Mining Implication in the Geochemical Exploration of Fluvial Sediments of the East Nyambaka Volcanic Zone (Adamawa-Cameroon)

Geochemical characterization in stream sediments from Nyambaka locality was carried out on ten samples collected from the study area watershed. The distribution of trace metals in the sediments showed that some lithophiles (Be, Sc, V, Cr, Sr, Th, U), chalcophiles (Cu, Zn, Ga, As) and siderophiles (Mn, Co, Ni, Mo) have high average contents in the sediments compared to their average concentration in the upper crust. From the factorial analysis of the components, the total variance explained made it possible to represent and capture the main information on the data and to represent them in a graphical frame. Thus, using this graphical frame, the trace elements were divided into four groups opposed to each other. They show an enrichment of stream sediments in group 1 (Cr, Cu, Mn, Be, Ni, Co, Zr, Sr, Ba, Mg) and group 2 (Mo, As, Hg, V, Ag) elements more than group 3 (Ga, Sc, U) and group 4 (Au, Th). Rare earth analysis indicates a high abundance of Lanthanide (28.1 ppm to 42.4 ppm), a high concentration of light rare earth (LREE), and depletion of heavy rare earth (HREE). The variable LREE/HREE (7.24 LREE/ HREE 12.22) and (La/Yb)N (6.70 (La/Yb)N 11.72) ratios suggest an effect of heterogeneous sorting of heavy minerals with variable enrichment of dense and resistant minerals.

Understanding the immune responses elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection is critical in terms of protection against reinfection and,thus,for public health policy and vaccine development for *** this study,using either live SARS-CoV-2 particles or retroviruses pseudotyped with the SARS-CoV-2 S viral surface protein(Spike),we studied the neutralizing antibody(nAb)response in serum samples from a cohort of 140 SARS-CoV-2 qPCR-confirmed infections,including patients with mild symptoms and also more severe forms,including those that required intensive *** show that nAb titers correlated strongly with disease severity and with anti-spike IgG ***,patients from intensive care units exhibited high nAb titers;conversely,patients with milder disease symptoms had heterogeneous nAb titers,and asymptomatic or exclusive outpatient-care patients had no or low *** found that nAb activity in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients displayed a relatively rapid decline after recovery compared to individuals infected with other ***,we found an absence of cross-neutralization between endemic coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2,indicating that previous infection by human coronaviruses may not generate protective nAbs against ***,we found that the D614G mutation in the spike protein,which has recently been identified as the current major variant in Europe,does not allow neutralization ***,our results contribute to our understanding of the immune correlates of SARS-CoV-2-induced disease,and rapid evaluation of the role of the humoral response in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 is warranted.

Neonatal Transfer Situation Following Implementation of a Perinatal Network: An Analysis in Douala, Cameroon

Background: Postnatal transfer (PT) is interhospital transport of care-needing newborns. In 2016, a perinatal network was implemented to facilitate PT in the town of Douala, Cameroon. The network was supposed to improve PT-related care standards. This study aimed at determining characteristics of PT five years following the implementation of this network. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from February to May 2021 at neonatology wards of six hospitals in Douala. Medical records of newborns transferred to the hospitals were scrutinized to document their characteristics. Parents were contacted to obtain information on PT route and itinerary. Data were analyzed using Epi Info software and summarized as percentages, mean and odds ratio. Results: In total, 234 of the 1159 newborns admitted were transferred, giving a PT prevalence of 20.2% (95% CI 17.9% - 22.6%). Male-to-female ratio of the transferred newborns was 1.3. Neonatal infection (26.5%), prematurity (23.5%) and respiratory distress (15.4%) were the main reasons for transfer. Only 3% of the PT was medicalized while only 2% of the newborns were transferred through perinatal network. On admission, hypothermia and respiratory distress were found in 31% and 35% of the newborns, respectively. The mortality rate among babies was 20% and these had a two-fold risk of dying (95% CI 1.58 - 3.44, p Conclusion: PT and the perinatal network are lowly organized and implemented in Douala. Sensitization of medical staff on in utero transfer, creating center for coordination of the network, and implementation of neonatal transport system could improve the quality of PT.

