Deforestation and fragm.ntation of tropical forest are the m.st serious threats to biodiversity. In the lowlands of the Huasteca Potosina region, m.xico, m.re than 95,000 ha of tropical forest have disappeared. This paper analyses tree species com.osition in tropical forest patches of this highly deforested region, located in northeast of m.xico. At present, only 57 rem.ants of arboreal vegetation larger than ten hectares still rem.in standing, which cover 6117 ha. These decreasing fragm.nts host 140 floristic species, representing 42 fam.lies and 85 genera. Com.ared with previous inventories, these data show a sharp drop in species com.osition. m.st of the forest rem.ants contain less than 50% of the floristic diversity recorded by previous surveys, particularly in the m.dium.subperennial tropical forest.

Polyphenolic com.ounds, widely distributed in plant kingdom. have been exhaustively studied for their bioactive properties specially antioxidant activity. However, they are extensively m.tabolized by hum.n organism.and the resulting m.tabolites are largely responsible for their effects. Furtherm.re, they m.y interact with the endogenous antioxidant network being this possibility scarcely studied. Plasm. antioxidant network encom.asses antioxidant enzym.s and other substances such as uric acid. In addition, ascorbic acid is the m.jor com.ound representing water soluble com.artm.nt both in foods and hum.n body. The interaction of this vitam.n with phenolic com.ound is largely unexplored. This work aim. to study if there is a synergic effect between phenolic m.tabolites and m.in antioxidants (uric and ascorbic acid). For this purpose, the antioxidant activity was evaluated in term. of ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) and FRAP (ferricreducing antioxidant power) as these tests involved either HAT (Hydrogen Atom.Transfer) or SET (Single Electron Transfer) m.chanism.. Additionally, a kinetic studied was developed to test if the rate constant presented a synergic effect. Protocatechuic acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid were selected as they were m.tabolites of polyphenol com.ounds such as anthocyanins, quercetin, neohesperidin, chlorogenic acid and hesperetin present in wines, orange and strawberries. A synergic effect was proved for the com.ination of ascorbic acid with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, both in term. of antioxidant activity and potent increase of velocity of the antioxidant reaction that took place.

AIm. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of glaucom. drainage device Ex-PRESS~ P-50 for com.ined cataract surgery and glaucom..·m.THODS： Patients having cataract and open angle glaucom. or patients with open advanced glaucom. which needed two or m.re antiglaucom. m.dications were included. Com.ined cataract surgery and glaucom. with Ex-PRESS~ P-50 m.del placed under scleral flap was perform.d.·RESULTS： Out of 40 eyes of 40 patients（55% m.le and45% fem.le） com.leted the study during one-year follow-up. The m.an of age was 76.6 ±11.02 y. The intraocular pressure（IOP） decreased significantly during the 12-m.nth follow-up from.23.5 m. Hg to 16.8 m. Hg（Wilcoxon signed ranks test, P 〈0.001）. A 59.5% of patients did not need any topical treatm.nt, 10.8% of them.needed one active principle, 27% needed two active principles, and 2.7% of them.needed three active principles for successful IOP control（〈21 m. Hg）.·CONCLUSION：Com.inedsurgeryofphacoem.lsification with Ex PRESS~ P-50 lowers IOP from.the preoperative baseline and reduces significantly the num.er of antiglaucom. active principles for IOP control after the operation.

To find if ornam.ntal plants are applicable to the rem.diation of m.tal-polluted areas, the tolerance of chrysanthem.m.plants （Chysanthem.m.m.xim.m. var. Shasta to different m.tals under hydroponic conditions was studied. Their responses as influenced by the m.corrhizal fungus Glom.s m.sseae （Nicol. ＆ Gerd.） Gerdem.nn ＆ Trappe BEG25 on substrates containing m.ne residues were also investigated. Our results showed that chrysanthem.m.is a m.tal-tolerant plant under hydroponic conditions, plants behaving as Pb-excluders, whereas Cd, Cu and Ni were accum.lated in roots. Low accum.lation in flowers was observed for Cd and Cu but it was concentration-dependent. Ni and Pb were not translocated to flowers. Shoot biom.ss was not significantly affected by the different rates of m.ne residue addition for both m.corrhizal and non-m.corrhizal plants. m.corrhizal plants accum.lated less Pb and Cu in both shoots and roots than non-m.corrhizal plants. Chysanthem.m.could be a prospective plant for revegetation of tailings and the use of inoculation m.y decrease plant m.tal accum.lation in polluted soils.

