Adam Smith and Confucius： A Tour d＇Horizon Towards a Transcultural Foundation of Institutions

Recently, economists have rediscovered the fact of the cultural embeddedness of institutions. This raises the question whether there are transcultural universals of institutions and institutional design. The paper proposes that such universals cannot possibly be empirical givens, but have to be continuously created through transcultural discourse. I take a first step by putting family resemblances in the moral and social philosophy of Adam Smith and the Confucians into the context of the evolution of Western culture and economics. The tour d＇horizon starts with the thesis that the biased perception of Smith（ neglecting the moral philosopher） in economics mirrors its cultural embeddedness into what sociologist Norbert Elias has called the ＂homo clausus＂ construct in Western societies. I continue with a survey of most recent research in behavioural, institutional, and evolutionary economics which clearly prove the fallacies of the ＂homo clausus＂ assumptions of individual autonomy. This explains the recent revival of interest in the ＂Theory of Moral Sentiments＂ on part of economists. Indeed, many Smithian insights can be supported by the recent advances in economic research. One fascinating implication is that opening up a transcultural discourse between Western and Eastern moral philosophy might show the way towards a transcultural foundation of institutions. A number of ＂family resemblances＂ between Smith and Confucius are presented. I conclude by highlighting some contentious issues between China and the West in the global economy, where the transition to a moral economy with Smithian and Confucian foundations might help to find workable solutions.

Initial joint bleed volume in a delayed on-demand treatment setup correlates with subsequent synovial changes in hemophilic mice

Background: Hemophilic arthropathy is a debilitating morbidity of hemophilia caused by recurrent joint bleeds. We investigated if the joint bleed volume, before initiation of treatment, was linked to the subsequent degree of histopathological changes and the development of bone pathology in a mouse model of hemophilic ***: FVIII knock-out(F8-KO) mice were dosed with a micro-CT blood pool agent prior to induction of hemarthrosis. Eight hours after induction, the bleed volume was quantified with micro computed tomography(micro-CT) and recombinant FVIII treatment initiated. On Day 8, inflammation in the knees was characterized by fluorescence molecular tomography. On Day 14, knee pathology was characterized by micro-CT and histopathology. In a second study, contrast agent was injected into the knee of wild-type(WT) mice, followed by histopathological evaluation on Day ***: The average joint bleed volume before treatment was 3.9 mm3. The inflammation-related fluorescent intensities in the injured knees were significantly increased on Day 8. The injured knees had significantly increased synovitis scores, vessel counts, and areas of hemosiderin compared to un-injured knees. However, no cartilage-or bone pathology was observed. The bleed volume before initiation of treatment correlated with the degree of synovitis and was associated with high fluorescent intensity on Day 8. In F8-KO and WT mice, persistence of contrast agent in the joint elicited morphological ***: When applying a delayed on-demand treatment regimen to hemophilic mice subjected to an induced knee hemarthrosis, the degree of histopathological changes on Day 14 reflected the bleed volume prior to initiation of treatment.

Sodium salts of mono-and di-carboxylic acids(glycolic,fumaric and benzoic acid)were studied as corrosion inhibitors for AM50 alloy in pH neutral aqueous NaCl *** evolution,electrochemical and surface characterization techniques were employed to reveal their corrosion inhibition mechanism,whilst the molecular features of inhibitors were investigated by quantum chemical *** inhibitors reduced anodic dissolution of AM50 and their efficiency generally increased with time and concentration from 5 mM to 100 *** inhibition mechanism can be described as physisorption of inhibitive molecules on the surface of the intrinsic oxide layer followed by chemisorption with Mg^(2+)and Al^(3+),and the difference in inhibition action among these inhibitors was explained on the molecular scale.

Impact of pain on health-related quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM: To evaluate intensity, localization and cofactors of pain in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients in connection with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and disease activity. METHODS: We reviewed and analyzed the responses of 334 patients to a specifically designed questionnairebased on the short inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (SIBDQ) and the German pain questionnaire. Pain intensity, HRQOL, Crohn’s disease activity index (CDAI) and colitis activity index (CAI) were correlated and verified on a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: 87.9% of patients reported pain. Females and males reported comparable pain intensities and HRQOL. Surgery reduced pain in both genders (P = 0.023), whereas HRQOL only improved in females. Interestingly, patients on analgesics reported more pain (P = 0.003) and lower HRQOL (P = 0.039) than patients not on analgesics. A significant correlation was found in UC patients between pain intensity and HRQOL (P = 0.023) and CAI (P = 0.027), and in CD patients between HRQOL and CDAI (P = 0.0001), but not between pain intensity and CDAI (P = 0.35). No correlation was found between patients with low CDAI scores and pain intensity. CONCLUSION: Most IBD patients suffer from pain and have decreased HRQOL. Our study reinforces the need for effective individualized pain therapy in IBD patients.