Clinical, Psycho-Social and Metabolic Profile of Women with Hirsutism in Yaounde

Background: Hirsutism is a clinical situation in Cameroon which is poorly elucidated due to a paucity of clinical and biological data;hence our interest in this study. The aim of this work was to describe the clinical, psycho-social and metabolic profile of women with hirsutism in Yaoundé. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out from May 2013 to December 2013. Participants were recruited by announcement through social media. Our study included women at least 18 years old, not in menopausal, not pregnant, not breastfeeding, with hirsutism regardless of severity. They were assessed through an interrogation, anthropometric parameters, a physical examination using the modified Ferriman and Gallwey score, the measurement of fasting capillary blood glucose and a lipid profile. The psycho-social assessment was carried out using a pre-designed questionnaire on the participant’s perception and daily experience with hirsutism. The metabolic syndrome was established according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation of 2005 and the National Cholesterol Education Program-third adult treatment panel of 2001. Results: We recruited 60 women aged 27.6 ± 7.0 years. The median Ferriman and Gallwey score was 12. The mean duration of evolution was 9 years. A family history of hirsutism was found in 88.8% of the participants, especially in the mother. Signs of virilization were found in 3.3% of the participants. Association was found between menstrual cycle abnormalities and severity of hirsutism (p = 0.023). Psycho-socially, 58.8% of women found hirsutism normal. The metabolic syndrome was found in 21.7% and 18.3% according to the IDF and NCEP-ATP III, respectively. Conclusion: Hirsutism in our context seems normal to most of our participants. It is, however, associated with menstrual irregularities, signs of virilization and metabolic syndrome. As a result, hirsutism merits further study on a large-scale with emphasis on etiology

During pregnancy, the hematological system undergoes numerous changes so as to meet up with the demands of the developing fetus and placenta, with major alterations in blood volume and this differs with women from different regions. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the hematological parameters and risk factors for anemia among pregnant women according to different trimesters of pregnancy in Douala, Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to May 2017, and all pregnant women who attended antenatal visits during our study period and who suited our inclusion criteria were recruited. The study was carried out in the antenatal care Unit of the Douala Laquintinie Hospital (DLH). A pretested questionnaire was used for the necessary data collection. Venous blood was collected from each of these women to perform a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test using an automated hematological analyzer (URIT 3010). Data were analyzed using XLSTAT 2007 and Stata version 11 software. Results: The mean age of the participants was 28 (SD = 5 years). The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women was 22% with a majority (18.4%) of these women being mildly anemic. Mean Hemoglobin values were significantly higher among women in first trimester compared to the third (12.1 ± 0.9 g/dl vs 11.8 ± 1.3 g/dl;p = 0.043). There was also a significant change in mean hematocrit (HCT) values between the first and second trimester (32.8% ± 2.5% vs 31.4% ± 2.9%, p = 0.004) and between the first and third trimester (32.8% ± 2.5% vs 30.8% ± 3.5%, p -4). RBC count value was higher in the first trimester than in the second trimester (3.7 ± 0.3 × 1012/L vs 3.5 ± 0.4 × 1012/L, p -4) and in the third trimester (3.7 ± 0.3 × 1012/L vs 3.5 ± 0.4 × 1012/L, p = 0.001). Evaluation of the Physical Fitness of the Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Necessity for the Prescription of Adapted Physical Activity

Background: Diabetes mellitus and physical inactivity are modifiable risk factors for stroke. Physical activity is one of the pillars of type 2 diabetes management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical fitness of a sample of type 2 diabetes patients at the CHU of Martinique (UHCM). Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study, from 1st June to 30th September 2018. It consisted of the exhaustive prospective collection of data on the usual physical activity and physical fitness of type 2 diabetic patients hospitalized in the Endocrinology department of the UHCM for a short stay. The physical fitness tests of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, validated on 13 April 2013, were used. Results: Thirty patients were included in the study. The mean age was 51.9 ± 11 years. The sex ratio was 1.5, and hypertension in 53% (n = 16) of patients was the most associated risk factor. The median duration of diabetes progression was 4 years with Q1 and Q2 quantiles of 2 and 10 years, respectively. The physical fitness evaluation noted a balance disorder with a risk of falling in 56.7% (n = 17) of patients, muscle stiffness in 20% (n = 6) of them, while 56.7% (n = 17) and 80% (n = 24) had a decrease in the muscular strength of the upper and lower limbs, respectively. The distance covered during the standard 6 min walking test was normal for 70% (n = 21) of the patients. Conclusion: The evaluation of the patient’s physical fitness allows us to assess their deconditioning to physical activity and other obstacles to physical activity to plan appropriate interventions.