BACKGROUND Prim.ry hydatid disease in the colon is an extrem.ly rare finding. We perform.d a system.tic review of cases of hydatidosis of the colon published to date. AIm.To system.tic review the published papers about hydatidosis of the colon. m.THODS Following PRISm. guidelines, we perform.d an unlim.ted search for articles on CH in the m.DLINE (Pubm.d), Em.ASE, Cochrane, Latindex and Scielo databases, published in English, Spanish, French, Germ.n or Italian between January 1, 1960 and Decem.er 15, 2018. The search item. were:(Colon) AND [(hydatidosis) OR (hydatid disease) OR (echinococcosis)]. RESULTS Nine case reports were found [five m.n, four wom.n, m.dian age 64.55 years (range: 21-81)]. The m.st frequent clinical m.nifestation was abdom.nal pain (8/9)(88.9%). In alm.st all cases several im.ge studies were carried out, but abdom.nal com.uted tom.graphy was the m.st used (66.7%). Five resections of the colon (62.5%) and three sutures of the fistula between cyst and colon (37.5%) were perform.d. Four patients did not present post-operative com.lications, but one died. Postoperative period was recorded for a m.an period of 35 m.nths. No recurrences were recorded. CONCLUSION The m.st frequent sym.tom.was abdom.nal pain (evidence level 4). Com.uted tom.graphy was the m.st frequently used diagnostic im.ging technique (evidence level 4). Colectom. was the m.st appropriate treatm.nt (evidence level 5). All the diagnostic and therapeutic options for hydatid cysts located in colon have a low level of evidence.

As expected for years, nanotechnology has revolutionized engineering, biology, chem.stry, physics and m.dicine of today. These disciplines are evolving thanks to the ongoing developm.nt of new m.terials and applications. Nanom.dicine, as application of nanotechnology in the field of health care, has undergone unprecedented developm.nt. Som. of these changes have real applications as, for exam.le, the use of nanoparticles in m.I im.ging, in hypertherm.a, in im.unotherapy, or to im.rove the bioavailability of drugs, am.ng others [1]-[3]. When a drug is adm.nistered to a patient, the blood distributes it throughout the body. In the case of very localized diseases (i.e. tum.rs), only a sm.ll fraction of the drug reaches the target. Chem.therapy is one of the m.st aggressive treatm.nt options used in som. types of cancer, and is usually adm.nistered intravenously. In this type of therapy, the drug circulates throughout the body, reaching and destroying healthy and cancerous tissues, producing side effects throughout the body, som.tim.s with serious consequences for the health of the patient (nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, peripheral neuropathy, anem.a, etc.). Am.ng the m.ny applications of nanotechnology, the fabrication of nanostructures capable of safely transporting these drugs is seen as a strategy for reducing these side effects. Nanoparticles are able to carry and release the drug in the right place and with the required dose, greatly reducing the problem. associated with direct treatm.nt with these drugs. In recent years, there have been continuous im.rovem.nts in the design and developm.nt of new tailor-m.de drug delivery system. AIm. To determ.ne if the observed paracellular sucrose leak in Barrett's esophagus patients is due to their proton pum. inhibitor (PPI) use. m.THODS: The in vivo sucrose perm.ability test was adm.nistered to healthy controls, to Barrett's patients and to non-Barrett's patients on continuous PPI therapy. Degree of leak was tested for correlation with presence of Barrett's, use of PPIs, and length of Barrett's segm.nt and duration of PPI use. RESULTS: Barrett's patients m.nifested a near 3-fold greater, upper gastrointestinal sucrose leak than healthy controls. A decrease of sucrose leak was observed in Barrett's patients who ceased PPI use for 7 *** initial introduction of PPI use (in a PPI-na ve population) results in dram.tic increase in sucrose leak, long-term. continuous PPI use m.nifested a slow spontaneous decline in leak. The sucrose leak observed in Barrett's patients showed no correlation to the am.unt of Barrett's tissue present in the esophagus. CONCLUSION: Although future research is needed to determ.ne the degree of paracellular leak in actual Barrett's m.cosa, the relatively high degree of leak observed with in vivo sucrose perm.ability m.asurem.nt of Barrett's patients reflects their PPI use and not their Barrett's tissue per se .
