We used an experimental model involving white Westar rats (young and old) who were subjected to precise doses of ultraviolet radiation (UV). The experiment aims to examine the influence of epidermis potential protection factors in photo senescence versus senescence. We have studied the in vivo effect of some natural polyphones extracted from black grapes seeds and zinc aspartate and in vitro effect of AED (deuterium depleted water). The substances were administered by intragastric gavages, at two days intervals for two weeks prior to UV irradiation and during the entire period of the experiment (28 days). In the end, we determined the degree of hydrophilicity of the skin, in vitro, by measuring the contact angle value, which was inversely proportional to the hydrophilicity of the tissue (the angle formed at the contact between a liquid and a solid surface). Using this method we found a large variability depending on the hydrophilicity of the epidermis (abdomen and back), the age of the animal and UV/non UV irradiation. The maintenance of the epidermis fragments in AED (for 6 hours) increased significantly the tissue wet ability degree both in the young rats subject to UV and in the senescent ones subject to UV (photo senescence).

Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology *** We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveSchistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Effective final irrigation regimen is an important step in order to achieve better disinfection and ensure residual antimicrobial effects after root canal preparation. The aim of this study was to compare the residual antimicrobial activity of 0.2% cetrimide, and 0.2% and 2% chlorhexidine in root canals infected with Enterococcus faecalis. Biofilms of E. faecalis were grown on uniradicular roots for 4 weeks. After root canal preparation, root canals were irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid （EDTA） to remove the smear layer. The roots were randomly divided into three experimental groups （n=26） according to the final irrigating solution： Group I, 5 mL 0.2% cetrimide; Group II, 5 mL 0.2% chlorhexidine; and Group III, 5 mL 2% chlorhexidine. Samples were collected for 50 days to denote the presence of bacterial growth. The proportion of ungrown specimens over 50 days was evaluated using the nonparametric Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Differences among groups were tested using the log-rank test and the level of statistical significance was set at P〈0.05. The highest survival value was found with 2% chlorhexidine, showing statistically significant differences from the other two groups. At 50 days, E. faecalisgrowth was detected in 69.23% specimens in Groups I and II, and in 34.61% specimens of Group III. There were no significant differences between 0.2% cetrimide and 0.2% chlorhexidine. Final irrigation with 2% chlorhexidine showed greater residual activity than 0.2% chlorhexidine and 0.2% cetrimide in root canals infected with E. faecalis.

BACKGROUND Innate immunity was found to be associated with both persistence of Helicobacter pylori(***)infection and increased risk of gastric *** To identify the risk factors associated with *** infection and to establish the role of TLR9 rs352140 in suppressing or promoting inflammation related to this infection in *** We performed a study of 155 children with digestive symptoms,who were divided into two groups according to the histopathological exam:Group 1–48 children with ***-induced chronic gastritis,and Group 2–control *** Rural area and poor living conditions were significantly associated with *** chronic gastritis(P=0.0042/P<0.0001).Both positive immunoglobulin A anti *** and the rapid urease test were significantly associated with *** infection(P<0.0001).Significantly higher values of leukocytes and neutrophils within the peripheral blood were found in children with *** chronic gastritis(P=0.111/P=0.284).We found a significant positive correlation between the variant TT genotype of TLR9 rs352140 polymorphism and both leucocytes and neutrophils(P=0.0225/P=0.0292).CONCLUSION Variant TT genotype carriers of the TLR9 rs352140 gene polymorphism might have a more severe degree of inflammation.

We analysed histologically two Acanthamoeba keratitis(AK) eyes with anterior and posterior segment inflammation and blindness. Two enucleated eyes of 2 patients(age 45 and 51y) with AK(PCR of epithelial abrasion positive) were analysed. Histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid-Schiff and G?m?rimethenamine silver staining. We could not observe Acanthamoeba trophozoites or cysts neither in the cornea nor in other ocular tissues. Meanwhile, we found uveitis, retinal vasculitis and scleritis in these eyes, due to the long-standing, recalcitrant AK. So in this stage of AK, systemic immune suppression may be necessary for a longer time period.

BACKGROUND:Since we have previously shown an increase of mast cells in the small bowel and in the mesenteric lymph nodes in the rats with prehepatic portal hypertension,it can be hypothesized that this essential inflammatory cell would be involved in the pathogeny of the splanchnic changes related to portal hypertension. METHODS:To verify this hypothesis,we first studied mast cell infiltration in the ileum and in the mesenteric lymph nodes in sham-operated male Wistar rats(n=12) and in short-term prehepatic portal hypertensive rats (n=12),and the serum levels of rat mast cell protease Ⅱ(RMCP-Ⅱ)by *** a second set of experiments ketotifen,a mast cell stabilizer drug,was administered to sham-operated(n=10)and portal hypertensive(n=12) rats 24 hours before the intervention and prostanoids (PGE2,PGI2,TXB2)and leukotrienes(LTC4,LTB4)were assayed by RIA,mast cell infiltration in the ileum and in the mesenteric lymph nodes and the serum levels of RMCP-Ⅱwere also studied,to show its effectiveness to prevent the mesenteric alterations produced by the inflammatory mediators released by the mast cell. RESULTS:Forty-eight hours after the intervention RMCP-Ⅱ (P<0.05),PGE2(P<0.001)and LTC4 serum levels decreased and mast cell number and RMCP-Ⅱlevels increased in mesenteric lymph nodes in portal hypertensive *** administration of ketotifen reduced portal pressure(P<0.001),serum levels of PGE2(P<0.001)and RMCP-Ⅱ(P<0.001)in mesenteric lymph nodes. CONCLUSIONS:In acute portal hypertension in the rat,the mast cell translocation from intestinal mucosa to mesenteric lymph nodes,where they are activated and degranulates,would represent a defence mechanism to avoid the activation of an acute and massive inflammatory response in this *** administration of ketotifen is able to reduce the splanchnic inflammatory changes related to acute portal hypertension in the rat.
