Mutiparametric Characterization of Atmospheric Particulate in a Heavy-Polluted Area of South Italy

To obtain a real-time image of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in highly polluted areas and to understand how the anthropogenic component linked to urban activities (industrial activities, domestic heating, road traffic, waste disposal) can locally affect near-surface measurement of PM, several measurement campaigns were achieved in the Campania region (Southern Italy) using both Lidar and in-situ instruments. A comparison between the obtained results highlights a good correlation between the data and the potential of remote sensing instruments for air quality monitoring. Data analysis was performed in terms of particle backscattering coefficient profile at 355 nm, PM mass concentration, and size distribution. Wind profiles, which covered a range of altitudes from 40 m to 290 m, were also used to study sources and physical processes involved. Measurement carried out in a rural area with a landfill site highlighted the presence of a homogeneous particulate layer throughout the sounded area due to winds driving aerosol from the landfill to the surrounding areas. The size distribution in mass concentration, highlighted a modal diameter moving towards 0.9 and 2 μm with a larger mass concentration of particles in the morning, before noon and in the afternoon when a large number of trucks delivered solid wastes. Moreover, large concentrations of particulate matter were measured in a small urban town with few industrial activities which peak (211 ± 33 μg·m-3) was measured in the direction of the most urbanized area, probably due to the lighting of the domestic heating systems. Bimodal size distribution in number concentration was measured, indicative of two types of atmospheric particles sources: gas and liquid combustion (particles with sizes below 80 nm), including vehicular traffic and domestic gas-heating, and biomass combustion (particles with sizes of the order of 200 - 500 nm). Cholesterol or Fat Rich Diets Accelerate Natural Age-decline on Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Have an Impact in Memory and Like-Anxiety Behavior

Diet is an important health factor and it has been recently associated with neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. Here it was investigated the effect of fatty acid or cholesterol rich diets with the possible acceleration of the biological decline in adult hippocampal neurogenesis associated with aging in middle-age rats, and its impact on anxiety and memory function. It was found that a diet of 10 weeks with saturated fatty acids and cholesterol has a detrimental effect on memory function, exerts like-anxiety behavior and diminishes the presence of new generated neurons in the hippocampus in six months old rats.

Effect of Incorporating Free or Encapsulated Ascorbic Acid in Chicken Frankfurters on Physicochemical and Sensory Stability

Sodium erythorbate, antioxidant and curing accelerator, used in meat products, have no vitamin functionality. Ascorbic acid （AA）, in contrast, is a powerful antioxidant, but very unstable. The application of encapsulated AA in frankfurters could allow the incorporation of an antioxidant with vitamin functionality and improved stability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application ofAA microcapsules in frankfurters and the effects of their application on the product. Different analyses were conducted. The values obtained for mass loss, moisture content, water activity, pH and instrumental color were not significantly different among the treatments. The frankfurters containing the microcapsutes exhibited the lowest hardness value （approximately 5,000 g）, resulting in better scores in the sensory analysis. It was possible to apply the AA microcapsules without compromising the oxidative stability and physicochemical characteristics of the product, providing a promising method for protecting AA and producing fortified frankfurters.

The biological properties of therapeutic peptides,such as their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics,are correlated with their structure and aggregation ***,we studied the aggregation properties of a therapeutic peptide(CIGB-814),currently in phase 2 clinical trial,for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis over a wide range of concentrations(μM-mM).We applied spectroscopic techniques(fluorescence,circular dichro-ism,resonance,and dynamic light scattering),atomic force microscopy,and molecular dynamics simulations to determine the aggregation mechanism of *** found that the hierarchical aggregation of CIGB-814 at micromolar concentrations was initiated by the formation of peptide ***,the peptide oligomers trigger the nucleation and growth of peptide nanostructures(cac=123μM),ultimately leading to the fibrillization of CIGB-814(cac’=508μM).These results pave the way for a deeper understanding of the CIGB-814 therapeutic activity and may give important insights on its pharmacokinetics.

