,to perform high-throughput screenings under laminar high-flow *** demonstrated that endothelial cells in our newly developed 96-wells fluidic system respond to fluid flow-induced shear stress by aligning along the flow direction and increasing the levels of KLF2 and *** further demonstrate that our 96-wells fluidic system allows for efficient gene knock-down compatible with automated liquid handling for high-throughput screening ***,we propose that this modular 96-well fluidic system is an excellent platform to perform genome-wide and/or drug screenings to identify the molecular mechanisms involved in the responses of endothelial cells to high wall shear stress.

Review:Fabrication and Application of Zwitterion-based Functional Coatings

Zwitterion-based materials by virtue of their special physical and chemical characteristics have attracted researchers to utilize them for fabricating functional coatings. The simultaneous presence of positive and negative charges renders the zwitterion-based materials with electrostatically induced hydration properties, which enables a high resistance towards oily pollutants, nonspecific protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. This review starts from the working mechanism of zwitterions and covers the fabrication strategies of zwitterion-based functional coatings, namely the zwitterion-bearing binder route, the zwitterion-bearing additive route and the post-generation of coatings containing zwitterionic precursors. The applications of zwitterion-based functional coatings are discussed, including medical implants, marine antifouling and oil-resistant coatings, with focus on the relevant mechanisms of the zwitterion-containing coatings for a specific performance. Finally, some comments and perspectives on the current situation and future development of zwitterion-based functional coatings are given.

BACKGROUND Appendiceal tumors are rare lesions that may not be easily differentiated from primary ovarian lesions preoperatively,despite the use of advanced diagnostic methods by experienced *** SUMMARY A 59-year-old G2P2 woman,with chronic pelvic pain,underwent a pelvic ultrasound that revealed an adnexal mass measuring 58 mm×34 mm×36 mm,with irregular borders,heterogeneous echogenicity,no color Doppler vascularization and without acoustic *** ovarian tissue was visualized in contact with the lesion,and it was impossible to separate the lesion from the ovary by applying pressure with the ultrasound ***,peritoneal metastases or other alterations were not *** the international ovarian tumor analysis ADNEX model,the lesion was classified as a malignant tumor(the risk of malignancy was 27.1%,corresponding to Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting Data System category 4).Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the presence of a right adnexal mass,apparently an ovarian tumor measuring 65 mm×35 mm,without signs of invasive or metastatic *** explorative laparotomy,normal morphology of the internal reproductive organs was noted.A solid mobile lesion involved the entire *** was *** of the abdominal cavity revealed no signs of malignant ***,the appendiceal lesion corresponded to a completely resected low-grade mucinous appendiceal neoplasm(LAMN).CONCLUSION The appropriate treatment and team of specialists who should provide health care to patients with seemingly adnexal lesions depend on the nature(benign vs malignant)and origin(gynecological vs nongynecological)of the ***,gynecologists and other pelvic surgeons should be familiar with the imaging signs of LAMN whose clinical presentation is silent or *** assistance of a consultant specializing in intestinal tumors is important support that gynecological surgeons can receive during the operation

Environmental changes derived from global warming and human activities increase the intensity and frequency of stressful conditions for *** abiotic factors acting simultaneously enhance stress pressure and drastically reduce plant growth,yield,and *** combination causes a specific stress situation that induces a particular plant response different to the sum of responses to the individual ***,by comparing transcriptomic and proteomic profiles to different abiotic stress combinations in two citrus genotypes,Carrizo citrange(Citrus sinensis×Poncirus trifoliata)and Cleopatra mandarin(Citrus reshni),with contrasting tolerance to different abiotic stresses,we revealed key responses to the triple combination of heat stress,high irradiance and *** specific transcriptomic response to this stress combination in Carrizo was directed to regulate RNA metabolic pathways and translation processes,potentially conferring an advantage with respect to *** addition,we found endoplasmic reticulum stress response as common to all individual and combined stress conditions in both genotypes and identified the accumulation of specific groups of heat shock proteins(HSPs),such as small HSPs and HSP70s,and regulators of the unfolded protein response,BiP2 and PDIL2-2,as possible factors involved in citrus tolerance to triple stress *** together,our findings provide new insights into the acclimation process of citrus plants to multiple stress combination,necessary for increasing crop tolerance to the changing climatic conditions.

Transplanting embryonic stem cells onto damaged human corneal endothelium

AIM To investigate whether human embryonic stem cells(hesCs) could be made to attach, grow and differentiate on a human Descemet's membrane(DM).METHODS Spontaneously differentiated hesCs were transferred onto a human corneal button with the endothelial layer removed using ocular sticks. The cells were cultured on a DM for up to 15 d. The genetically engineered hesC line expressed green fluorescent protein, which facilitated identification during the culture experiments, tissue preparation, and analysis. To detect any differentiation into human corneal endothelial-like cells, we analysed the transplanted cells by immunohistochemistry using specific *** We found transplanted cells form a single layer of cells with a hexagonal shape in the periphery of the DM. The majority of the cells were negative for octamer-binding transcription factor 4 but positive for paired box 6 protein, sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase(NaKATPase), and Zona Occludens protein 1. In four of the 18 trials, the transplanted cells were found to express CK3, which indicates that the stem cells differentiated into corneal epithelial cells in these cases. CONCLUSION It is possible to get cells originating from hesCs to become established on a human DM, where they grow and differentiate into corneal endothelial-like cells in vitro.