Prevention Strategies of Contrast Medium Induced Nephropathy (CIN): A Review of the Current Literature

Contrast medium induced nephropathy is the third most common cause of renal failure for inpatients and represents the 10% of all acute kidney injury occurring during hospital-stay. It is associated with prolonged hospitalization, cost increase and, above all, an unfavourable short- and long-term prognosis. Here, the authors discuss about the contrast medium induced nephropathy prevention strategies, from the identification of patients at risk and drugs potentially nephrotoxic, to the hydration with possible administration of drugs that appeared to be, in some contexts, nephron-protective, and finally we analyze the radiological procedure aimed at the correct choice of type and administration modality of the contrast medium according to current literature.

Alkaline phosphatase-positive cells isolated from human hearts have mesenchymal stem cell characteristics

Tissue-specific resident cells have been identified as a promising population of progenitor cells for cell-based therapies. We describe here the isolation from adult human hearts of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase-positive cells (ALPL+ cells) with mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) characteristics. Samples from 24 adult cadaveric donors were obtained from a valve bank. Mean total ischemia time was 21.5 ± 9.1 hours. The success rate for the isolation of human heart-derived cells by the explant culture technique was 70% for the right auricle (14 of 20 trials) and 33% for the right ventricle (7 of 21 trials). The total auricle-derived cell population (TAD) was used for the purification of ALPL+ cells. TAD and ALPL+ cells expressed markers for MSC and pericytes. TAD cells and ALPL+ cells differentiated into adipocytes, osteoblasts and chondroblasts, and ALPL+ cells expressed markers of these three lineages more strongly than TAD cells, as shown by RT-PCR. This population therefore has a greater potential for differentiation into mesechymal lineages than TAD cells. Both cell populations express some markers of cardiac progenitors, such as GATA4, CD117 and VEGF. ALPL+ cells expressed troponin T and ABCG2, which are also markers of the cardiac lineage. Heart samples from tissue banks could be considered as sources of MSC with putative commitment towards cardiac lineages, even after prolonged ischemia times.

The airborne pollutants monitoring is an overriding task for humanity given that poor quality of air is a matter of public health, causing issues mainly in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, specifically the PM10 particle. In this contribution is generated a base model with an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which is later optimized, using a swarm intelligence technique, named Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA). Several experiments were carried with BFOA parameters, tuning them to achieve the best configuration of said parameters that produce an optimized model, demonstrating that way, how the optimization process is influenced by choice of the parameters.

Effect of Cholesterol Enriched or Fatty-Acid Diets on Cholesterol and Lipid Levels in Young Wistar Rats

Nutritional intake is a fundamental determinant of health. It is well known that cholesterol rich diets can induce several pathological conditions but detailed mechanism underlying these remains unknown. Wistar rats, an animal strain widely used in the research have been employed to study the effects of dietary interventions due to their metabolic characteristics, which are closer to the human compared to mice. The effect of some components of the western diet, combined with cholesterol in the lipid profile have been studied, but the impact of only cholesterol or fatty-acid diets in such a profile has not been yet characterized. Here we measured the effect of 6 or 16 weeks of dietary intervention with cholesterol enriched diet (CED) or fatty-acid diet (FAD) on cholesterol, triglyceride levels, high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL). We observed significant differences in body weight only in animals treated with CED or FAD from Week 9 onwards as compared to animals fed the control diet. There were no differences between animals fed with CED or FAD in cholesterol levels at any time point nevertheless, triglyceride levels were significantly increased as compared to control diet in animals under both diets at early time points. Finally, both CED and FAD induced a decrease in HDL as compared to control levels in treatments of more than 6 weeks, whereas LDL transiently increased in animals treated with FAD from 10 to 12 weeks, but after this period LDL levels returned to baseline, suggesting that young rats have a compensatory effect at least for the period of time analyzed here. Here we provide a temporal course on lipid profile of cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDH in Wistar rats treated with CED and FAD diet that can be useful as reference for future studies.
